I know hes not American, but for just Jazz in general Id say Paul Hardcastle. his three groups Paul Hardcastle band, the Jazzmasters, and Kiss the Sky are all basicly the same Paul plays 90% of all the instruments for everyone of his groups, and there all great.

I'd have to say Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Red McKenzie, Billie Holiday, Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Ida Cox... list goes on, Jazz rocks!
