I'm writing a Harry Potter fanfic about an original character, and I had a few concerns that I hope someone can help me with. Firstly, in my fanfic, would it be alright if I took a character like Colin Creevy, who said he was muggle-born, and made it so he wasn't actually muggle-born but half-blood, and that he was lying about his being muggle-born? I hope you can understand what I'm saying. Another question I had is about the Hogwarts Express. Are the doors to compartments on the inside of the train, or on the outside, and do the students carry their trunks and such onto the train, or do their trunks not get put in the compartments with them? And last, in a fanfiction, is it okay if your original character doesn't interact with Harry and Ron and Hermione? (Meaning like talking with them, being friends with them, etc.) I'd be very, very grateful if someone could help me with my questions. Thanks! |
1. this belongs in the fanfiction critiques forum.
I don't think it does, actually. Fanfic critique is only for critiquing finished or parially written out fics, not those still in the thought process. Unless we discuss changing the rules.
Now for the questions...
1. Yes! It's perfectly fine to have a character who was in the same situation as Colin Creevy, just make sure whoever she/he is, is different from Colin in personality, that way your readers won't get mixed up or lable the original character as a Mary-Sue or Gary-Stu.
2. If I remember correctly, the compartment doors are on the inside of the Hogwarts Express, and students can enter them via a hallway that goes through the whole train. I also believe that the students do indeed carry their luggage onto the train, it is only when they reach Hogwarts is it taken from them.
3. Of course its fine to leave the main Harry Potter characters out of the fanfiction. It's your fanfic, anyway, you can do whatever you want to.
Well, I hope that answered your questions. ^_^

I probubly sound like an idiot asking this-but what's a Mary-sue? I've heard it being used in a lot of places, but I've never understood what it is. I'm such a confused idiot... |

You're not a confused idiot. ^_^
A Mary-sue (or Gary-Stu for boys) is an original character that is either A. Exactly like another character in every way, shape and form, or B. is extremely perfect, has no faults, and is all good. Basically an under-developed character with no personality of their own. |

It depends on the character, I do believe. If you meant to have your character seem perfect...or if it was a deity of some sort, then yes, a character can have absolutely no faults. Or if you're poking fun at Mary-Sues. Depends on the sitiuation. ^_^ |

I love it when people poke fun at Mary Sues...
I think it's a great idea to not have them involoved with Harry and his gang. It's, from what I read, pretty original. Almost everyone has them become enemies or friends with them, it'd be great to see the wizarding world and Harry's adventures/Harry gossip(if he's still there) through another student's point of view.
Also, like others have said, you don't want your OC to be exactly like Colin, but they can be similar. I do hope to read your fic when you post it... _________________ If I was anymore hardcore, I'd be arrested. |

Mary-Sues are crap.
angst is better.
what's a few characters commiting suicide/getting raped/kiling eachother for the sake of a fic? |
