I think this one could do well. Just list whom you think are/were the best/worst guitarists in the music industry. This includes the following guitars. Try to include people who are known, generally.

Electric guitar
Acoustic guitar
Electric bass
Acoustic bass

So, here's mine:

Best:
Jimi Hendrix(one of the best early metal artists. Yes, metal.)

Worst:(tie)
Avril Lavigne(Holy s**t is she bad)
Alanis Morisette(Just as bad as Avril. Uses the same amount of guitarists, too)

To clear things up, Jimi was metal, but a softer form of metal. It was the 60's, and when people were using whole huge bands, Jimi and The Experince used 3 people, and a guitar sound that revolutionized rock. In the Encyclopedia of Metal, he is listed.

Considering his style is still used in metal today, I think he deserves it.

BEST

Eddie Van Halen
Randy Rhoads

Both overrated as far as "OMG HE IS TEH BESTEST EVR!!!!!!!111two". But Randy brought classical training into what he played and was far more precise than most rock/metal guitarists. He gets the luck/curse of dying young, as everyone will always judge his work on what could have been. He was so good for so young, people project what he would have accomplished had he lived, which isn't really fair to compare what he might have done to what others actually did. So it's hard to say he's better than Eddie because he really didn't create anything amazing or overly memorable, just had the talent to do it (Mr. Crowley solo n' such not included, they're still not as remembered as Eddie's work).

And Eddie Van Halen because he's Eddie Van fuckin' Halen.

Obviously not judged on pure skill, as then the lesser known technical guitar gods would win, but I've never been impressed with basically a whole album of solo.

WORST:

Picking an actual guitarist, not a frontman playing to look cute (Avril playing is like Vince Neil playing and being drooled over by everyone in the first five rows while Mick solos)...

Probably any of the pop punk boys. Congratulations, you learned 3 power chords and can jump up n' down, yay. Or Joey Allen from Warrant. I like Warrant, but yeah.

For the best:

Tom Morello
Slash
Jimmy Page
Eddie Van Halen
Randy Rhoads
Joe Perry
Tim Commerford
Jaco Pastorius
Flea(RHCP)
Duff
Chi Cheng

For the worst:

That dude from Puddle of Mudd.

Mark Hoppus(blink-182's own bio says that they saw a concert, picked up instruments 2 days after, and decided to play)

Chad Kroeger- classic "nu metal" guitarist. Plays good verse and chorus, but couldn't play a solo to save his ass. At least in my opinion.

Slipknot's guitarist- Okay. The live performance was bad(masks? with that bad s**t?), studio isn't much better, and the dude's mask must f**k up his playing. It's bad.

I'm just going to say carlos santana, eric clapton and george harrison.

and I'm also going to say george bush and tony blair.

You can decide who is good at playing the guitar.

Ah, forgot Richie Sambora. Tend to forget I actually admire his playing aside from the utter pain most Bon Jovi music puts me in.

Dude, this all there is in this post? That's not right! But I'll give my opinion just to get things moving here again. Because we certainly cannot leave out the guitarists. They need love too.

The Best

Slash (Do I really need to say anything about him? He's a god. Okay, to be more clear, his lightning fast riffs and chords are genius. You don't really hear bands play like that anymore if anyone ever did play like Slash.)

Eddie Van Halen (to put it in fallen's words, its because he's Eddie Van f*ckin' Halen. Why do you think he smiles so much? Laughing )

Jimi Hendrix (first person to take a guitar and show the world how it should be played. Of course he needs to be mentioned here a few times. Who knows where rock and metal would be without him?)

Joe Perry (Hey, Steve Tyler isn't the only one holding that band up. Why do you think Aerosmith is still around today? Well, actually I don't know if anyone will ever figure that out but I'm sure it has to do with Joe Perry's excellent skills in some way.)

The Worst

Avril Laviene (she actually plays the guitar?! My God, I thought she was just using crappy recordings or something. Y'know, something that most artists today do so I thought she was no different...just crappier sounding than the rest. Her music sounds lip-synched or something like that.)

Most "punk" guitarists (you know, the ones who are around a lot like GC who don't know jack sh*t about real guitar playing.)

I'm so surprised that there aren't more people posting here. Hmmm...I wonder if I start a "Who's the best frontman thread" then would that get more replies? Is there something like that on here? I'm gonna go check for that now.

Oh oh, Best and worst in one

C.C. DeVille (Poison) - While he has got some undeniable skills in that cocaine scrambled system of his, and has a great sense of melody, he's sloppy and very much an 80s cliche player. Often out of tune, not even plugged in back in the old days (don't do cocaine, kids), but when he's clean and into it, he kills.

But he's my favorite for purely being him. He wrote some of the most memorable riffs of the decade (and the lyrics to almost all the hits) and one of the best ballad solos of all time (Life Goes On), admitted as such by people who can't stand him or the band.

So "Best" because he really is very talented, but "worst" because he's high off his ass half the time, sloppy, and stays almost entirely in the pop-punk hair metal genre.

I thought Poison's best ballad was "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." But I haven't listened to much of Poison lately so I probably wouldn't know.

Yep! Thats right, don't do drugs. Axl did that and look where he is and look where the rest of his band is now. (Sorry to use him as an example but he's the first one that comes to my mind when I think of getting high 'n such.) I think maybe Steve Tyler did drugs too and almost screwed up Aerosmith, right? It just happens. Its a part of rock.

And to keep this on topic, I'd like to say once again that Slash is a guitar god. No questions asked.

Well their most famous ballad is Every Rose, and it has a good solo as well, but the solo from Life Goes On is more widely acclaimed for his playing ability. The entire song isn't as well known 'cause it's a bit...cheesy, but then again Poison did very little that wasn't. Razz Even the video for Life Goes On is...dated, shall we say.

Axl didn't do that many drugs, he's just completely insane. Very Happy Not to the level Duff drank or Steven shot up at least. He was on happy pills for awhile, but in his own words, all that did was keep people off his back 'cause "he's on meds Surprised ". It's more his ego and power trips (and change of direction with the orchestra n' whatnot) that were the last straw. Of course he partied it up as much as anyone else, though.

Steve did a boat load of coke (they all did). Remember the story of them being supplied coke by the label so they could do the album? Or recording in the old mansion, and Steve locking himself upstairs with coke and a gun, shooting stuff? Good times, good times... Rolling eyes

It's just that in C.C.'s case, unlike Aerosmith or Gn'R where the drugs didn't hurt (and in some cases helped) their music much, C.C.'s playing gets dramatically worse when he's high. Summer before last, after he'd been clean for years, he kept falling off the stage and playing drastically out of tune and missing notes. Sad And this summer, though he managed to stay upright and play decently, he was still on something. Really sad. Lots of stuff I could say about him getting in fights and dragged out of the Catclub and Rainbow, but it's not related to his playing.

I wouldn't mind so much, but he's still my favorite not only for his playing, but just for being him, and it's sad to read about.

Mmm, well I figured I'd just put in my word on this. Since you guys haven't really mentioned anybody from the 90's.

Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains)... suprised he wasn't on this list
James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) At least in the first 2 ablums the guitar work was phenomenal
Jim Martin (Faith no more)
Mike McCready (pearl jam, temple of dog, and I think he was in mother love bone too) Why isn't this guy on the list folks. He kicks some serious ass too. Even though pearl jam blows now....

I don't really have a crap guitar list.

I think the best bassist I've heard lately is I think his name is Mike Dirnt or something from Green Day, He does an awesome solo in "Welcome to Paradise" that goes on quite awhile and he's playing so fast. I want to be that good some day.....But I never will.

I'm gonna tell you right now, if Jaco Pastorius was alive and could take on Dirnt, Dirnt would be buried in the dust.
Duff
Tim Commerford
John Paul Jones
Flea
They're all noticably better than Dirnt.
But, uh, I guess he's one of the better newer talents.
Uses a custom Fender '59 Precision Bass with modern P-Bass pickup. Not a bad deal.
