No you're not.
Goth (as it's commonly used) is a subculture from the early 80s based on similar interests in style, literature, and music (NOT the likes of Marilyn Manson). It was not based on satan, dark powers, or vampire obsessions. Overall it was a peaceful and accepting culture. It's not a religion, race, or cult.
"Goth" is also the germanic people who invaded Rome. And a style of architecture. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
I am ever so proud that my ancestors contributed to the fall of the Roman emprire
Yeah, it's a great thing to be proud of.
I don't get why people make such a big deal about "omg I'm so gawth", when they aren't anything of the sort. All they've got is a big black wardrobe and some black hair dye. They can't name a single book or artist that is "gothic". It wasn't even about being cool. It was sharing interests, thus "subculture". If you want to look stupid in a bunch of black Hot Topic clothes and spiked wristbands, have fun, but don't attach yourself to something you know nothing about. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. People label themselves to avoid conformity, but when you label yourself "goth", "punk", "mod", "hippie" or whatever, you're really just conforming to what your idea of that particular subculture is. _________________ |

I dunno, she was talking about sacrificing a lamb earlier as a gift for her friend. Maybe there's something more to this whole "goth" thing.

They won't listen to you. I don't bother. In their minds, they're cool shit. It's just a sad attempt by suburban brats to make themselves seem more interesting than their white bread little lives are, by acting depressed and wearing a pound of black makeup. It's stupid. Even more stupid when they use a term like "goth" without bothering to know what it is. "omg I luv death! I'm so goth! I cut myself, teehee!"
Ugh. At best, you can ignore them. It's just a cry for attention, and giving it to them won't help. They'll just think "u dun't understand me! Why don't u just stop judging me for what I am!!!!!"

You wish. Those are Brits from the 60s who were against rock. Try again. At most I have an unhealthy interest in the sunset strip "culture", but I hardly tease my hair to the sky and wear leopard print spandex everyday. I like the tunes, attitude, people, and yes the style, but I don't change who I am to conform to it completely. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. well, that was a bad example, nate. You CAN be half gay, it's called being bisexual. Part of your inner being has the taste for (your same sex), and the other side prefers the other sex. That, my friend, was a bad explaination comming from me! _________________ <MARQUEE>

But technically you're not half gay, since "gay" refers to liking people of the same gender period. You're 100% bisexual. Especially since "bisexual" gets into different preferences of liking people of the same gender more but having a slight preference for the opposite, or any other combination. It's not always 50/50. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

your 100% right
ppl won't listin to me any ways, ppl don't give me a chance (ok lets not go there again <_< )
I have to atleast save one of my friends who is this goth like duddet, she wears black eyeliner every day, and tries to use mine some times (I don't wear eye liner, it makes me look like the devils wife) yeah so she's kinda a lost person as you say that these ppl have gothic claims just for taking them as "I cut my self, I'm dark."
So yeah I can atleast save her from the stupid gothic munkeys
those sad, depressing people are considered punks. If you walk into hot topic, you'll find several mini good charlotts walking around. Almost all of them look bored enough to kill. If they would like to call themselves "Punk'd", that's fine, I'll just step outta that creep trap. They actually get angry when the oh so clueless preppy peepoles ask "are you goth?" or call them one. It's always "fu** no! I'm punk'd you fu**ing dumb@$$!"...or they're starting a new label: "goth" for a new generation? maybe they're trying to add another definition to "goth"???
 I dunno, but that's how it pretty much is, here! _________________ <MARQUEE>

"Punk" is the same as goth, only funnier. I don't really even want to get into it, but people were getting it wrong right from the beginning (like 70s beginning). The point was to wear whatever you wanted, not copy those who were already doing it. But anti-fashion became fashion, and it still drives some of the "founders" crazy. It's the same thing. Taking a subculture's style, what they think it means, and running around trying to be a part of it. Which like I said about goths, you wanna rip up your clothes and safety pin them back together, all the power to ya, but it's still not "punk".
I have no problem whatsoever with people dressing in those styles. Some of them do look really cool. It's the attitude and motivation behind it, of trying to make yourself "cool" by pretending to be a part of something you have no idea about. If someone is truly into the literature and music and culture, not just the clothes, that are associated with "goth", great, enjoy yourself, but those people almost never bother proclaiming their mighty gothness. It's just who they are and what they like. Punk is harder, thus I won't get into it. But the short version is it's physically impossible to be punk in 2004/5.
Just annoying. Their lives, they can be sad little sheep if they want. But most don't care. You can try to enlighten them, but they just want the attention. I love some of the "goth" bands (Bauhaus for example, but they're a slightly mainstream version), but it doesn't mean I'll dye my hair black and write bad poetry about death and crimson blood. :P
(EDIT: if anyone wants the punk explanation, I'll do it, but since it's not the topic at hand, I wasn't going to...) _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

You're you, and that's who you should be. I'm not trying to say people can't spike their hair and wear all black (hell, I wear all black mostly). It's the attitude. If you really like Bauhaus and gothic literature, great. Go with that. You can't be a punk for a variety of reasons, but that's not to say you can't still agree with a lot of what it was. Just...don't make yourself a part of something that doesn't exist anymore.
It'd be like me trying to say I was a glam rocker. It doesn't exist. It's mostly porn shops and drug dealers on the Sunset Strip these days. There's no bands handing out flyers and people hanging on the streets all night. The scene is almost entirely gone. No matter how glammy I dressed, it still wouldn't be true. I may like the music and the people and what it stood for, but I can't recreate it, and I was in diapers when it was at its peak.
Just like what you like and don't label it. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Indeed, I have all the answers. Come, young grasshopper, and I will teach you the secret of trendwhores and bandwagon jumpers. When you can snatch the guitar pick from my hand...
No really, I just get really tired of people giving cool things a bad reputation. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

It sounds like Katie is in some sort of mid-life crisis? "Who the hell am I then?" Listen hon, you're like 13, right? I'm the one who should be worrying about my midlife crisis, not you. |
