Category Sort Function Broken?

I was toying around earlier and wondering why the category sort options at the top of the listings weren' tworking.

Turns out it's a browser issue <_<

So I open up the same page in IE5 and start toying around with the same options. After awhile, I notice something. (See attachment)

Why is the URL so long?

...Because the Javascript used for the category sort function simply appends the chosen option onto the URL, even if the sort parameter already exists. This doesn't cause any problems with the category listings (apparently the last of multiple parameters overrides the earlier ones), but the URL starts getting much longer than it needs to be. I also notice that the listboxes aren't initialized to the current sort method or list size, both of them come up blank.

That's when I realize, the way the sort interface is coded, it loads the page after any change made to either setting. Again, more of an inconvenience than a real problem, but if I want to switch the category listing to (say) its ten most recent, I have to select the options one at a time. "Date (newest first)" and the page reloads, then "10" and the page reloads again.

So this brings me to a question: What about redesigning the category sort interface to work kinda like the "Search" interface? Instead of a Javascript redirect tied to the listboxes' onChange events, there could be a "Go" button next to them. Pick a sort method, pick a list size, hit "Go" to perform the sort.

I kinda figured it would be... but in the meantime, now that I know what the URL form for category sorts is, so I can type them myself if I want to sort them
