First off the title's a song, don't think I"m just being randomly annoying lol there's a reason to it.

anyway!
This came up in a conversation earlier and I wanted to get other people's opinions on it (just out of curiosity)

Lots of people sell their drawings (or draw for money personally) and a lot of other artists think that this is "so wrong" and "selling out"
Up until quite recently my best friend thought this until today she was telling me I should try to sell my drawings/etc

So, do you think selling your drawings is "wrong" or do you simply think of it as a job you can enjoy? n.n

Personally, I've got no beef with it.
If you can, awesome! More power to ya!
I think I'd lead a much more satisfying life if I could work with art as a carreer so it'd be interesting to try.
We'll see.

How about you guys?

Legally, selling fanart can be wrong (Copyright infringment). Actually if you want to get technicial, fanart itsself is questionable.

Anyway, Japanese artists at least dont seem to mind much, if they did all the doujin artists would have legal problems.

As for selling your own origional art, I dont see anything wrong with it. If its your creation its your right to do whatever you want with it. Famous peices of art sell for millions of dollars. If people are willing to pay you 5 or 20 bux or more for your art I say go for it.

I think there is nothing wrong with selling your art... except, like denis said, fanart is legally wong because of copyright... but if you're selling your original artwork, and people like it and want to buy it, what's the problem with that?? There are people selling their artwork all the time, in stores, on the street... People want to share their artwork... if they didn't, this website and others like it wouldn't exist... and if people want to pay for it, even better for you!!

I would think of selling my artwork, if I thought there were any point and people wouldn't look at me, asking themselves, "What does she think she's doing, who would pay for that??" I'd need to do a LOT of improving before I would even consider trying to sell my art...

If you can do it, sell it. *cough*link in my sig*cough* Rolling eyes

Selling Fanart Summary

For the most part, selling the original copy of a piece of fanart, provided it's not a copy of existing art, is considered "ok". No company will bother going after someone for a single piece of artwork, especially since they could just as well sell it offline and no one would be the wiser. Oh, and in that case they're violating trademark, anyway, not copyright. Razz As Denis has pointed out on numerous occassions, most Japanese artists/companies are much more relaxed about the issue than other countries, and some artists are incredibly strict about it (Anne Rice, the Pern lady, Disney, etc.). Prints of fanart are a big no-no.

Quite technically, just creating fanart violates trademark. Most fanart is a violation of trademark, unless it's a copy of existing work (then it's copyright). Publishing the image in any way is a violation of trademark and/or copyright, including putting it on the internet. When it comes to commissions, it's pretty much fine to do commissioned fanart work, since who will really know? However, you can't advertise that fact. So you can do a commissioned picture of Sonic, but you can't advertise yourself as someone who will do Sonic pictures.

Digital is a grey area, since the only equivalent of a "real copy" is a limited edition single print.

Yeah. 'Case anyone was wondering. Rolling eyes
