So, what are your thoughts on the soon-to-be-released Nintendo DS?
Two 3" screens, voice recognition, touch screen, ability to transmit text messages...
And wireless functions could link players in the same room or across the country.
So, just wondering, what are your thoughts of this?

The dual-screen interface is unique, and the touch-screen interface for the lower screen provides one thing that NO other console has inherently supported: A pen/mouse type interface!
But perhaps the most interesting implementation of the touch-screen interface I've heard about is that Namco is working on a Pac-Man game which uses the lowe touch-screen as a trackball! Sorta, like how the old Centipede arcade game used a trackball instead of a standard joystick....
Nintendo has its fans and franchises and it knows how to use them. The only thing that really leaves is the issue of . . . battery life.
I mean, computers and consoles are getting faster and faster and faster, and battery life simply can't keep up with the progress. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
Battery & Power Management: The battery is rechargeable and the unit features a low-energy-consumption design. The DS also has Power Management functions of Sleep mode and Standby mode. In Sleep mode, players can stop and resume game play whenever they like. If the user receives a message from a friend or user nearby, DS activates itself from Standby mode.
I'm pretty sure they'd have that covered anyway.. Something they'd want to sell so bad to keep with competitors, they'd need to get something worthwhile down for battery life..
Yeah I'm pretty sure they'd have it pegged..
Anyway, it's miles better than the N-Gage and the PSP so.. I'd probably get one if they're worth it.. |

The psp has moving parts (the games are on some sort of miniature dvd's) so you can't even shake it too much. Very convenient for a portable system huh?
They brag about the graphics on the psp, and I'm sure they are great, but who is going to notice the difference between N64 type graphics and ps2 type graphics on a small screen like that? Nintendo made the right choice in robustness and innovation I think. And I can play my gba games on the DS too. |

The DS is a great idea - risky, but great. You can't fault Nintendo on their handheld systems at all, and I think this new direction should work for them. Innovation can only be a good thing!
On the battery life issue, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere it's going to have a huge battery life. I can't say it's a definite thing, though.

I doubt they'd let something that important go unchecked and unnaccounted for...
They'll have something up thier sleeves, you wait and see |

I need to reserve the DS soon. Sony is out of their little minds trying to take on Nintendo in the handheld world, ecspecaily when they're selling a bunch of junk together for one crappy system. I mean why would you use disc, they can scratch, become lost easier, you have to care for the disc, it takes a ton of battery power to spin the thing. But I can't wait for my DS. They're so shiney! I think every function they have is cool. The DS comes out Nov. 21 and cost $150 (U.S. info) I just can't wait! |

Well I like nintendo... and I like nintendo's portables ... my sp is great for killing time when I'm out of the house. But I don't know what to think about the DS. I'm going to wait and see what happens with it. The PSP... and I hate sony, a lot. But it does have the ability to not only compete.... but to beat the DS. Sony has loads support from newer gamers. And it always seems to be more popular. I'm also however interested to hear what goes wrong with it. You know major hardware flaws. Gotta love hardware flaws! I will say something in nintendo's support, they don't F' around when it comes to hardware. Their stuff is the best quality, hands down. I've never had to repair a nintendo system, or even had a controller break. |

I know there is going to be at least one FF and Castlevania for the GB DS, and since the gba castlevanias were so excellent, I;m not thinking twice about buying it when it's available. We europeans will have to wait untill early march though... |

The way I see it, it's a small price to pay for not having Bush as our president.
Anyway, did someone see the excellent super mario DS footage on gamespot? It's like.. mario 64 with 4 players and minigames! And you use the touchscreen to move the camera! |

I believe it's called "Metroid Prime: Hunters" and in development for the DS. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

LmAo L3x at both comments the Bush one and the GameBoy one..
Yeah.. Portable handheld gaming from Nintendo. Hey!! Wadda ya know.. It's a new Gameboy..
Zen, no-one is slagging it off anyway, so please don't freak out... The whole thing that the DS is a predessecor (sp) of the GameBoy is a very good thing.
....Chill, kiddah bean. |

You mean successor....
Also, while it's true they say the DS will play GB games, I heard that the DS will not play old GB or GBC games -- just GBA games.
Sad to hear that but it makes sense from a programmatic point of view. You can only go so far with a given architecture without losing backwards compatibility or creating major hardware/software conflicts....
I mean, take the IBM/DOS architecture for example. You can run ancient 8086 apps on a modern P3 or AMD system in theory (since it's the same machine code), but in practice, a lot of old x86 apps aren't "timed" properly to run on faster machines, and with multi-tasking and a lot of new features, some old programs just plain crash. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
