Linkin Park.....

I hate them, personally. My reason? Basic. They can't play guitar, drums, or bass. Their lyrics are the exact same thing over and over again, but with different wording. I mean, take this:

Every step that I take is another mistake to you

and

I don't know how I got this way/ I'll never be alright/ so I'm breaking the habit tonight

It's pathetic. They don't use solos, and the worst part of all:

The rapping.

Jesus Christ. It's unecessary. It's not needed. There's no point. The dude's name is Chester. Bennington. Rapper or rocker?

NEITHER.

LP is nothing but punk pop posers who learned power chords(5 tops) and decided to add a DJ and electronic drums. They are a techno pop version of Avril Lavigne.

But they are classified under rap/metal.

No, Rage Against the Machine is the ONLY band that deserves to be rap/metal because they didn't always rap. It wasn't really rapping, anyway. It was yelling, screaming, extremely fast lyrics. They didn't do a bad thing to Springsteen's "The Ghost of Tom Joad" or Dylan's "Maggie's Farm". They didn't do a bad thing to either. They covered them well.

LP is pop punk. Bad pop punk. The over depressing lyrics and the terrible guitar rules out metal by a long shot. The fact they never use guitar solos rules them out of metal as well. Never is different than sometimes, may I add.

Record scratching doesn't count.

I hate them. They're not metal, and they never will be. Their lyrics can be found in every Avril song and they have the guitar skills of 10 year old, with the bass of a 5 year old.

And get rid of the fuckin' DJ.

I've been waiting for this rant from you, considering how many newbies need converting.

Lol. Hmm... well, I'm not going to deny anything that you've said (it's especially true for their last album, Meteora. The two lyric examples you took were from that CD.). Their music can be repetitive, and the fact that they lack solos causes most of their songs to be under 3 minutes. I've been told by friends of mine who play instruments that their music is simple (I can't tell, being musically retarded). And, I suppose, if you hate rapping, the rap can get annoying. You're probably also going to lose all respect for me when I say this but...

I like their music. Mostly the older stuff, though; Hybrid Theory and especially the EP. The rapping was a lot more complicated back then (though I suppose that doesn't matter much if you don't like rapping in the first place), and Chester's voice was more raw (more so in the EP). The lyrics, if still simple (I'm not so good at judging lyrics either...) were at least better than what they are now. I have no comment about the actual chords and such, because, like I said, I don't know anything about that kind of thing.

To each their own.

Papercut, a power chord is easy as 123. It's seriously too easy. I'll post examples.

First, we have Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

That last one didn't sound simple, if it's just chords. O.o

You have any from Linkin Park, for me to compare to those two?

That was the comparison. Kurt wrote in simple chords, whereas Jimmy Page...did not. LP is comparable to the former.

Anyone who's had a guitar for a week can play most Nirvana tunes. Doesn't make them bad, since Kurt had a point to writing them (with the decade of hair metal guitar gods that had just finished) other than just being lazy and untalented.

That was me. And Moby Dick is not chords. It's basically a full solo for all the Zepplin instruments.

But LP?

No, I saw LP's music, and I hated it enough to NOT practice it.

Here's some RHCP instead. Much more difficult than LP.

And by the easiness of this piece, that means something.

That's nice that you have your opinion, but I too like LP's music. They may be repetitive, but there are alot of poeple that can relate to them, and that they don't sit there and swear and talk about their sexual activities. None of their songs are edited (who wants to listen to beeps every five words?)
Simple chords has nothing to do with how the music makes you feel, now does it? I play guitar and I can say I like their use of chords and rhythms.
You also didn't use very good comparisons ( no offense, I'm not being mean). I mean, look:
Every step that I take is another mistake to you

and

I don't know how I got this way/ I'll never be alright / so I'm breaking the habit tonight
The first one means that he is being judged by someone and can't take much more of it. The second is him saying that he had a terrible habit of fighting or something worse and he going to break the habbit. See? I you look, you can see that the words do NOT compare even the slightest. THey also have a few songs that don't use rap ( though not that many.)

And chester didn't name himself, so it's not his fault that his name is Chester Bennington, now is it? And he doesn't write most of the lyrics, Mike Shinoda does. And Chester is not the rapper, Mike Shinoda does all of it ( and sometimes Mr. Haun).

LP and Avril Lavigne sound nothing alike, and where ever you got the fact that they are techno/pop is a mystery to me. Their lyrics are different and their music has a completely different feel to it. Remember, it's not how simple the shords are, it's how the music played makes you feel, good or bad.

You did present a really good argument though. You should join a debate team Razz LoL

Sad OmG! I can't believe this is actually happening, so i posted as fast as I could Sad

I will NEVER say they suck, because I've loved them for like 6 years now, and if you wanna hear their REAL rock, then listen to their song My reason or Part of me- YES THERE YOU GO! and plus, you don't even know who's who and you proved that by saying CHESTER was MIKE, and they should NOT loose the DJ, because he's what helped make part of that band, and they aren't who they are without EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM, just because they sound simple, or like someone else, means Sh*t, just like godsmack- THEY SOUND LIKE METALLICA! but that doesn't mean that i have to choose one or the other- and i didn't- i like both

they put about a good 8 years of their souls into that music,n it's not about how well YOU can play their music. So i'm really sorry, and you probably hate me (but in that case i guess i don't CARE) but i'm gonna pretect my boys. And it's not numb and breaking the habbit that sound alike, it's numb and figure.09 with the same points to them, so maybe you should listen to them a little closer.

and (i think it was parercut dragon that said this) it's true, they should have worked on meteora alittle harder, but it was still good, cuz i definately relate to all of their songs and there's not a single song of theirs that i don't like.

AND YES! I HAVE ALL OF THEIR CD'S AND GUITAR TAB BOOKS AND IT'S ALL JUST FINE!
That's nice that you have your opinion, but I too like LP's music.
There's a difference between liking a band and that band being good. Fuck, you can do just about anything and there'll be people who can relate to it, that's not the issue. The issue is that LP is not a good band when it comes to skill. You can relate to them, good for you, go listen to them, we don't care. Neither of us is trying to say you can't be a fan, but even fans should be able to recognize when a band they like is not amazingly talented.
Simple chords has nothing to do with how the music makes you feel, now does it? I play guitar and I can say I like their use of chords and rhythms.
You like them, but are they good? Kurt Cobain was a shit guitar player. But millions of people worship him and relate to everything he did. But that doesn't change the fact that what he wrote was not technically great (though comparing his writing to LP's is nearly insulting). Yes, half of a band being good is the way they make a person feel, but a big part of whether a band is talented or not is in the skill. Otherwise there's no basis because everyone relates to something different.
And chester didn't name himself, so it's not his fault that his name is Chester Bennington, now is it?
Sure it is. William Bruce Bailey, Michael McKagan, Bret Michael Sychak, Bruce Johannson, Robert Kupendall... Names can be changed. N' no, it's not all about names and a name doesn't make a band bad, it's just another minor bad note to what's wrong with LP.
LP and Avril Lavigne sound nothing alike, and where ever you got the fact that they are techno/pop is a mystery to me. Their lyrics are different and their music has a completely different feel to it. Remember, it's not how simple the shords are, it's how the music played makes you feel, good or bad.
No it's not. That's what makes a band good to you, it does not make them a good band. Just as an example if you even know this, but... I love Poison. Love their tunes, love the image, love the connection to the songs. But they're not amazing musicians. Mediocre. And I know that. The'yre not the best band in the world, and they may not even be a "good" band when it comes to talent. To me, they're a great band, but I can recognize that they aren't in the grand scheme of things. LP fans should be able to do the same. You have to differentiate between what's general fact (a band's skill) and your preferences (your connection to them).

As for the comparison between LP and Avril, take Avril's songs and add some more distorted guitars and rapping...you'd have something about the same quality as LP. It is how simple the chords are when it comes to talent and skill. Their lyrics are cliche, their musicianship is average, and they've brought nothing of importance to the world of music. No matter how much you like them or how deep your connection to them is, it doesn't change that.

It's not to say someone can't like them or that they're "wrong" for liking them, but just because you do still doesn't make them a talented band.

I don't hate people for what they like. Only if they like them for the wrong reasons (bandwagon fans) or are unrealistic sheep ("OMG LP IS THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD! EVERY1 ELSE SUXXORX! NO ONE IS BETTER THAN LP! THEY'RE THE MOST TALENTED EVR!!!!!111two"). Like whatever you want, but be realistic about it and don't hold a band to a higher place than they belong.

Hey, I never said it was wrong to like or dislike them, I was simply staing my opinion, which happens to be legal. I'm not trying to offend anyone and I happened to like their approach to music. I'm sorry if I offended anyone by what I said, I was just saying what came to my mind. That's all. So sorry for likeing my rights. But disliking them doesn't mean they suck, and I don't even closely relate to their music. I know people that do relate that don't like them. It makes no difference.

Look, Flea, there went the point!

We're not mad. At least I'm not. Fuck, I ain't wastin' good anger on LP. Did you read what I said or skim, 'cause I thought I explained it decent enough...
But disliking them doesn't mean they suck
And liking them doesn't mean they're good.

What you like is not what is good. Period. If you like it, great, have fun. If you don't, well too bad. Whether or not you personally like them has nothing to do with whether or not they're a good band musically.

THAT was the point. That LP is not a good band musically. S'all. Rolling eyes If someone likes them, la di fuckin' da. I like a lot of bands that are poor musicians, but they're good to me. However, I still recognize that what I like is not automatically what is good just because I like it. Me liking C.C. DeVille's slightly sloppy and hyperactive guitar style does not make him a virtuoso. Just because I like it doesn't mean it's good.

See?

EDIT: And might I point out that what Flea and I have said is only insulting to people who are unrealistic about LP. 'Cause if I saw someone saying "Dude, C.C. is a crap guitarist. The dude's always out of tune!" It's true. I can't get upset 'cause they're right. And what we've said about LP is right and shouldn't be insulting. And unless some of you are members of the band, it's not a personal insult against anyone either because we've said nothing negative about the fans.

Razz You don't have to dislike anything about them. I just get really...annoyed by people who refuse to admit any flaws their favorite band has. My favorite bands have been called "those faggy dudes" for so long I have no sympathy for people who freak out over the slightest bit of criticism against their own favorite. Rolling eyes

Alot of my favorite bands have never been heard of by alot of people I talk to. Linkin Park does have alot of flaws, but When people say things that make bands look like complete dipshits, I can't stand it. But I think linkin Park needs a little variation (but nothing that makes them sound like pathetic desperate losers)

Flea, you did have alot of really good points.

okay, but did you know that other people have proble love bands you've never heard of....... so what? that has nothing to do with how good Linkin Park is, because there are 1000's of artists out there that will NEVER fullfill there lifelong dream in the music buisness probly better than many of the artists that DID make it into the music buissness, like britney spears, unlezbian girls with good voices should replace britney spears who's out there kissin madonna (christina aguilera??? not important, that was expected of her!), but that is NEVER gonna happen, so now that i have calmed down after reading flea's mean topic, i guess i get what he's saying..................................................but I STILL LOVE LINKIN PARK THE SAME AS I HAVE FOR QUITE A WHILE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is for both sides. Not just "I hate Linkin Park". Smile It's just that "They're not very good musically" can't really be countered with "Well I like what they do" 'cause....well you like them, ok, so?

Whereas if someone had a counterpoint like "that's not true, they have solos in X number of songs, so blah blah blah" that would be the other side. That stuff about who wrote the lyrics, who raps, etc. applied. Whether we like 'em or not doesn't really matter. I don't like The Beatles or Metallica, but I can still recognize 'em as great bands.

Flea just pointed out what was bad about LP, which happen to be issues that cause him to not like the band. He (and I) could point out problems with any band. It just comes down to what you look for in music. Some people prefer bands with great guitar work, deep lyrics, party rock, heavy bass, lots of piano, whatever. Saying a band sucks just because you don't like them is just as stupid as saying a band is great because you do. The thread is more about LP's flaws than the fact Flea doesn't like them, which always seems to get overshadowed. In fact, were everyone to eliminate any statements of opinion ("I like them" "I think they're good" "They're the worst band ever!" etc. etc. etc.) you wouldn't even be able to tell. Just a bare, stripped down discussion of their abilities as a band and not any personal shit.

But I think that's hard for most people. Meh.
