categories for written works

although it is entertaining to me to post my poetry in a category like abstract art without color, I think It might be more helpful to have some categories more traditional for writing like unstructured poetry, spiritual, lyric, non-fiction, romance or whatever.

Hey Stratadrake, when you see this, could you explain to us why the writing category was made inaccessible? I've been curious on the reasoning why.

Does attempting to submit written items to it result in an error message?

^It's more that it isn't even an option on the list of categories to submit to.

There's nothing there to submit to. I can submit writing, but categories listed as writing categories on the master list found via the Browse Categories button at the top of the page don't show up at all on the submission menu when you actually go to post something.

Okay, time for a long story:

We don't have any way currently of flagging categories as exclusive to specific methods of submission (i.e. picture versus story).

Also, the submission process for stories used to bypass the locked/unlocked status of a submission category. This had the fringe benefit of effectively making the category story-only, but it always was just a bug, and I can't attest to whether this still occurs in the current framework or if it got fixed.

Thirdly, all categories have a status code (e.g. requires approval, locked) and one of the settings is "hidden", where the category will not be listed for submission but otherwise exists (and is browsable).

Ultimately, the writing submission system needs a major overhaul, and the category system needs a less-major upgrade to be better suited at its task.
