I thought about putting this in the general discussion, but I decided that comics are sort of like books.
So I like to know what everybody's favourite comic is. So no manga, but things like from Marvel or DC or something like that.
My favourites are Vampirella and Lady death.
And I also like Elfquest.

The Sandman, without a doubt. Every time you understand it at one level, you realise that there's another one underneath waiting to be excavated. Hundreds of stories that connect with each other and with the central story, which is as simple or as complex as you make it.
But Asterix the Gaul comes a respectable second. Magnificent wordplay and bears up to reading as an adult. Vitalstatistix, Getafix, Cacophonix... puns at their best. Add on various amusing plots, unique pictures and the fact that you can get cheap copies at charity shops and you're laughing ^_^

I absolutely love Gaiman's The Sandman. There's a lot of symbolism, and it's so wonderfully abstract with the ideas at the same time. ^^; _________________

I still read Archie comics, actually. Call me childish and immature if you will, but in my mind they're a nice touch of wholesomeness in this dark, dreary world that we live in. _________________ |

I used to read X-men and Batman: DK when I was a kid. In college I loved the Preacher and Death series, and right now I'm really into Hellboy. Plus I love anything Art Speigelman puts out; I wrote my English thesis in postmodernism on Maus I & II, and I can't wait 'till Christmas, 'cause I think I'm getting In the Shadow of No Towers from my friend who works at Waldenbooks. Also on my wish list for X-mas is The Road to Perdition, and the graphic adaptation of Paul Auster's City of Glass, which I also read in college and loved. It was City Of Glass and Maus that really showed me for the first time that comics can be so much more than mere entertainment; that they're rapidly becoming an art of their own. That's one of the reasons why I'm so into Hellboy at the moment. |

I wouldn't really say JTHM is senseless violence if you got really into the series like me it was more about how the people in this world listen to everyone else but themselves (Hence the deamonic wall) But JTHM is right up there with Squee and Bear =D |

Yeah, Calvin and Hobbes rock out loud! I don't think I've ever laughed so much at a comic as I have at Calvin and Hobbes. _________________ |

Even though I cannot stand John Byrne for the most part, his run on "Namor" is still one of my favorites. I can reread those things over and over and not get tired of them.
I also like the 70's "The Invaders" and the old "Thor" from Marvel. Out of DC, I'm much more of a Silver Age fan than anything else, going for "The Atom", "Hawkman", and "The Brave and the Bold". And who doesn't love "Jimmy Oleson"? I always got a kick out of those!
More recently, my friend LM has been turning me on to "Justice League International". After she, and much of the TNT board, goaded me into buying "Formerly Known as the Justice League", I've been considering buying the comics to complete some huge holes in my collection. Try... most of it. XD

Asterix and Obelix (Asterix the gaul in English) wins this by a mile. Of course Donald Duck was always fun when I was little. |

Sirius and me are big fans of Lucifer, a spin off from the sandman series, the many themes and styles are very nice, and all the little stories and events about all the different characters make it very fascinating. It's about very large scale events, that go beyond this world, but it does feel like a struggle of humanity against unethical influences. |

I've been disappointed by Sandman spinoffs in the past, but maybe I'll try and catch that one then.
Hmm. I've enjoyed any comic versions of Pratchett works I can get my hands on (Guards, Guards is done very well), and I think we're long overdue for a Good Omens one.
And yeah, Maus is a masterpiece. Leaves you speechless.
It's a shame they're so expensive - makes it a bit of a risk buying random ones and hoping for the best, which I've often found is the best way to get into new things. I used to live near a massive library that had a decent selection, but now... nothing. |

mystique
exiles
uncanny xmen

generation x
i also love jhonen vasquez's jthm, squee, and i feel sick (though i can't find the second for that one). and i've been getting into sandman. i have both death comics (umm time of your life and the high cost of living) and i've been meaning to start the main series but whenever i go shopping i either can't find the first issue or i have no money. _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

JTHM is only seemingly "senseless violence" at first, but once you find out what's going on (what ties the whole series together) then it really doesn't fit into that category.
(usually the little pre-teen wiener goths look at the art style, the fact that their's blood and the hatred of cheerleaders and start postering themselves with all the merchandise and "OMG!!!!! I'm gonna marry Nny!!!" etc etc T.T;;; )
Anyway ^^ love the series. Jhonen has just an awesome sense of humor (seemingly large ego, though, through tapes)
I love the classics like X-men ^^ although once you get into the more modern stuff you feel more like watching PBS or something T.T;;;;;;;
Gotta love Calvin and Hobbes ^^ they're just awesome.
But I *love* "Get Fuzzy" ^^ high-larious.
I checked out Vampirella once but really didn't take to it.
Haven't looked into any comic-books that were published within the last decade though. Any recommendations? |

Within the last decade?
Hmmm. I doubt we'd share the same comic interests, but how about Marvel's 1997 run of "Heroes For Hire"? It wasn't exactly 'bwahaha' funny, but it had its own good humour moments. Granted though, the entire series was dependant on the fact that the reader had at least some knowledge of the cast beforehand. . .
"Daredevil" was pretty much good throughout the 90's, better towards the later end of it and then spiking down right at the millenium. The only storyline I'd avoid would be "Identity" or somesuch nonsense, only because it was much too involved and needed far too much brainpower than I'm willing to invest in a comic.
At DC, the "Final Night" storyline (it ran through many different comics) was fairly okay, and tied up the end of a rather interesting, though I wouldn't call it good run of "Green Lantern". If you like Hal Jordan, you might enjoy it, though not in any 'fun' way.
DC's Vertigo had a great run on "Animal Man" when it was written by Morrison. If you enjoy mind-bending storylines and mysteries within mysteries, go for it. Not to mention a cartoon wolf who "suffers for his world's sins" by coming into ours, then dieing and reforming over and over and over...
