I went to a convention in Sacramento yesterday and entered my original copy (a foolish idea, but everyone else was doing it) of this piece. When I went today to pick it up, it wasn't there. This forces me to the conclusion that someone took it. It really kinda sucks, but I'm ALMOST flattered that someone would think it good enough to take. I'm kinda curious as to why it WAS that one, there were much better pictures there in the contest.

Has anyone else here had art stolen? If you ask me, it pretty well sucks.

Maybe you just lost it? Or prehaps you left it there too long so that they throw away all submissions that aren't picked up over a certain amount of time. Too bad your pic got trashed :/ Hate when my g/f throws crap out without asking me <_<

I wish that was the case...but mine was one of just a few that were gone, most of the pieces were still hanging on the wall, and people were picking some up as I was searching.

hmm don't think i've had my pics stolen in real life but I have had them stolen online. At gaia I was especially pissed off by some1 stealing a special gift I made for one of my friends on Vampire Hunter D and they used it as an art auction example and posted it in the art arena and I myself am a member of gaia who's posted it there in the past.

yeah, it's happened- where someone stole my artwork... but it wasn't as big as an art contest, i had a good drawing taped in my locker and it fell out... maybe after school, and someone took off with it, and i had to leave. they kept looking back at me as if they were making sure i didn't notice, but i did alright, and it sucked, because no matter how hard i tried, i couldn't draw it the way it was before! Sad

yeah, this one was stolen.

Some person on MediaMiner tried to take it (funny thing was...it was showcased in MediaMiner so people KNEW it was mine T.T)

other than that my little sister steals from me and my best friend Jenni all the time.
She'll either claim the actual picture or trace it and then claim it as her own.
she's also stolen songs, poems, and stories from me. T.T thankfully, she's no longer allowed on the computer.... (although I've noticed this rule slackening.)

I hate art thieves.
That's why I'm on the abuse team T.T I won't rest until your ass is banned...

I've had it happen quite regularly to me online. The first instance was the image I use for my avatar. Some crappy forum RPG took it, cropped it, flipped it and wrote their site name all over it in some godawful font.
They took it down pretty sharp when I found out though, damn right they did.

One girl tried to post 4 or 5 images on a forum, claiming they were her pics. Unlucky for her, I also posted on that forum, and 3 of the pics she stole were requests I did for people there Laughing Stupid thieves are the best.

Other than that, it's just folk using my pics for RP portraits without asking, which is annoying (especially when they do nasty photoshop jobs to change the hair colour, etc)

damn straight o.o

we get some real tricky ones sometimes, takes FOREVER to find images (we have to have proof in order to delete them) and it can take me hours on end (straight) of searching on the net.

sometimes weeks o.o;;;;

Man, stealing a laptop? that sucks. Anyways, I haven't had enough time to make copies of my art or scan them so whenever I have art stolen I never see it again. Theives should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Rolling eyes

damn straight! but to most people it's just a paper with a bunch of perfect lines, and won't make a big deal out of it!

Techincally you can sue a person for stealing you art. A few facts you may not know.

When you are drawing, painting, whatever artistic thing you are doing. As you are creating it, there is an automatic copyright to it of sorts. Just because you haven't sent copy of it into the goervnment's copyright branch, doesn't mean there isn't on. Everything you make has one.

However, if you were to sue someone for theft of art, and you haven't sent it into the copyright branch, then it is more so difficult to prove to the judge that it is infact your work that you created, and not the thieves. Especially if the thief got ahold of the actually drawing, painting (whatever) itself and somehow sent it in themselves to copyright it. I've never heard of anyone doing that, it would be a little hard especially if you sign your things or tag them. But i'm sure some people have and will.

But in all truth, you want you can sue whoever the hell you want for art theft. And from the moment you've made one of your drawings a such, there is a copyright on it of sorts.

I've had a few pictures of mine stolen online... someone took them from my account here and posted them on their DeviantArt account. But, how can you prove that it's really your art, especially if it's posted on your own website or something? Is there a way of tracing the pictures online, to see where they showed up first? Can you even sue an art theif if the pic was stolen online?

Lol, Lasher, that's a nice icon, but it's really, really, really bright... it's mesmerizing... o.o

I don't see why you couldn't? If you have the money to do it, sure, why not. It's still theft really. But i'm not a lawyer so i can't put any of that into stone, but i do work for one. And all you do is e-mail the admins of deviant about it, explaining the stolen art, who stole, what it was stolen. Tell them when you made it, how you made it, and such. If it's something in your notebook or able to hang on your wall, take a camera, take a picture of it in your surroundings and send it to them "See, it's right here, on my desk/wall" etc etc. And if you ever need anymore help, you could always ask a few friends to e-mail them to stating your claim true. Hell, if anyone stole form an artist i knew and liked, and they didn't believe (admins of other site) that it was really theirs, i'd be willing to write an e-mail stating it so and i'm not just fan, that i play a part in running one of the internets largest art sites for fans and such.

It's all about being persistant, calm, collected, and not sounding like Surprisedh my god! they stole my art! they are so stealing!:

DA has the rip report button right under each picture. Click it, choose "copyright infringement" as the reason, and state your case that you're the orginal artist and link them to the pictures here on FAC. If they were here first, the date should be earlier than when they were posted on DA. All mass emailing does (like getting all your friends to report them) is draw their attention to it sooner, but it's more likely to annoy some of the mods, and really...your friends have no credibility in such matters because they're friends. If it's not taken care of after a week or two, you can try emailing the help desk or someone and ask about it.

As for tracking images online, there's a software program and service than can embed a pin number in images and allow them to be tracked (similar to the way Google searches for images, only it searches for the pin number). But it's more for corporations, since just the trial version costs $500+. Surprised
