You're not by chance using a BMP (MS Paint) type drawing, are you?
For starters, make sure to convert your drawing to JPEG or GIF format. On the "Save As" dialog box, open the "Save as Type" dropdown list and look for JPEG or GIF options.
Once you have the right file format, the actual size (dimensions) of your drawing should hardly be an issue.
