Okay, almost everyone has heard of this musical somewhere but I wanna know who has actually heard the songs from it or even better, who has actually seen it? (The musical or the movie, doesn't make a difference.) Let's see who'll join in this discussion.
Just to start a topic, I have never seen the musical. I've only heard it on tape and read the script in my 7th grade music class and I absolutely loved it. When have any of you found out about it? _________________ Vaccum cleaners may look fun, but are deadly sex toys. as are certain vegetables like, terri schiavo -Powtaz |

i saw it... um last year or the year before. i forget. but yea it's very good. mostly i like it for the music. andrew loyd webber always has wonderful scores. the story was interesting too. i'm looking forward to the new movie, it appears they did a good job with it.
it was so awesome because in the theatre they had the chandeleir (sp?) on the ceiling, and then when the play began it fell from the ceiling to the stage. kinda scar though since we were sitting right beneath it.
as for when i found out about it... um don't know specifically. it's a classic play, really, been around for so long, so i think i just knew about it. i know my parents had seen it when i was young (we have a phantom mug), so they probably told me about it. _________________ i fought the war, but the war won |

Lol! I know that feeling. When we were listening to it in class that scene actually made me jump out of my desk. It was because the Overture began so suddenly and my music teacher put the stereos in his room on full blast and I think one of them was right next to my desk. But I still love the Overture. I bought the soundtrack (the movie soundtrack) on Sunday and I absolutely love it. Its good to hear that music again (its been like three years since I last heard it.)
I really want to see the play someday. Its a little dream of mine to see it in the theater but I'll be lucky if I can buy tickets. If I start saving now I should be able to buy tickets for me and my parents in about...*begins to count to myself*...I think about by the time I'm a Senior in highschool I should be able to afford to go. ^^;

Dude, you're so lucky! What was the movie like? Was it true to the actual musical. I read a review about it and one critic actually said it sucked becasue "it seemed like all the actors did was sing." Well ain't that just a big DUH?! Its a musical! Of course there's gonna be singing. *Sigh* Critics in general can be very stupid asses most of the time. <_< One more thing, how the hell did you manage to see the play three times? I mean...damn thats a lot of times. Lol!

Hmm. I read the book (Gaston Leroux) before seeing the musical, and that was a few years ago now. God knows when I first heard of it.
I've seen it performed once, at Southampton.
The score's a good one to play, at least on the piano. I tend to bring that one out when I want to impress people
aving said that, there are some weaker songs, and it's not my favourite of the West End musicals... but it is very good and well worth seeing. It's also more friendly to people who aren't very familiar with musicals - a good one to start with
The film is on my to-see list.

I was wondering if there was a book before the musical. It was driving me crazy when I bought the soundtrack. I would love to read to the book though. Its such a good story. A sad story, but a good one nonetheless. ^_^
GAH! Okay, has anyone ever turned on the Overture on full volume (but forgot the volume was so loud?) Probably not, right? I just did that a few seconds ago and that Overture will always make me jump out of my seat. Great muisc but if you're not prepared for it then it just might make you jump...or is that just me? <_< Lol!
I'm actually considering singing one Christine's parts for Try Outs for the school musical. I'm not sure which one to sing though. The only ones I know well enough that I actually can remember the lyrics are "All I Ask of You" and "Think of Me." I'm not sure which might be easier to learn in about a month maybe earlier. My voice is a high soprano like Christine's but I'm not sure I can reach some of the higher notes. ^^; Think anyone might be able to help me choose? Lol!

I like 'Think of Me' best, but if you can't hit the highest notes it'll ruin the song.
If you're in doubt about your voice on the day, I'd recommend 'All I Ask of You' - you can get away with changing key if you absolutely have to.
Think of Me, on the other hand, relies on the high notes - without them, there's no song.
So practice hitting those notes and see what your voice is capable of Good luck :)
Incidentally, I just saw the film. It's... awesome. They really took advantage of the fact that the camera could move so much around the opera house, the effects were spot on and the casting was almost perfect (the man playing Raoul was the only downer), and the music was, as always, magnificent. |

I own the Broadway musical and listened to it all the time, so I was very excited when the movie came out. it was just incredible. I had the chance to see the play last summer, I think it was but never went. I still relaly wnat to see it.
Comparing the music between the musical and the movie though is relaly interesting. I was surprised by how closely they stuck with the old musical. I think only one song was missing, 'Twisted in Every Way'?
It isn't really fair to comapre them, though, I think. Both were amazing, but one has actors truly acting in the songs, giving them a bit more shape, and the other has more attention to the detail in the style of the singing. I don't like the voices of Raoul or the Phantom as much in the musical as in the movie because of that. In the old version, the Phantom sounded a lot younger and sort of prissy- in this was he's much more ominous.
Over all, though, I just love both versions and I can't wait until I have money to see a stage version ^_^
I reviewed the movie under the Tv/Movies section here: http://www.fanart-central.net/forums/index...?showtopic=6102
Edit: Oh, I also love singing the pieces! I've done the Overture thing, too, lol. I had it as a noise on my recycle bin once o.o and emptied it-- "DUUUUH! DUH DUH DUH DUH DUUUUH!" That was fun.
Now that I have my own car, I get in my singing practice going from place to place. I must say, though, if my school were doing the play, I would not rest until i got the Phantom's part My favorite song is the last one when all three are singing and overlapping songs from throughout. Very stunning ^_^ |

Geez, this is really making me want to see the movie now in the worst possible way...but sadly I'm broke and can't go anywhere for at least two weeks. (Damn Midterms... <_< )
Thank you so much Rebus for the advice! It really helped me out actually. I spent a lot of time practicing "All I Ask of You" and its okay. Its hard switching from the roles of Christine and Raoul though so it didn't work the way I wanted it to. Then I thought that "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" would be perfect 'cuz its over-the-top but not too over-the-top, y'know? So I tried singing it at my singing lessons today but that song won't work either all because
1. I have trouble with singing the beginning. Singing low like that is weird to me and I have trouble getting over it.
2. I can't remember the damn words. <_<
Actually, I forgot the words to a lot of the songs. I couldn't even recall the first lyrics to "Music of the Night" (a possibility that I would've loved to have done but since I was nervous about remembering the lyrics and trying to sing over the radio that was playing the song as well and I just crashed and burned.) So it was concluded that "Music of the Night" was too much of a man's song for me to sing. I'm a little dissapointed but I'll find something for the musical try outs. My mom suggested something from Jesus Christ: Superstar so I'll try it out. Trying to find your voice sucks, that and getting over nerves. If I could just stop getting nervous then maybe I could sing songs from The Phantom good. Oh well, there's always another try out next year. ^_^

I love that part too! And what about when Christine sings that one part "God give me the strength to show you that you're not alone." I always feel like crying when I listen to it on the movie soundtrack. Its so sad. Do you know what Christine did after she said that? I cannot for the life of me remember what it was. But then again, I haven't really seen (or in my case, read about) the musical in almost three years.

How long will the audition be? Do you actually have to do a whole song, or just an extract?

Wow. You must be making a fortune in royalties from the film then |

LMFAO! I doubt thats what she meant. But then again, maybe she does own it. Isn't it extremely hard to own a copy of the musical? My drama club went to to Boadway last year on a trip and one guy's camera actually was destroyed by two security guards 'cuz he went into the theater with it and they were afraid he took pictures of the show. Real shame too, it had some pictures from the Metropolitian too. <_< Well, if Chelsea owns the actual musical then first let me say that its just an honor to even talk to you and *whispers* any chance you can get me and Rebus tickets? C'mon! We're your friends. I'm sure you could pull a few strings, right? ;)

I'm not entirely sure on that one. I'm hearing different stories from everyone. In fact, the only definite thing I know is that I have to sing in a music room in front of only the music teacher and drama teacher and maybe this one friend of mine just because he may play the piano if we think that may help. I'm not giving up on the Phantom though. I'm sure that if I keep practicing my high notes and get over my nerves then I can pull it off. I'm not looking for a huge part. Just a little part will do, y'know? ^_^

Nah, most of the West End (that's Broadway to you ) musicals have soundtracks out, and lots of them have DVD/VHS versions of the stage show. Quality varies a lot though...
But yeah, they are hot on people they think are pirating musicals, and I have to say I agree with them... it's theft. Full stop. I really hate being in a theatre and seeing flashes go off... it's blatently breaking rules which is an insult to the performers. If I ever own a theatre anyone taking pictures will be chucked out into the street there and then.
I'm not giving up on the Phantom though.
Good. And it's nice that you don't have to audition in front of loads of people |

Well, I had never heard of the Phantom of the Opera until 6th grade when we played it in band. I loved it and played it all the time, but I never knew it was actually a play until a few years later when my step-dad gave me the cds. They had belonged to his mom, so they're pretty old- as far as cds go So it is actually one of the only cds I have that isn't stolen |

I love Phantom! I first heard the music...ages ago, can't remember how old I was. I saw it once on stage when it came to Pittsburgh (never was lucky enough to see it in Toronto) and it was incredible. In the very beginning they had the Chandelier on stage for the auction, and when the overture started it rose up off the stage and started swinging wildly and flashing. It was really cool. I did "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" for a midterm once, too. I have the original Broadway score on my computer, but sadly the beginning of Mascarade is jumpy. I guess the disk was scratched when I ripped it. That's my favorite part, too.
I can't wait to see the movie, I tried to but it was sold out and that was the only time I could see it. I'm in a class about musicals though, and when I asked my professor if we could take a field trip to the movie he said it was a good idea and he'd see about getting money for it. One of my textbooks is 'The complete Phantom of the Opera.' |

Isn't it though? Really, all we needed was the text of the play, but that was all he could find. Turns out the book that came with the CD would work, but since I'd already bought my books I'm just keeping it. I'm really hoping he gets the money to go see the play, it would be awesome if the school paid for us to see it. |
