Evanescence is pretty good, it's a weird mix the vocals and guitar, but it's good. I have the CD "Fallen" |

NOTICE/DISCLAIMER: You asked what I think.
Honestly, I think they're a cheap, trendy little group of posers who are cashing in on the hip "goth" scene kids are in love with right now. And the chick saying she's not "(wannabe) goth", well then don't dress like it. And the fact they're a Jesus band, and then denying they're one makes me hate them more. I don't know if they've outwardly said they aren't, but they certainly aren't advertising it because that's not "cool" and won't get you on the top 40 singing about God. And no it won't, but don't change what you are to fit the top 40 (my same complaint against current Bon Jovi, as it so happens).
The singer can't take a joke and is way too high and mighty. Case in point, the Howard Stern show was always bagging on her, saying in person she's really ugly and kinda chubby (and it's true without her makeup she's...uhhh...not like in the videos), but ya know, who really cares? That's not the problem, but one of the guys from the show was introducing them onstage and started talking about how hot she was (which they all agreed was a lie to begin with), and then the chick comes out with a real bitchy attitude of "Actually, we're all hot..." Whatever, honey.
The music is...bleh. I personally don't like her voice, though I know everyone's talking like she's the next Whitney Houston. The lyrics probably make the baby Jesus cry, and the videos don't help anything. Go back to what I said about cashing in on the trendy goth fad. A lot of that I'm sure is whatever label they're on, because it's a label's job to make money off their artists, but they can also go sign new ones after the public is tired of them overplaying every damn one. Ever notice there's no huge artists anymore? There's no legends. Everyone's big for 15 minutes then it's on to someone new, and it is because of the changing industry and everyone out to make a dollar, but it's really sad. There's never gonna be another Aerosmith, another KISS, another AC/DC, another Led Zep, another Sabbath, another Beatles, another Stones... any new group of talented individuals with something to contribute to music besides making as much money as they can in a two year span by smiling and nodding at the labels.
A bit of a tangent perhaps, but very much related to my hatred of this band. It's quite obvious why I stopped caring about the music industry in the early 90s. And I don't even hate all new bands. There are some, hey, you're doin' your thing so more power to ya, but these "bands" that swing from the balls of the first label that will sign them and promise them albums, tours, videos... ugh.
"I want my rock stars to look different than the guy that pumps my gas"
Now excuse me why I go put the soap box away. Feel free to kiss their ass now, since I've thoroughly torn them down. And before any lovers of this band start up on me...don't. You won't like what happens. Listen to whatever you want, I won't try to stop you. I know very well that the argument could be made of "but all the bands you like were trendy!!!!111". Indeed they were, but please show me where these new trendy groups lived in an abandoned warehouse full of cockroaches while playing non-paying club gigs and trying to get a label rep to come. Show me where, in their little suburban lives, they have any basis for any lyrics worth writing (teen angst does not count). Show me where any of them are bringing anything new to the industry that hasn't been done a thousand times before. There's a very big difference between starting a trend and following one.
Sorry, Jake, I'm sure you were expecting a thread of "Yeah, I guess they're pretty cool" or "OMG!!! Evanescence is teh uber l337!".... but I couldn't resist. :P
EDIT: and I just have to say...if one more person assumes my being called "Fallen" is after that damn CD...I'll kill them. I will kill them with a jagged vinyl record and cast them into Hell, where they're forced to listen to Wham! for all of eternity. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Bwahaha! Exactly. It's frightening, though, how many Christian 'goths' there are in the world. There's this one 'punk' chick who has a pro-life bumper sticker on her little newspaper bag thing all the 'punks' are carrying around.. bah.. I thought punkish people were supposed to be all like..anarchy-ish and stuff.. and pro choice and all that green libertarian mumbo jumbo.. I unno..ah well..ok I can't think straight today.. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

Boo, boo to the birthname. It doesn't lend itself well to "pet names", anyway. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

On the topic of voices, I just have to say that 99% of the male "singers" right now need to get off the stage. They all sound like the average whiny teen. Being "punk" or "rock" does not mean you don't need talent. There may have been a lot of sh*tty 80s bands (hair metal or otherwise), but man did most of those guys have some nice voices. That's one of the huge reasons no "bands" stand out right now. The "singers" all sound the same. Go back to Hot Dog on a Stick, guys, please.
Ok I'm done. Till someone brings up another point. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

ok evanescence is NOT GOOD. i completely agree with fallen, so luckily i won't have to go into a whole big thing since she stated some very good points. their lyrics are nothing special, her voice is ok but too whiny (whitney houston? no i dont think so). the only semi-good part of that one song was when the guy from 12 stones sang. and why the hell does everyone call them "goth???" what just because she wears dark makeup and black clothing she's goth? i think these people need to get their definition of that word straight. it's more than how a person looks. they're just buying into the "cool" image to get more success, so listeners will think they're cool and tragic b/c they listen to poppy "goth" music. all their songs sound the same. ick they're just like linkin park. or a really bad, wannabe version of splashdown. and they're overrated.
lol i didnt know they were a christian band. o and yea sorry if i offended anyone, as fallen said- listen to what you want. just don't me listen to it
heh heh i kinda like wham... wake me up before you go-go, don't leave me hangin' on like a yo-yo... _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

Oh, I have nothing against Wham! really. George Michael is a great singer and mighty good lookin' regardless of what team he plays for. But admit it. No one wants to hear them over and over for all of eternity. And George gets bonus points for bein' cool about the cop thing.
Howard Stern said they were a Jesus band. And Howard does his research. Listen to their songs...wake me up inside? Oh yeah.
I agree about the guy being the only interesting part of that song, and only in the video 'cause I like seein' the chick fall. I saw a picture of her without makeup that was funny. No reason to hate a band, but just funny 'cause they layer so much crap on her face otherwise. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. haha i saw her without her makeup on too! i really dont see the big deal about her- she's weird looking with or without makeup. and yeeea now that i think about it i get the jesus band thing. and of course i trust howard stern.
hooray for wham! but yea i DEFINITELY would not be able to stand that for eternity. o well. it's better than listening to some annoying pop band (i.e. britney, good charlotte, or evanescence) for the rest of my condemned life. _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

I love how people exaggerate things into the best band ever...especially new pop and pop-metal and rap. Even I don't call my favorite classic bands the best bands ever, and y'all know how much I care about my boys (and a few girls). You can't even pick a "best band ever" (even if VH1 would call it Madonna) because they've all had so much influence in different ways. I know it's a hyperbole, but still... (and no, I'm not picking on evan-whatever and all the chic groups of today...Gn'R and Aerosmith aren't the "best bands ever", either)

ahahaha i know exactly what you mean fallen. i love how some band will suddenly become "omg my FAVOURITE band" or "they are the BEST EVER" in like 1 day for some people. they'll hear one song by the band and suddenly they're the greatest thing on earth, but then tomorrow a completely different band is the best. ah well it's fun to exaggerate, but you're rite- you really can't name any single band as "the greatest band ever" (not even the beatles or led zep) because they're all different and impact people in different ways. gotta love those vh1 countdowns, tho! _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

ok....it personally pisses me off when people won't listen to a band b/c they're POSERS!!! hello, even if they are "posers", i still think they have really good music! god, i am so sick of other punks or rebels or whatever calling people "posers"! ok u can tell who real posers r b/c u know someone who was wearing abercrombie one day and hot topic the next is obviously a poser, but some people take it too far! i mean when you call someone a "poser" that's judging them, and that's the reason they probably became punks or goths in the first place, b/c a prep or somebody judged them.....a bit ironic don't you think?! <_< |

The funny thing is. Punk isn't a fashion. It shouldn't ever be viewed as a fashion. Those that think of it as nothing more are, in fact, posers. Just as those who just exploit it to make a buck (example: bands such as evanescence) are, in fact, posers. There is no denying that fact. I have absolutely no respect for those who refuse to be educated about the lable they choose to adopt.
No one becomes 'goth' or 'punk' simply because someone, as you say, judged them. It's far more complicated than that. It has much more to do with political beliefs and moral standards than someone judging someone one day and the next they [the judged] decide to be something they're not because they were criticized for being themselves. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

i agree with you, angelsnest. i know we all do it, but i really don't like when people label others or label themselves. i may have called one or two people "posers" but usually i just mean that the way they act and dress is just based on some fake band and that their idea of "punk" is completely different from the real anarchical punk. this doesn't make them bad people or anything, it's just how it is. i think sometimes it's just easier to separate people or alienate yourself by placing them in certain groups, which can later be used as an excuse to not like them or make fun of them. (uhhh not that i make fun of people for their music or anything... heh heh)
but people always label others by the way they dress or what music they listen to (i.e. prep, jock, punk, goth, emo), and it bothers me because when you label someone like that then soon that's all people see- they can't look past the outer layer of "punk" music or abercrombie clothing and then that person is only known for their classification. they have no depth. my friends and i have been called the "punk" or "emo" kids or even "ska" kids if someone around actually knows what ska is. however, i listen to lots of different music, i wear whatever i want (well, i make/alter a lot of my own clothes, too...), and i have a lot of other interests and facets of my personality that have nothing to do with my music or outer appearnce. so i think we should all believe what we want and listen to what we want and not let other people's opinions or conceptions influence us or hold us back. eh i sound like some "express yourself" self-esteem video. just stop listening to me. rite now. _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |
