Oasis was blah. I listen to old timers music if I have a headache or need to calm down.. like Johnny Cash or Hank Williams... other than that I listen to common crap... such as eminem _________________ |

Nothing 'calms me down... I'f I'm p*ss*d I listen to angry music, etc.
If by calm you mean a relaxed state or something, well, Tears For Fears is great for that. And the smashing Pumpkins. I don't like to be too calm, though...I daydream and think a lot when I listen to this stuff. Hmmmm...And David Bowie's(sp?) Heathen album...those are the major ones lately. Artsy moody rock. And New Wave. Sometimes Kansas, but I lost my 'Freeks of Nature' CD. ;_; I'm only 20, but I have little respect for most of the newest bands on the radio. So don't be suprised if I start listing older stuff. I like hippy music. Nead to get some of the folkier bands of the 60s. I like Niel Young.
Hmmmm... This one song by Boston realy does it for me, too... 'take a ride' or gonna' take a ride' or something...? I don't have the CD, unfortunately, so I can't remember the name.
*sigh* Why isn't there any NEW bands who can do mellow, intelectual music...and do it good? I sware if I hear one more 'teeny boppers w/ guitars' rock band whining about people not listening to them and their girlfriends leaving them...Ugh! And then there's the fake punks. >_< Ye gods I hate modern rock music! Emo my @$$. (ends rant, and goes to find her happy place with aformentioned bands)

hehe, it's ok raymei! and sorry people think you're a guy, too. love your avatar, tho!
err well yea, eccentricsage, i know a lot of times calm music does nothing and you just need some angry rock or metal, but yes music that puts you into a relaxed state is what i meant. mhmm david bowie and smashing pumpkins can be pretty relaxing. and i daydream a lot when i listen to more mellow stuff too. (or anything really- i just daydream too much i think)
indeed teeny bopper bands and "fake punks" do suck, and most old music is much better than today's. however, modern music hasn't completely disintegrated into the pop/rap/fakepunk state. there are several good bands to be found if you look under the covers of mainstream tv and radio. (i hate the radio too- except for 1 college station i love to listen too). there are many underground bands that haven't been corrupted by popularity, and even a couple that are more popular and still do their best to make good music. hmmm i have found that often a band's older albums are better than their newer ones, tho.
eh it's all a matter of opinion, anyway, so i'll just shut up and listen to my obscure music... _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

When I'm angry, and I want to try to calm down a little, I listen to slow songs, and maybe some country songs. Some songs I like to listen to help me calm down are
-"Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls
-"Butterfly Kisses" by (can't remember who)
-"God Must've Spent A Little More Time" by N*Sync
-"Drive Myself Crazy" by N*Sync
-"Something To Believe In" by Poison
-"I'll Be There For You" by Bon Jovi
-"Love Bites" by Def Leppard
-"Just To See You Smile" by Tim McGraw
-"I Knew I Loved You Before I Met You" by Savage Garden
-"Truly, Madly, Deeply" by Savage Garden
-"I'm Gonna Smile" by Lonestar
-"Lover I Don't Have To Love" by Bright Eyes
-"Come On" by Ben Jelen
-"Back At One" by Brian McKnight
-"You Were Mine" by the Dixie Chicks
And many, many more... they make me calm down because they're all slow. I have a lot of pissed off songs, too |

whoa i forgot the goo goo dolls! yea their stuff is very calming. i love iris, slide, name, and black balloon. and urk i can't remember who sang it either, but i used to love that song "butterfly kisses." and wow "truly, madly, deeply" -that's taking me back (this thread always makes me so nostalgic). um i was never really a big fan of savage garden, but that song reminds me of a movie with the same name starring alan rickman. very sad movie, but i liked it a lot _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

Heh, I love my sad/angry songs and sad/scarry movies. I'm never much of an action or comedy person, though that's always good. I like to be upset or scared when it comes to movies. And for music, I have a few "Happy, dance' songs, but I have more sad and angry ones. One of my favorites right now is "She's Anti" by Homegrown, because it reminds me of me and how I am in class and stuff.
Sitting in her class
Sophisticated, anti-social brat
She never speaks a word
That's why she's sitting in the back
No one knows her name
I never knew that she existed
Then one tragic day She came to school and went ballistic
With an ak in her right hand
She shot the cheerleading squad and ran
They're all dead, They're all dead
She's alone in her class
There's no one left for her to blast
She's always kicking @$$
Masochistic, Gothic, dressed in black
No knows her name
I never knew she was sadistic
On April 28th She came to school and went ballistic
With a rifle in her left hand
She blew away the football team and ran
They're all dead, They're all dead
[Chorus 2:]
She's a bitch, she hates everyone
She's one of those Anti-girls
Pessimistic and cynical
She's a victim of this lonely world, yeah
I know she hates me
She's a little insane
And she's crazy
She's kookie, ookie, dookie
They're all dead, They're all dead,
[Chorus 2:]
She's a bitch, she hates everyone
She's one of those Anti-girls
Pessimistic and cynical
She's a victim of this lonely world, yeah

Haha, I don't plan to. I'm not a violent person... usually. It's just, the whole "No one knows her" describes me. Yeah... They did a cover on the "Barbie Girl" song that's really funny, too. I got into them all over again when Jake sent me the song "Second Best" |

yea i think i have the barbie girl cover. (lol i love that song! mxpx covers it too). mhmm second best is a great song, but i like their older stuff better, from that's business, like "my friends suck" and "face in the crowd." "kiss me diss me" and "disaster" are awesome tho _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

Could you give me the names of some of these underground bands? ^-^
Ooooh! I forgot to mention Badfinger! What the hell's wrong with me? 0_0 Yes, most people aren't aware of who they are, wich is a shame. They were a rock band in the 70s who were discovered by the Beatles and signed to Apple Records. They did a lot of wonderful love songs, and so much more. I highly recomend checking them out. Some of their bigest hits are Baby Blue, No Matter What, and Without you (wich they finaly won an award for when Mariha Carry did her hit cover of it. The original's better. )
My faves by them are typicly the ones that weren't their bigest hits, though.
Sadly, the two lead singer/songwriters commited suicide. ;_; That's why songs like 'Without You" make me cry sometimes. The band members themselves were realy something special. True romantics. 'Specialy Pete and Tom, the two that died.
At first they sound a little like the Beatles, but they definetly had their own style. Pete had one of the most beautiful voices ever.
As to the topic of modern music...Yeah...Notice how Matalica, Maralyn Manson, and Korn have gone down recently? *sigh* I can't even bring myself to listen to Matalica's older fantastic stuff 'cuz I'm so disgusted with those sell outs! Heh, my sis saw them at Sanatarium and said they sucked. She said that Linkon Part sounded great, but bolth of us hate their whiny @$$ lyrics. They could be such a good band if they'd just replace Chester. >_< There's only a few mainstreem artists from the new mallenium I like. And half of them I still don't like enough to go buy a CD. I am blown away by Outcast, though. They can't even be catagorised as 'Rap' anymore because they're all over the place with their music! They'll definetly be Rock n' Roll hall of famers someday if they ceap this up. :)
Hmmm...I also miss the Alt rock of the mid 90's, Alternative is nothing but a synonym for 'misc. pop' nowadays. And where have all the Lileth Fair chicks gone? And what the hell is Jewel THINKING?! 0_0 *goes off and cries* |

aww that's so sad about that band badfinger that you mentioned. why did the singers commit suicide?
i'm sad about metallica and korn, too. and linkin park is just annoying. and yea alt rock of the 90s was awesome. some of the more mainstream bands that i was thinking of, that are still decent, were the foo fighters, incubus, and blink-182. i think that foo fighters' and incubus' older stuff was much better tho.
ok some underground, modern bands... um there's senses fail, the reunion show, park, the hippos, death cab for cutie, the goops, harvey danger, the exploding hearts, the bodies, and reel big fish.
these are all different, music style-wise (since i'm not sure what you're into), and um they may or may not be familiar to you (i really have no sense of what's popular nowadays. i just listen to what i like). soo yea... _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

Pete Ham killed himself because he was just a realy realy sensitive guy who's heart was often broken, the final straw being when their manager betrayed them. Then Tom Evans couldn't go on without him, so after a strugle that sounded much like manic depression, he killed himself in the same fashion Pete had. His suicide note said that he just wanted to be with Pete. 'Without You' is a duet that they wrote and sang together. The first part goes:
"Oh I can't forget this evening
or your face when you were leaving
but I guess that's just the way the story goes.
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows,
yes it shows.
I can't live, if living is without you...I can't live, I can't give anymore!"
They wrote some of the most romantic, trajic, and sincere music I've ever heard. Even when they sang about sex it didn't sound vulgar. From everything I've read, they were fairly naive and inocent. And Pete was an especialy empathic person. I just can't help but to think that they were special. I remember when I was too young to understand half of what they said, songs like 'Lonely You, Lonely Me' and 'Apple of My Eye' made me cry my eyes out. The whole band was special in that you didn't have to understand what they were saying to feal what they were fealing. 'Sweet Tuesday Morning' makes uterly no sence at all and yet it has a profound afect. The Beatles never gave me that fealing. Badfinger's very under apreciated. I love the smashing Pumpkins but they can't do that. Pearl Jam comes close, but still the emotion relies heavily apon the lyrics. Kurt Cobain did it, though. But still only sometimes.
Badfinger could also take lyrics that are so simple and self explanatory that most bands would sound laughable singing them, yet find a way to make the listener feal the words the way they did. Their music was subtle and elegant in such a way that simple minded people looked them over, dismissing them as 'the Baby Beatles'. I guess that's another part of the tragedy.
Blink 182...what's their newer stuff? I want to make shure I don't get them confused with another band...
Harvey Danger, I remember. That one song was hilarious! " all around the world I find that only stupid people are breeding, their creadance cloning and feeding, and I don't even own a TV." That's great. And the sad part is Plainfield High School certainly proovs that observation correct. v_v
Metalica and Korn... I don't feal that Korn has sold out, though, at least. They kicked @$$ at Ozzfest. Maybe they've just lost their sence of direction? They have more to be happy about now, so how can they continue on with their angst ridden rock? And yet if they change too much, their fans may shun them as the Smashing Pumpkins fans did during Adore. They're in a tough position.
Metalica on the other hand are prettending to be these dark, dangerous bad-asses when they realy aren't. music used to be more hypothetical and intelectual, with some sheer rage added into the mix. Now they're just a bunch of jack asses who are too busy beating their chests to play their instruments right. And they don't care, because they know their name can carry them for a while. All the preps think going to a Matalica concert makes them soooooo bad @$$ when they don't even know the words to any of their songs. And Matalica has chosen these posers over loyal fans. It makes me sick! >_< Heh...and my sis saw them, and said they totaly blew. A far cry from the perfection they once had.
And Marilyn Manson...his shock rock used to have intelectual messages in it. Now he's too distracted by his porno girlfriends to put much thought into anything anymore. He was at Ozzfest, too, and performed horribly. The whole thing centered around a couple of sluts in fake boobs and fake buts. He was too busy messing around with them and posturing to bother with singing half the time. And the fake boobs/buts...that was just childish. And using sex to shock people? Oooh, how original. *rolls eyes*
I'll stop ranting now, if you'd like. ;)
As for my taste...if it's realy good, I'll usualy like it. I tend to prefer intelectual music, and varying forms of rock. I like some of what Pop USED to be. I even like some country, just not the new crap. Though the Dixxie chicks seem pretty good. I think that horid 'Ed' song just gave them a bad name for a while.

lol i like your theories on manson and metallica- i agree with the metallica one, but i don't know enough about manson to really agree or disagree. mostly i've just listened to his covers (heh i loooove covers). and i see what you mean about korn- i like their older stuff better, but they haven't completely sold out or drastically changed their music or anything (ahem i can think of a few other bands that have. it makes me mad)
wow that is such a sad story. it's too bad badfinger doesnt get the recognition it seems they should. i think i'll check them out now, and ask if any of my friends have heard of them. thanks for the info, tho
yea i love that harvey danger song! "flagpole sitta," it's called. i have that album but i'm having such a hard time finding their new album. argh. ha what a coinicidence they're playing now- one of my favourites, "private helicopter"
umm let's see, some of blink's newer stuff would be "feeling this" and "i miss you" (i think that's a single anyway). i love both their old and new music, but the big deal is that they've changed their style a bit and have become more mature both lyrically and musically.
haha i'm sure you have great taste in music! (i think i do, too). i'm not a big country person, but i love basically all forms of the rock and "punk"-type genres. hmm you might not like all of the bands i mentioned, then. some were ska and emo. o well _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

Carmina Burana is good to listen to. But most other operas I've heard are... blah. The biggest problem is when the chorus sings, the soloists sing, but the orchestra is on a completely different beat. It sounds horrible when that happens. And with most operas (that I've heard) it happens a lot.
Another fun song to zone out to is Alvin and the Chipmunks singing I'm too Sexy. I swear, I'm scarred for life (in a good way).
What else?
Oh! The Doors! Especially Spanish Caravan or The Crystal Ship.
Really, anything to the effect of melodic, slow, meaningful tunes is great.
I've also been listening to a lot of David Byrne's music. Mainly with The Talking Heads, but also some from his solo career. Odd stuff. Love the album title, "More Songs about Buildings and Food."
I've gone off on a tangent again, maybe. So then there were these llamas!
No.
Speaking of Llamas, I use winamp to play the music on the computer. But it's a bit flaky recently...
tangents again. I stop writing just about now. |
