Do you giggle every time the name Yamamoto is mentioned? When your little brother watches Power Rangers do you annoy him by changing the colors to 'Sepia' and 'Salmon Pink?' Do know what the legendary 'Solar Hands' are? If so, you may be a fan of a series that is somewhat less than mainstream. While this can be a good thing (lack of fangirls), it can also be a pain because no one knows what you're talking about when you mention the giant schoolgirl who strolled though Shinjuku in a miniskirt.

Well, here's the place to talk about you favorite obscure titles, whether it's something that's been out for ages and never developed a following or it's the newest fansub fresh from Japan.

If all the anime you've ever seen is off Cartoon Network, this is not the thread for you.

If anyone doesn't know...The shows I referenced are: the fanboy's dream 'Colorful,' the cult classic 'Shinesman, the brand new 'Yakitate Japan,' and 'Colorful' again. Love'em? Hate'em? Never heard of'em?

....Has anyone else seen Yakitate yet? The first fansubs just came out this week. It's hilarious. Laughing

i tend to lean more towards the animes/mangas not many people read, i.e.:

Akira
Eerie Queerie (Ghost!)
Tokyo Babylon
Descendants of Darkness (Yami NO Matsuei)
R2
Kagerou Nostalgia
Kodocha (Child's Toy)
X

and so on ^^

Well, Cheese master, most of those have been on TV, albeit not on CN...I liked betterman, ticked me off when I didn't get to see the ending. I was soooo close, but something came up and I missed the last couple eps. I like D, too, great movies. You seen both? And chobits...that show is a diabetic coma waiting to happen. There should be laws about being that cute!

Eerie Queerie has to be one of the funniest mangas I've read, and DoD is awesome, can't wait for more of that to come out! Couldn't really get into X though, and usually I love Clamp. Haven't read Tokyo Babylon for the same reason. My boyfriend reads Kodocha I think, I might have to steal it from him for a bit. ;)

Speaking of mangas, you checked out Threads of Time yet? It's really interesting, a modern boy who may or may not be the son of a Lord in ancient Korea...who manages to go back in time, unless it's just a dream while he's in a coma....only one volume out so far, and I'm hooked!

I've seen more Obscure anime, than mainstream. I mostly watch fansubs.

I haven't seen Yakitate yet, I'll get it tonight or tomorrow. I am not impressed with its concept, but anime has an amazing ability to take seemingly stupid concepts and make great series (who would have thought a show about go or cooking or glasses would be any good?) and the screenshots on jascii look good.

Eerie Queerie was funny, but i have to admit the ending was a little anticlimactic, considerign all of the suspense and suchlike building up before it...

Tokyo Babylon is MUCH better than X, in my opinion, and is a lot easier to get into...not to mention Hokuto's tireless efforts of trying to get Subaru and Seishirou together is hilarious.

Kodocha is good too, quite angsty and deep with still quite a bit of humor to it...one of the few shojo slightly-romance-centric series i've ever been able to get into..

YnM (DoD) is really awesome; i haev the anime so i already know the ending, and the series is absolutely amazing; dark, deep, twisted, and bloody. AND it's still considered shojo.

Excel Saga! Excel Saga! Excel Saga!

I own the boxed set.. It is my animated Bible...

Magic Users Club is also one of my favorites that I doubt many have ever seen. ^^ And if they have seen it they've usually just seen the OAV and not the TV series. Pity since they miss out on seeing Jurie (can't recall how to spell the name...) who is the most gender confusing character I've ever seen.. and I've watched the series about three times through! o.O

You know.. I heard Eerie Queerie had several sequels...
Did they even kiss once in that volume? Anyway there are supposedly a few sequels out there to Eerie Queerie but I don't think they're being translated.

Yakitate is awesome simply because it's got such a ridiculous premise, and take it seriously. Saw it at club last night, we were howling. It's the funniest thing I've seen in awhile. For anyone with no clue what we're talking about, it's about a boy who wants to make a bread that Japan will be known for throughout the world, known as Japan which is actually a play on words. He's got the legendary 'Solar Hands' which makes bread better...somehow...just watch it.

Yeah, Eerie Queerie ended kinda blandly, but I liked the extra afterwards about Hanasuma's(?) name. Excel Saga is awesome, they've got the dub on On Demand cable where I live, dubbed though. And I absolutely love Magic User's Club and I have seen the series, but I can't remember Jurie...wait...the little androgynous kid? Yeah, he/she/it was funny. I liked Aburatsubo. He's funny, but I couldn't remember his name for the longest time. For half the series I called him Bob. ^^; And if there's a sequel to Eerie Queerie I want it! Maybe there'll be scanslations somewhere.

Anyone seen Shingetsutan Tsukihime? It's really good. Vampires, and family dynamics that remind me of the Sohma family from Fruits Basket. Actually, several people agreed that it's kinda like a very dark Furuba without the changing into animals bit. And more death and destruction. That's actually a really bad description. But the show's good. ^_^

yeah, that extra about Hasunama's name was good, but doesn't make up for the disappointing ending.

that Shingetsutan Tsukihime sounds insteresting...

FFU is pretty obscured, cause it got low ratings in Japan.
I know most of you think it sucks but I enjoy it alot.
And I'm not a newbie to anime cause I watch it! <_<

*looks back at last post* Um...yeah. That description of Tsukihime was bad. I shouldn't post when I'm about to collapse from exhaustion any more. Its a lot better than I made it sound.

Matt, you've seen Scrapped Princess to? That's my current favorite show. We're watching it at my anime club, that's how I saw Tsukihime too.

Anyone else seen Dragon Half or Shinesman? Cult classics right there, almost criminal that they were ended so soon.

Anyone ever heard of 'Locke the Superman?' We watched the first OVA two nights ago at PJAC's annual 'Anime so bad it's scary' halloween party. It was fun to mock. Shamelessly ripped off Star Wars.

Dragon Half...wasn't that hentai? O.o

I haven't watched any obscure anime as of yet, it's too hard to find. The only one close to unknown that I've seen was Akira.

Dragon Half isn't quite hentai. Just boobs. And Akira's not unknown, it's classic. ~_^

And since LDD posted while I was editing, I'll ask again. Locke the Superman ring any bells? Saw the first OVA at club, ripped off Star Wars terribly.

*stares at Denis's list* Wow. That's a lot of anime. A lot a lot. Wow. Hey, what did you think of Key: the Metal Idol? I watched that with my anime club...I didn't much care for it...we were watching Eva at the same time and I was actually more confused by Key than Eva.

Anyone watch Voices of a Distant Star? Really sweet romance, done by some guy and his girlfriend on a single computer, and they did the voices. More or less a short movie with two characters. Bit of a tearjerker I thought. Really impressive though, especially for the way it was made.

I liked key, tho it definitely was weird.

I've seen Voices of a Distant Star (Hoshi no koe), amazing animation. I have other works by that same guy and there is another one comming out (which was supposed to be out quite some time ago but keeps getting delayed. Its called
Beyond the clouds, and as a special bonus, i'm attaching its trailer here.

and a music video by the guy too.
