Approval Panel

Since it has been brought up in practically every thread, I'm going to put this once and only once, and after this I really hope you'll all move on with your lives or at least become slightly more constructive than "OMG I H8 THIS!" (which is the equivalent of all that's been said). A lot of this has been put in other threads, but here it all is in one handy dandy post. So hopefully for the last time:

[b]Why does there have to be an approval panel?[/b]

This site is getting huge. Just look at the number of members and images if you don't think so. It's rather obvious that images are pushed way down the list in very short periods of time, and large portions of those submissions have problems. To help fix this, submissions must now be approved or rejected based on technical reasons (and soon some very basic quality limits).

[b]Can't people just report rule violations like before?[/b]

Yes, and the abuse reporting will still be a very important thing to do in cases of theft from other online artists, since the approval panel is certainly not going to do background checks on every submission. However, abuse reports will be taken care of much faster without 30 reports of users who uploaded official images, which are a waste of time for everyone. With the approval panel, those wouldn't even be submitted.

[b]What is the approval panel looking for?[/b]

Future minor quality control guidelines aside, which will be made clear when the time comes (and don't stress, they will be minor and if an image doesn't meet them, you really shouldn't be posting it here anyway). Things an image can be rejected for:

1. Official art.
2. Too large to be easily viewed. Most scanned images will need to be resized.
3. In the wrong category
4. Not rated properly
5. Too blurry. If the image was photographed with a digital camera, and the picture it too blurry to even make out what it is, it will most likely be rejected.

Most of those things are very easy to fix and resubmit.

It's impossible for there to be someone logged on to approve pictures 24/7, no matter how many people there are to do it. So naturally they will get backed up sometimes.

We're sorry you feel this way, but perhaps you'd be better off somewhere like DeviantART that doesn't have one. FYI, though, they have similar controls on a smaller scale. Mods will go through the galleries and delete anything in the wrong place. We're just doing that before it happens. Things that are stolen are reported and removed. Taking care of those things before they are submitted is much more efficient and will shorten abuse team waits dramatically. First people complain (and send very rude emails) about the abuse team being slow, and now they're complaining about this when we try to fix the other wait. You can't have both, and keeping official art and such off the site completely is a much better option.

Perhaps, if those artists are incredibly selfish and impatient, but the big picture is it's making the site a better place for all users, the ones who submit and even those who just browse and look. Those who complain come off as very self-centered and unable to step back and consider the reasons this has been put into place past the single fact their picture doesn't show up right away.

Yes it does. When it's approved, it shows up at the top of the list. Images are approved one by one, so until 10 other images are approved, yours will remain there. Now, unless it's in the last ten of the batch, it won't be left on there, but that's the same way as if there was no approval panel. A large backup means a lot of people were trying to submit, so your image wouldn't be there very long anyway. And with this, you even have a chance for it to be there a lot longer than it normally would be. Not all the time, but just maybe one will be. It's all by chance. Just as if you submitted and not many people happened to submit after you for awhile.

At this time, there are no quality controls. Only the reasons above are grounds for rejection (unless there's a special case). Sometime in the near future there will be, at which time some of that "crappy" art may be rejected as well.

Now, if you all don't like the approval panel, which is not going anywhere so long as it functions in a reasonably decent manner, please refrain from complaining unless you can suggest a good improvement.

Example:
BAD= LIKE OMFG! THIS SUXX0RZ!
GOOD= I think it would be better if the panel did this...._____________

Things that will not be changed:

~It will not be removed unless Denis decides it's not working in the way it should, which is up to him and not you
~There will never be enough people to approve things 24/7. It's impossible.

Some additional comments.

I am considering adding a seporate anything goes picture submission thing (random image board)

If your image is crap, and you want feedback on it after the quality controls are up, you can post it on the forum asking for help.

Image size guidelines is no wider than about 600px. I dont usually reject stuff tho unless its over 800px (i use 1280x1024 screen size so i dont notice oversized images as much)

I know the categories are a mess right now. They will be cleaned up sometime soon and the proper category guidelines will be less subjective.

Thank God someone said something. I'm so tired of these people complaing, as are the rest of us, I'm sure. I think it'd be good to start only excepting quality work. As it was today, we had around seventy-five pictures to approve or reject this morning. About half of those pictures were half-assed drawings that shouldn't really even be put online. The sooner the quality thing happens, the better. As for the whole board thing, that rocks, Denis. It's much better than them posting it on the site where people are expecting to see finished pictures.

I think it would be better if the panel did this: At least got to the picture before they got to somewhere are 60, it was 108 when I checked last today, NO BIG DEAL, just a thought.

Secondly, Denis, you said "once the quality controls are up"...so there will be quality controls? As in skill, or just like lined paper crap? Just wanna know to make sure, because the skill thing is usually why some other sites suck.

WE CAN'T! FOR THE LAST TIME, WHEN THE IMAGES ARE BACKED UP IT'S BECAUSE THERE IS NO ONE TO GET TO THEM. At no time will it be possible to have someone here 24/7. We have school, jobs, commitments to deal with as well as this site, so at times things will be backed up, but at other times things get approved very quickly.

One other thing: early in the day, it will be very backed up due to no one being on at 4am. I personally go to class very early in the morning and can't be approving images then. If the lives of you people revolve around seeing new pictures every waking second, that's pretty damn sad. Go take a walk, grab a sandwich, be a productive member of society until some new pictures are approved.

First off, you aren't giving us suggestions. You're basically telling us what to do. Maybe you have nothing to do, but we do. We have school, jobs, social gathings, ect. If I have to work on my f**king essays for my engish class then you can f**king wait and be happy you don't have to wait a few weeks. You wouldn't have the back up problem if kids didn't submit every little doodle they made or if they didn't keep posing pictures that are against the rules. You want to fix it? Why don't you start there and stop bitching at us when we're only helping.

Oh, and another thing. If it's 'no big deal', then you don't have to post about it, mmkay? You can't scream at someone with text, you can only capitalize letters and words, you little smart kid, you.

I wasn't able to do much last night because I HAD TO WORK ON EXTRA CREDIT. I go to bed around 11 on school nights and I can't stay online all day. I have friends who need my help, my life, Fallen's life, none of our lives will ever revolve around this site or around you and your little friends so get over it. Today my mother had to use the computer for something more important than me approving pictures... you know, for bills that have to be paid? We don't need you complaining when we're pulling our hair out because we wake up and come online to 70+ pictures to approve and/or reject. Just quit complaining and think before you post, it's not that hard, mmmkay? Good.

I feel bad. Those 100 or so pics... I didn't help with at all. My monitor recently broke down and i've had to share a computer with someone who is on the computer 24/7 when they aren't working. But by tuesday i will have the new monitor So i'll be on way more again

The Upload limit idea sounds great....like maybe 2 or 3 per person...I mean, you can't possibly upload 10 awesome pieces that you made all in one day...that could only happen if you're new to the site, but the newbies will get over it. I think it'll solve everything. I'll be happy, and I'm done arguing with you all unless you argue again for some reason. Sorry I sounded so mean the first time...just....frustrated

lol, yah, as if we can organize times so that thr 5 or 6 of us can each spread out for 24 hours, because, none of us have lives, and have nothing else to do

That should help a lot!! n.n Not only with approving, but posting and viewing.
With less pictures posted in a day, then more people will probably see other's pictures because they're not looking at the long list and going
"*grooooooan*.....look at all these....Okay, just a select few" like I do. I love seeing what's posted but there's no way I can look at EVERYTHING @.@;;;

Plus, hopefully that will bring up the quality. If people draw these like 5 or 6 pictures a day, but can only post 2 or 3, they're at least going to pick the best out of the 6 n.n

I would love for him to join up on the approval panel but he wouldn't be interested He isn't a fanart kinda person. I can barely get him to look at the stuff I draw. Starting tomorrow I'm back on for most of the day

approval panel, thats something new. its sounds good. everytime I come to fc I expect to see some good quality work, like the kind in private galleries. but I always see "5 min sketches" and stuff done in school during class.good ideas everybody.I have some extra time on my hands . I could probally help out sometime!!
