I've been curious for a while, as I do go through the new pics every so often, how many of you don't draw anime?
Before I get flamed for it, this is not an anti-anime thread -- I'm just trying to find common ground in a place where it seems Western-stylers, independents, and alternatives are a rare breed.
I, myself, do art in the Western mainstream comic book style. Or try to, anyway. Exaggerations are at a minimum, emotions are all shown on the face, usually without aid of floating emoticons, and detail remains fairly constant from panel-to-panel in a series.
If there's any other non-animers out there, reply!

I would say my comic art is as far away from anime as I can imagine. not that I dont like it. I think it is a tad over done right now in the comic field though. everything is starting to look the same. I grew up with DC, Marvel, Disney, Warner Bros, and MGM. my comic art is North American style, but definetly my own! I made it up to attempt to stay away from the main stream. its a little bit of this and a sprinkle of that, and what I find pleasing is that it shocks others on first sight. then they look it over and like it. like it to the point of following the comic, picking favorites from the four Angels. Im hoping it catches on big enough to get syndicated.

Well I have done a bit of western style comic characters from marvel. But I do more realism stuff, with my own styles. I dont mind the occasional Japanese style cartoon art here and there but not to big on it. ^_^

As much as I would give my left arm to be Pu-Sama (hey, I'm right handed, don't need it), anime and pretty much all comic styles don't like me. Someday I shall learn.
*running off to draw Peter Murphy...eh, his hand at atleast...confused? It's a seeeeecret* _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Count me in too. I'm no fan of anime and I'm even less a fan of its rabid popularity....
Now as for me and my style, I don't know how you'd categorize it but, frankly, I don't care either ^_^. I suppose it's about as far removed from anime as I know how to get. I don't really go for any comic-book styles, solid colored cels just can't compete with textured blends and blended textures.
If you divide the realm in twain between "form" (professional, realistic painting styles) and "function" (all comic styles), all of my drawings start out somewhere in light "function" territory (my rough concept sketches tend to be about function and practical issues anyway), but through the process of detailing, color-lining, and then final shading and colorblending, it crosses over that line into the realm of "form".
I guess that makes me bi-partisan in that respect ^_^ _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I'd have to say mine is halfway inbetween of both styles. None of the traditional expressions and huge mouths, small necks, rediculously colored hair, etc., but not exactly comic either. |

Feh... my style is a mix of everything I've ever seen, heard, said, and done. I myself do not consider it an anime/manga style and tend to get rather insulted when others do, but you can tell the influence was there.
When Western comic fans look at my stuff they're like "Pht, you draw anime", Anime fans on the other hand say "Oh, so you draw Marvel stuff".... Few and far between are the people who can actually recognize what I draw as it's own thing.
It also kind of depends on the character I'm drawing... example, this VS this (incedentally and almost ironically, the first picture actually is of an anime character while the second was inspired by something decidedly more North American...)
I choose not to be one of those people who dislikes anime just because it's popular. If it's good looking art, then I like it. If it's bland and boring then I don't. Simple enough. I tend to gravitate towards the more original anime and manga styles.... I have to admit that Hitosi Iwaaki's Parasyte was one of the biggest influences on my style originally... _________________

To me most anime/manga characters seem alike, so I don't find any fun in drawing them. I just like to stick to western style fanart or my own doodling. I don't even watch anime, so there wouldn't be anything for me to draw anyhow. I tried drawing a chibi once... it looked pretty western. _________________ |

My stuff is definitely western, 'classic fantasy' style (I hope). I have the occasional piece of comic art in my gallery, as I grew up on Marvel.
Kinda side-tracked into manga when I was 13-14, and it destroyed my art for a time - turned it into something generic and uninteresting, not even identifiable as mine. IMO, you gotta have real flair to draw manga, so people can look at a piece and say, "Yea..that's whoever's work, I'd spot em a mile off" - e.g. Kell, Aurore, Keiiii.
Took me a few years to shake that anime influence, but it still rears it's head when I sketch quickly, or stop concentrating...blech. Anyway, I get a kick out of drawing anime chars in a western/painterly style.

I try to dip into everything... but i mainly do anime. I would like to do more realism/semi realism. I also do these characters that i have been drawing since i was like 8... and they aren't anime at all. They kinda look like the Totally Spies chicks.. but different.... I don't post them though... as i never color them or anything. I only draw them when i'm trying to draw but can't seem to get focused. _________________ |

Uh, a mutated chibi is pretty fuckin' deformed. My mind doesn't register the simplification properly. I try doing toons every now and then, but I keep adjusting parts saying "no, that's wrong" until it's basically just realism. Blah. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Diathene your works of fantasy are fantastic! LC you definitely draw anime excellent, but your lastest stuff is blowing those away (and Im not being funny about the Inyuasha thing ). and Fallen when you start doing comic chars better than me...I will hate you (just kidding). but talking about chibis, and I know this pic is bias, I love Nicole Robertson's chibi works. shes getting tired of it, but I got lucky with this bit of art. I couldnt believe they really do look like my angels, but oh so different! _________________ 'It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. The more and more I draw, the more and more detail I put int it. And they start to just become fusions of fantasy and anime. Actually it is still mostly anime but it isn't as animeish as before. So my style is slowlly drifting to western styled fantasy. The only other fanatsy art I do is fanart of marvel characters. |

i couldn't do anime to save my life, and quite frankly, i wouldn't want to. some people can do that stuff very well and detailed and everything, but for the most part, everyone looks the same with differen't colors, costumes, and hairstyles (at least to me). so props to anyone who's keepin their characters unique in anime style.
x-men and marvel in general have been my biggest influences. i love the style and attempt to do it often. penciling comics would be the coolest job ever, but i have to get much better. |

I actually started out using comic book style art, and Jim Lee was my biggest influence at that time, even if I was also a huge anime fan.
The problem with western style comic art is, it became too similar. Everything suddenly looked either Jim Lee, or J. Scott Campbell (Gen 13), and I think it's still the same today. I got bored, so I went the anime/manga way.
I do a little mix of both in my art, but anime/manga style is a heavier influence right now.
I still appreciate western style comic book art though. |
