For whoever has seen the Village what did you think of it? Was it good or total crap?

Both. It appears to be a horror movie from what the previews show, but it's nothing of the sort. Sure there's an occasional thrill rush once in a while, but nothing greatly creepy/scary. As for the story, well nothing beats a good Shamaylan script. It's well thought out, clever, funny and intelegent. It even has kind of a "PotC, Jack Sparrow style" dialogue to it.
The actors are perfect for their roles, no mistake about it. But is it all that and a bag of popcorn? I liked it, but I'm a big Shamaylan fan. Not sure too many other people would like it. It's kind of slow-paced, odd and it requires you to use your brain. Not many people like that. Overall it's OK by the time you finish watching (considering the suprise ending) you'd forget some of the witty dialogue and clever responses. It's not quite as good as Signs, which by the way was a great movie, but to me The Village was a good movie. If I would give the most clear way of describing what you'd expect going into the movie, I'd say that it's like Signs but with a different storyline. It "feels" like Signs anyway.
Hope this helps. If you're a Shamaylan fan, go watch it, it's great. If you like clever, intelegent movies, go watch it, it's great. If you don't fit into one of the categories above, wait for the rental.

I have already seen the movie actually I just want to know what other people think of it. I thought it was good too its just not what I thought it was. It does require a little brain power but its still good. I noticed though that a lot of movies that required a lot of brain power / had to think about it usually bombed. I dont know if anyones seen Vanilla Sky but it bombed and i thought it was actually quite good you just really needed to think about it.

Well, it depends on the person and how the movie is executed. If scenes are missing, major points are unclear and it seems all jumbled up, it'll usually bomb even though it's plot it was trying to convey was a good one. Ever hear about Jim Carey's move Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? It wasn't one of those easy popcorn movies but most to all critics gave it a good review.

I thought The Village wasn't what I'd have expected too. Not many people expected this either. I suppose it's like Signs, not really scary, not really a thriller, just a good, clever, well thought out movie. Kudos to Shamaylan!

Personally I loved it. ^_^

It had witty, humorous dialoge, and the actors were incredible. M.Night's attention to detail shines through in this movie. It wasn't horror, like I was expecting, but it was still simply amazing. The story really blew me away. A mind-blower, for sure.

It's not a laid back popcorn movie, but if you want some real good food for thought, a superior storyline, and a lot of suspence, then go see it. It may take a little while for the pace to pick up, but its worth the wait To me, at least.

I guess thats true. Not everyone wants to go to a movie to think. They just want to relax/have a good time.

I've always wanted to go see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but i never got around to it. ill see it eventually. i dont know why but i've always liked the thinking movies. i think im just weird and thats what all my friends and family said too. im so loved.

i liked The Village...it was a good movie ^-^

i love the creatures' design, they looked freaking AWESOME!

it had a couple of those suspense moments, and i think it was a pretty good movie overall.

the credits made me laugh though. they listed characters as:

'Those we do not speak of

Flustered Man

Man With Raised Eyebrows'

etc.

made me laugh Laughing

I didn't like it at all. I was expecting to be scared. But then again, I saw the movie, but didn't read the book. (I'm assuming it was a book first.)

At first, I thought you wouldn't get to see the monsters at all, but you did get to. Well...it wasn't scary, but it didn't suck totally. There was one scene that really disturbed me, though. *shudders*

I liked the characters, they were perfect, and the actors did a wonderful job.

If you like surprise endings, then this is a good movie to see. ^_^

spoilers ahead:

thank you october breeze. for a sec there i thought i was the only one who didn't like it. in fact, i hated it. the idea that people would leave civilization to make their own town is retarded. they obviously didn't think it through because eventually inbreeding would have to occur to continue the city. the monstors looked like big red porque pines. the whole movie was practically mocking the blind. first they made it seem like they wanted to make the main character seem strong, but then near the end they have her run into a wall (not to mention some other stupid things she did). i hate it when previews make it look like a movie will be scary but you end up laughing more than anything. it was terrible. if you absolutely must see it, wait for the rental.

"Retarded" isn't exactly what Night was going for here... If you pay attention, you'll see that they isolated themselves from everyone/thing else to escape how fucked up the real world is.

It didn't really make fun of the blind either. I mean, she's f**king blind. You try walking with your eyes closed for one whole day. I'll garantee you'll smack your head into a wall sooner or later. Also take into consideration that she's scared shitless of the creatures (much like almost everyone else in the villiage), if you're running around scared, not thinking and you're blind - chances are you're going to trip over some things and bump into walls and stuff. It's what them hollerwood peoples call "character development." She's learned to use her senses to walk and run and go throughout her everyday life, but when she becomes scared her courage declines and she becomes a clutz. An example of this is when she's in the forest, hears the creature and becomes scared, then she starts to run aimlessly; running into sticks, bushes and other s**t like that. Tada.

Night isn't really one of those horror movie creators where he makes it INCREDIBLY horrifying and scary. He's a clever writer/director. Unlike movies such as Scream, Night's movies are more of the type you have to think about, one of those movies that are clever and original in every way. Consider horror as one of the many "features" of the movie.

As for the creature development, what's not to like? Sure they're big, red, and porcupinish; but hey! Atleast it's original. What were you expecting? A demented clown with a lobster claw? Props to Night for creating such an original monster.

But as I said, this movie isn't for everyone. The movie is a thriller, not a horror movie. It's ment to tickle the mind, make you think about it. It's a thriller, not a horror movie? Since when? Well, look at Signs, another movie Night directed and wrote. Same deal there, it's a clever thriller which just so happens to involve aliens. The Village is a clever thriller which just so happens to involve monsters. 'Nuff said.

i get why they isolated themselves but there were so many things wrong with it. and scarying people shitless isn't exactly a good way to keep em safe from the rest o the world.

i get what your sayin about her bein scared but why would she be scared? she had already killed the monster.

n i realise now that it wasn't supposed to be horror but the previews made it look like it.

but to each his own. so w/e floats your boat.

Another spoiler:
well first of all the monsters weren't even real. They were just costumes that the elders, or whoever they were, made. Were you not paying attention?

Next shes blind, what do you expect. Its typical you're gonna run into things.
i get what your sayin about her bein scared but why would she be scared? she had already killed the monster.

n i realise now that it wasn't supposed to be horror but the previews made it look like it.
The people were made to believe there was more than one monster so if she ran into one its possible to run into another.

You should never really base a movie on previews anyways its hardly ever what you expect to be.

And for the rest I think Nate did a wonderful job of covering it. Excellent job Nate.

it......was pretty lame

I love M. Night Shamalayn (sp...sorry) but he seems to have a general patter. hit, miss, hit, miss.
Both my brother and I guessed the big secret of the story within the first 5 min, my brother's girlfriend fell asleep, and it was just.....dry.

She was partially blind, not totally blind, wasn't she? I think she'd see a huge wall...

It just....seemed... really dead to me.

But, according to the pattern, Night's next film should be awesome n.n

(note: Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind was awesome n.n )

u got that right! A friend and i went to go see it one day thinking it was going to be scary because we love horror movies, and when it was over we wished we hadnt wasted our money on it. it was soo stupid i mean the creatures werent even real in the movie they were just trying to keep the people away, i mean come on how stupid and pathetic is that?
