the top 10 was okay, but I think this way the Fanfictions, etc will get more attention (since in order to see pictures there's a button right next to it to see written work too)

A lot of the people I talked to didn't even know that that button was there on the original page set up

QUOTE (Isami)
My suggestion would be the main font used for the site. Times New Roman seems a little out of place. I think something a little softer and sans serif might work, like Arial, Verdana, or Tomaha (erm... sp??). Whatever you have used here in the forums would work nice!
I tried to change the font, but it didn't look right. This will take some work to make look right.

QUOTE (Lexar)
too bad the aproval queue amount is gone in the new layout. It helped me pick a good time to upload pictures
Its back, on the Add Fanwork page.

QUOTE (Stratadrake)
The "Add Fanwork" and "Edit Profile" buttons appear even when you're not logged in to the main site. If you're not logged in when you click on one, you should get a message saying that you need to be registered and/or logged in first.
Problem with removing them, less bottom row than top row buttons doesn't work well. But I did remove the edit profile when no logged in and fixed the error message.

QUOTE (Me)
in improving the thumbnails I had to purge their cache so expect the site to run slower for a few days while the thumbnail cache gets rebuilt.
This is done now.

The search skin thing pointed out by Raymei has been fixed.
Y'know, I kinda miss the lack of the "Latest 10 Pictures" on the main page sometimes...
Not sure what purpose it would serve. The pictures of the hour make a good quick look at a picture kind
of thing and all recent pics are listed (and thumbnailed) but their submission time.

They just took up space on the front page, that space will be used for another purpose in the future.

Think you could put it back on the approval page for us Approval Panel people? I found it quite useful there. If not, no biggie... ^.^

The buttons themselves don't need to be removed. They can just be de-linked, and/or have a "blank" button image to show in their place.

Is that why, recently when I viewed a thumbnails listing, it seems to load erratically (loading... stop... loading... stop... loading... stop, loading..., etc.) ? It's the only place on FAC (or anywhere on the Net) where I've seen such behavior....

I don't know. Take a look: Screencaps from System Monitor showing my modem activity. As a 56k, its average speed ranges from 4kb to 7kb per second.

On the left side is my modem activity sampled/averaged once every 30 seconds, measuring about 2kb per second, pitiful even by 56k standards.

On the right side is my modem activity sampled once every 3 seconds. Go, stop, go, stop (average of 2 thumbnails' worth of data for each interval), no clue why it's happening, but notice that just before it stops there's a burst of extra data sent across the wire.

This didn't happen at all until the server/database change, now it happens everytime I go to any thumbnail listing. And that's the only place it happens

The database is only used to generate the html, so if the page is loaded, but not the thumbnails, its not that.

The graph looks like its requesting thumbnails 2 at a time, this may be part of the way your web browser works. Try using IE and see if it does the same.

On slow dialup, even if the thumbs are being generated, the slowdown should be minimal. It may be the keepalive settings. If you get the same thing in IE, I'll expariment with the keepalive in apache (I lowered it for preformance reasons quite some time ago)

Oh! Another clue: The stop-go behavior doesn't happen for linked thumbnails, only uploaded ones. In NS, when viewing a thumbnails list with mixed linked/uploaded pictures, the "stop-go" behavior doesn't set in until most of the linked images have finished loading.

Okay, now trying the Recent Thumbnails listing in IE5....

Bah! IE5 gave up and left me with a blizzard of Red X's Of Doom to contend with... (begins clicking "Show Picture" like a madman...)

But other than that (an IE5 fault? Razz) -- solid transfer rate, no hiccups.

Now testing how IE behaves on my gallery thumbnail listing....

...and it happens again. IE5 loaded about 75 (out of 90) thumbnails, the rest get the Red-X-Of-Doom treatment. But still no hiccups in the transfer rate.

Now testing my gallery thumbnails on NS7.2... a few momentary dips in the transfer rate (about once every 10-15 seconds), but no dead stops.

Hmm... final test for now, Recent (Yesterday's) Thumbnails page on NS7.2....

... and I'm not seeing any large gaps in the transfer rate. Weird -- if you tweaked a setting server-side, for all I know that could have been it.

* * * * *

On another note, I saw the approval queue stat on the Add Fanwork page. Yay! Myself, I think the best part about it isn't the fact that it's back where we can find it, but the little rating next to it saying "Moderate" or "High" Cool

I didn't change nothin'. The intermitant nature of your problem makes it even harder to track down......

IE generally gives up on loading things faster than other browsers. I'm on fast cable, and even in the middle of the night, I can't get a page of them to load when set at 500 per page (about 400 worth load).

I think you just need to get yourself a highspeed connection.

Afraid that might be the case -- intermittent bugs are THE WORST kind....
I can't get a page of them to load when set at 500 per page (about 400 worth load).
Five... hundred? Surprised Whoa, I didn't know the pages could be set that high... not that I'd be one to do that, because shorter pages are easier to surf....

And, chances of getting a high-speed connection around my home are essentially zero.

I had an idea for the main page logo:
Along with the FAC mascots you could have little cartoonised head shot pics of the main staff and their names under them who run the site, especially Denis.

I dunno... the blue with the forced red and green doesn't look very good IMO. Sure as a gimmick it could be funny at christmas but not if we have to look at it an entire month, for pete's sake it's barely december yet.

It buurrrnnnsss! It burns us! Surprised

Um, yeah. Blue on red like that has seriously got to be THE most jarring color contrast ever invented. Any other link color would look better on a red backdrop (e.g. #008000, #000080, #800080, etc.), but not standard blue.

Oh, DG-Sama's mascot (on the right) doesn't show correctly, she's shoved off the right edge and all you see is the sleigh and reindeer.

Other than that, the Christmas scheme kicks! Cool
