Haha, uh oh I poked a nerve... *gets the stick ready*
I don't throw the term "poser" around lightly. It's reserved for those who really are, I assure you. Here, let me tell you what I feel a poser is:
~Someone who changes what they are to fit into a group even when they have no idea what that group is about or means. They just change their appearance in order to be accepted and in a lot of cases benefit from it.
Punk is not a fashion. I like a lot of punk music like the Sex Pistols and Ramones, but I don't dress in studded bracelets and dog collars with pink hair. However, another person who listens to N'Sync but dresses in Hot Topic from head to toe calling themselves "punk" when they couldn't even tell you what punk is besides "uh...Good Charlotte's punk! hardcore, dude!"...they are a poser. To them "punk" is a style, and they're benefitting from looking that way by thinking they're "cool" and "trendy".
Goth is not a fashion. For one, it's an architectural style and past that a sub-culture. Ask any kid in black eyeliner and lipstick with their hair dyed jet black and they couldn't tell you anything about it. And goth is far far far from "angsty woe-is-me" junk, but it's what the "teen goths" have adopted. It's "cool and different" to look that way and be into all that dark stuff, but I guarantee you a very small percentage of the kids dressing that way share the beliefs. Hell, you can be "goth" and wear baby pink. It's all about the mindset, value system, beliefs, how you look at the world, not what you paint on your face.
Look however you want, I'm not saying people shouldn't dress that way, not at all. But don't pretend that how you look makes you any cooler or different because you're "punk" or "goth". Using those names without even knowing what they are makes you a poser because you're trying to make yourself look better by attaching who you are to everything those two terms used to be. And don't think I look at everyone who looks the way Evanescence does and call them posers. And I'm not saying that I don't associate with people just because they are, I know several people who are cool as fuck but wear Good Charlotte shirts everyday and have their hair dyed black and purple. Fine with me, a poser doesn't mean I hate you, it's just what you are. There are people out there who like that style and share "gothic" viewpoints, however that band clearly doesn't (and it would take another description twice as long as this novel to explain), thus they're cashing in on that appearance trying look like something they aren't. Posers.
And sure, definitely decide by their music whether you'll listen to them or not. A band can be the coolest people in the world, but if they make crap music, who they are doesn't help that. I personally don't like their music, personal opinion. I'm not saying their music makes them posers. If it was only me not liking their music, I'd say they're no talent hacks and leave it at that. But their abuse and rape of the "gothic" image...well, we've pretty well covered that they're posers.
Now please... you've all made me waste far more time than I should have on this little group of drama-school dropouts. Like I had anything better to spend it on. I'll say it again, you like them, whoopadidoo. I'm not saying people who like them are bad people. Sheep in a lot of cases, perhaps, but that's a whooole separate discussion. I'm just defending my opinion of a "band", which is something I've had to do a lot of. One of my favorite bands is Poison...you think I haven't seen enough shit said about them?
At some point you just have to disconnect from the group and realize you aren't a member of the band and nothing said about them, unless specifically said so, is about or effects you. It's really kinda stupid to get offended. I'd spend a lot of time yelling if I got upset everytime someone called Axl fat or ugly like they were talking about me. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. lol, itz ok fallen. i agree with what you are saying now. i do like a couple of their songs b/c they're catchy, but I think that they do try to use the whole theme of "death" and stuff too far. |

Good. Their music is no worse than a lot of the stuff out right now, but it's that image and fakeness that drives me crazy. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Charles Manson...now he had some basis for haunting writing... sorry, I love Charlie. He's, um, inspirational....no, not in a mass-murder kinda way... _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Right on. I know a girl who has a very...interesting story about a member of that band, but it's really more unmoderated forum material. *shrug* _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

ha very well-put, fallen (as always). lol "like, good charlotte is so totally punk! yea, hardcore!" pssh. eh i have several friends who can be considered posers, but they rock so it's ok. i think it's funny that evanescence is called a "goth" band and yet they are apparently also a "jesus" band. isn't a "goth" person someone who accepts the fact that death comes to everyone, so they dress in black and basically live their lives waiting for death? (or something along those lines. then again, i could be completely wrong). if that is the correct definition, it's kind of contradicting for them to be both goth and jesus. ah well let everyone else fall for their act (hehe "dram-skool dropouts") so they can cash in now and quickly fade away like all the rest of these fad pop bands.
hehe i agree with you chris, i think it's funny when people label themselves. i know people who will be like "i'm so punk!" or will dress a certain way one day and say "i'm gonna be emo today". i never really get that sort of thing. i mean, what exactly designates you as "emo" or "punk" or "goth"? i guess basically just clothes. we put waaaay too much of our time and concern into appearances these days. and yes, punk is not a fashion, it's more of a political and ethical statement. but most people don't realize that because they are too wrapped up in their hot topic outfits and simple plan/good charlotte albums _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

I just bought a kickass Guns n' Roses shirt on Ebay this afternoon. I'm soooo totally retro. <_<
As for Goth...uh...The subculture's basically about seeing the beauty in everything society views as dark/evil/ugly. Anti-society stuff. So yeah, death fits in there, but that's also the one teen angst kids focus on. The ones who think suicide and shit's cool. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Alex, whenever I read your comments, I 'hear' that dude in your avatar saying it. Gah can't think of his name for the life of me, David..something? From Kids In the Hall..ahhh...
Depression, suicide, and mental illnesses are trends nowadays. Sad, really. Takes away from those who really are that way. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

o i see... i don't know why i thought goth was specifically the "waiting for death" thing. someone told me that once... but yea i know most people just get into it because they're all into darkness and suicide and vampires or whatever. but i agree, chris, it is very sad that people exploit things like depression and suicide so much that they don't even seem like real problems anymore. o guess it shows how ignorant some people really are
lol it's Dave Foley!! yes, from kids in the hall as well as several movies. i LOVE that guy. funny, funny man. i figured it was about time to change my avatar since i hadn't changed it since i first joined this site. haha sorry it's been bothering you _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

So do I, and it's not that there are more teens emotionally disturbed, it's that it's "cool" to be suicidal and depressed. If all these angsty assholes weren't doing it, people would take the ones with real problems a hell of a lot more seriously. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Dave Foley! That's it! Awesome! It's not bothering me at all, I think it's amusing. heh. :D
I'd add more to the original topic, but it's depressing me and all the points I would've made have already been made. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

alright, i personally don't mind the lead singer's voice. but their actual musicians are mediocre, and the lyrics aren't anything that excite me. i listened to my friend sasha's cd of them [she's a *huge* fan], and i was thoroughly disappointed. some of the songs had pretty good intros...and then plummetted from there. and i agree with fallen's point- they *are* cashing in on the public's goth craze. that especially sickens me. |

Oh wow, if everyone read my posts in C.C.'s voice...that'd be hilarious! Chris is probably the only one who could, if he remembers. I doubt many others know what he sounds like, but it'd get on everyone's nerves fast. I'd die laughing.
Anyway, glad you agree. Death to the pseudo-goths. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
