If most R&B artists don't write their own songs, yeah I'm saying they're shit. A glorified karaoke singer singing something they did not create. If they didn't write it, what's so special about them? Some vocal talent? La di da, there are tons of amazing singers out there, and you'll never find the best ones. What matters is not the talent, it's the talent combined with the creativity. Walk into a Guitar Center and listen to how many idiots play Stairway To Heaven or Eddie VH tunes. Does that make them as good as Eddie or Paige just because they can play it? No, it's the fact those men wrote and not just played it.
Y'all are giving vocalists way more credit than they deserve. Yes, the voice is one of the most appealing instruments, and the frontman always gets the most attention in a band, but that doesn't mean they should be above the standards of every other instrument. Teen pop artists are handed some lyrics, taught the melody, and shoved in a booth to record the song. A song someone else wrote and someone else played, and that someone will never get the credit they deserve for giving that individual a hit single. The only situation where singers don't necessarily have to write all the lyrics is in a complete band setting with a member who is a better writer. But even then, the credit goes to the whole band, not "Oh, that was a really good Vince Neil song" no it was a good Crue song, even if Nikki wrote it.
Saying "oh that's rock music" when it comes to creativity is crazy. Would that mean only rock music is a respectable creative genre? Because all music should be created by the artist. Teen Pop is like taking a really complicated piece of lineart, someone else adding some decent color, and putting their name in big bold letters with the artist who actually drew the picture in some scribbled little corner no one will ever see. Then the colorist getting famous for it. Crazy. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I'm not going to say that they're s**t if they didn't write their own songs, but I don't think they should be famous purely because of their voice... You SHOULD have talent and creativity to make it in the music business, but sadly, you don't... you just need to be able to sing and look good doing it...
It does seem that it's true that rock music is the only type of music with the actual artists creativity behind it, it's a sad world we live in...
And yeah, that's a good comparison, fallen... most people can color some lineart and make it look good, but if you can't draw, what do you think you're doing?? You aren't creative going around coloring in coloring books... again, VERY good point...

One of the reasons rock music (not counting teen pop rock) is one of the most creative is because of how it works. You can't be a band, never write a song, and play gigs. You can be a cover or tribute band, but that's not the same thing and will never get label interest (with the exception of a couple notable groups who have made their name with covers, but they're not overly popular). In order to play the gigs and work up the following, you need songs. And you need songs to learn how to work as a group.
Pop artists on the other hand can't. On their own, they don't have an army of writers, choreographers, musicians, and producers behind them to mix the track as they sing it. They can't play the club circuit with their original tunes, at least not the glossy airbrushed way they end up in the studio. So instead, they sing karaoke, go on one of the stupid talent search television shows, n' send labels a tape. All the label wants is a voice and a look. They've got creativity on the payroll. It's not good creativity, mind you, it's pop creativity. But it's still a catchy original creation. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Where's the fun, otherwise? I mean, I could just play my sh*tty intro to "Paradise City"(I'm learning), but people won't like me unless I can play my own stuff. _________________ Not all who wander are lost.
