I've looked this up all over the internet and can't find any answers :/
I'd like to know the following:
How do you make and apply an oil wash?
What kinds of surfaces can it go on?
What effects are it good for :/ ? (pics??)
Thanks ;)

Oil wash, eh?
The closest thing I can think of is a glaze. It might be the same technique. I'll ask my professor on Monday.
When you do an oil painting, sometimes you want to tint a certain area with some added color but not so thickly that it changes the color completely.
Like, if you paint the sky and think it needs a little bit more purple in there.
You make the color you want (in a very small ammount) and mix it with thinners (usually safflower or linseed oil, turpenoid, and damar varnish are the most common ones used). it will be veeery thin and you take a rag, dip it in the wash, and carefly put it over your original color to tint it.
The painting and brushstrokes will remain in tact and it will have a bit more color. Like using color balance in photoshop.
As far as surfaces go, anything will work mostly. You can put on oil wash on top of acrylic, oil paint, just about anything. Watercolors, though, I wouldn't recommend. And also be sure your painting is pretty dry or else the wash will blend into your base paint and run. |

I thought I'd mention this in case anyone else was planning on using this. I tried vegetable oil- it being the only oil in my house. My painting hasn't dried for two weeks :/ and it doesn't work very well on canvas. Just for those who wanted to know ^.^ |
