We are going old-school here, buddy. It is the near future of 1999. UFO sightings have gone from an anolmaly to an every day occurance. Contact has been made, and they are hostile. The world is on the verge of panick. In a desperate move, the UN opts to undergo Operation: X-COM. Backed with the best technology, funding, and man-power Earth has to offer, it is the first and last line of defense against the alien forces. This is X-COM: UFO Defense.

I love this game. An old-school, turn-based computer game that has you strategically setting up bases around the world to monitor UFO activity. Once your radars pick up enemy hostiles, you must send out your fighters to intercept and bring down the alien crafts. But it doesn't stop there. If the ship crash lands, you must send out a team of highly train personel to investigate the crash sight and bring back whatever knowledge (or even captives) they can.

This is where the action heats up, as each man on your team is an individual (whome you can custom name) with his or her own stats and characteristics. Is he strong? Give him the autocannon. A cool head and sharp eyes? I'm putting you on point. Those who survive multiple missions move up in rank, becoming superior officers. The higher the rank of an officer accompanying the mission, the better your team's moral will be.

This is the pinical of strategy games, because you must juggle proper facilities for your bases (such as living and training courters, hangers, ect), economics (UN fundings), field tactics (investigating crash sites, responding quickly to attacks on civilian targets, even defending your own bases), and technology (researching aliens and their technology gives you better weapons, armor, and vehicles). The diversity of the game is unmatched, and I feel it still holds up today against the best our modern games have to offer.

This was voted one of the best games of all time, people, so don't just take my word for it. X-COM: UFO Defense, the best Strategy game EVER.

The world map.

The graphics are outdated, but don't let that fool you. The gameplay is devine.

When I play games, graphics really aren't an issue - I go for storyline and gameplay. That game sounds really interesting, although I've never heard of it before (it seems like all the best games aren't well known Sad ).

Made in '93, I believe. One of the first computer games I ever owned. Rated a 9/10 as one of the best games of all time. Horribly addicting, and more indepth (gameplay and story-wise) than many modern games of today.

That might be another reason as to why I've never heard of it; I would have been four years old then. But my brother collects old games. He might have a copy (I'll have to go bug him now, thanks to you. Razz) I love strategy games, even though I'm not particularly good at them (action/adventure and RPGs are my forte).

As does pretty much EVERYONE in this forum. X-COM is a true test of your tactical might, and only the bravest and most skillful dare go near! ^_^ Razz

I've heard of it. I was never really interested in strategy games then.

Final Fantasy Tactics started that.
Then Age of Empires and Starcraft.

I'm a strategy nut now, though I tend to play to defensively.....and try to build everything too soon....

Meh, I have Star Craft. It's okay, but I get bored of it pretty quick. . . . .
I've never heard of that one, but yea, I would have been 4 or 5 that year so meh, I doubt I would have.

I love all video games, honestly. I don't care what kind it is, as long as it keeps me interested, it's a good game in my book. ^_^

If you are a strategy nut now, then you should definatley look into X-COM. Though combate puts you more on the offensive, you do have defensive elements such as building up your bases, defending said bases from attack (either with base defenses or troops, though it is risky to allow an alien attack unit to enter your base).

Also, another interesting element of combat is that you must go to a combat site completely prepared to deal with whatever the enemy throws at you, because you will not have a chance to send in more troops ect, if things start looking badly. This means stock up on ammo, bring at least one medical officer, a high ranking officer for moral, stuff like that. You have to be prepared tp deal with anything and everything.
