Sorta. There's two distinctions, though.
"Pop" as in "pop culture" means popular.
"Pop" the music genre isn't only "popular". Actually there's two distinctions of that, too. The genre is Britney Spears, Boybands, bubblegum, highly electronic and sugar coated music, appealing to mostly teens and characterized by the light tone of the instruments (including vocals). No heavy drums, guitar, bass, etc.
The style "pop" is in almost all genres. The catchy melodies are pop, from Motley Crue to Aerosmith to a lot of rap songs. Just because something has a pop style, doesn't make it the pop genre.
Yeah, like it matters, everyone knew what you meant. Just felt like distinguishing between them. Especially when people bash a band for coming out with a lighter song and calling them "pop" (genre) just because it has a lot of the pop style characteristics. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. i dunno, i sorta always thought that "pop" was incorrectly used as its own genre. the pop you refered to (britney, boybands etc) is what i consider as "hip hop," "r&b," etc. then again, i too sometimes just refer to it as pop, just for the simplistic sake. anyways, yeah there's a thread on it, so knock yourself out!

I always considered hip hop and r&b the more..."musical" rap. Rhythm and blues and all that. Britney and boy bands aren't that. They're very pop, the catchy melody (half the time barely played my real instruments) and nothing else. It's an actual genre, just a poorly named one, since it's also a style that isn't exclusive to the genre. But I guess the pop genre is popular, so... _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Pop changed. In the fifties and early sixties, it was about rebellion, but then it became about conformity with Britney, NSYNC and the like. That said, I do enjoy some of the old pop like The Lovin Spoonful, The Beach Boys and any of those girl groups from the fifties/early sixties.
Today pop just sucks... it's so fake. _________________ |

I like pop-rock. Like Avril Lavigne style. It's nice because there are in some point of a song the heavy drums, and all that.
And yes, I have to say Pop did 'change.' It went from the top of the chart to the bottom. Songs now are Brittney Spears, and all that crap. (Sorry!)
Back than, there was the more relaxing, more alive pop music. Does anybody get what I'm saying? I don't even get what I'm saying myself... |
