Okay, I just bought a Bon Jovi album over the weekend. There was no reason behind buying this except for the fact that they were an 80s metal band and it was under $10. I have no real opinion on them as of yet. I listened to it a bit. It sounds like they have synthesizers in the backround of their songs and it kind of annoys me but thats about it.

By the way, the album I got was "Slippery When Wet" if that should matter if that was a good album of their's or a bad one.

So, what do you all think about them?

You've seriously never heard Jovi songs? They're everywhere. Or were.

You Give Love a Bad Name, Runaway, Livin' On a Prayer, Wanted Dead Or Alive...

I don't care for them. Love Richie Sambora (guitarist), but that's about it. Jon has always irritated me, more in these past few years when he chopped off his hair and keeps trying to deny he was ever in a "hair band". Look like an Armani model all you want, but don't deny what you were, especially when you helped define the big name league of hair metal. Grr!

Their music is so-so. For what it's worth, Slippery is their best. But without going through every song and their entire history, I just don't like them. For a variety of reasons.

I've heard Livin' On a Prayer once with my dad when he tried introducing me to Bon Jovi two months ago but I was more interested in the Guns 'n Roses songs that he had downloaded to his computer. Actually, I think it was around then that I really began to love GnR as much as I do now. Guess I just wasn't meant to be a - Bon Jovi fan. Rolling eyes

Their hair intimidates me. Its so damn huge! Surprised I'm trying to find at least one attractive guy in the group 'cuz I just expect guys in a hair metal band to be hot but from the two pictures on the CD, I can say that 'cept for maybe the lead singer, I don't see any really attractive guys (but I'm comparing them to Axl, Izzy, and Slash so I guess that might not be fair. Razz )

So far I like the CD. Some of the tunes annoy me a bit. It sounds synthesized and ever since I heard Europe's "Final Countdown" I have been annoyed by all songs with a synthesizer ever since.

I probably should've gotten Def Lepord...

Jon (singer) is the typical pretty boy. Richie is the only one in the band I ever remotely cared for, in looks, personality, or musicianship.

Their music is very....produced. One of the reasons they were so huge. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but like you said, some of it gets very annoying. I know there was a lot of criticism towards Def Lep for being overproduced, but I think it was Joe Elliot who said something along the lines of "Why put it out if everything isn't perfect?". In Bon Jovi's case, I just don't feel it. I like Dep Lep a bit better.

Their songs are fun enough, and a couple make great karaoke (You Give Love a Bad Name Very Happy ), but I rarely listen to them.

Their hair wasn't that big, compared to some others. It was on the bigger end of the spectrum, but far from the extreme.

Jim Gillette was pretty huge.

Jorge DeSaint, second from the left, (aside from being beautiful) had more hair on his head than most bands combined. It got bigger after that early photo. Longer, thicker, higher...and so pretty. Jovi would be jealous. Razz

First of all I'd like to point out that Bon Jovi isn't a "metal" band. You can call it rock, pop/rock or pop, but it sure as hell ain't metal.

Now if you want a good cd to get to know Bon joiv you should buy Crossroads. It's a best-of cd and has got all the famous songs on there. You could also go for One wild night which is a live cd with all the bog-ones on there.

I disagree that Slippery when wet is the best album. For me it's Keep the faith due to the great guitarwork in there, and These days for lyrics and song totals.

Wrong, they were. They changed styles. Now it's rock, used to be metal.

The first song they released as a single was Runaway. Not a quite a metal song.

Mama I'm Comin' Home isn't a typical metal song either.

It's hair metal. No hair metal band was a "metal" band, but the unofficial genre is still called "hair metal". Alternate name for "hair band". Fuckin' duh. Rolling eyes

Funny the topic turned this way. Laughing I got into the exact same discussion today with someone in my art class. He told me that the official name for "hair metal" is "speed metal." Funny, I can't imagine calling Def Lepord or Bon Jovi "speed metal."

 Tell him he's a dumbfuck. Speed metal is brain liquifying music that goes a million miles an hour with just neverending...speed.

Hair metal is hair bands is glam metal is glam rock is glam bands is butt rock is cock rock is whatever other name you want to slap on it.

I'm rather fond of "Butt rock", only because it's so stupid. And screams "jealous".

Cock rock is another favorite.

But hair metal is the nice easy distinction for that era. Glam rock, as well, but is easily confused with the 70s glam scene.

Wow...so the Slash guy was wrong again. <_< I shouldn't be surprised. He gets his facts mixed up and the fact that I lose myself and agree with everything he says when I'm around him doesn't help. Its weird, he doesn't seem to have any hair metal CDs either. Just a lot of Radiohead, Pixies, um...Jethro Hall was something we listened to a lot today of his CDs. No one liked my music. <_<

No one wanted to listen to Guns 'n Roses. Sad And thats supposed to be the cool art class.

Oooh! Sounds kinky. Wink

Bon Jovi are the epitome of "butt rock". Pretty frontman, songs like "Livin' On a Prayer", loved by millions of girls (the male population of Jovi fans here is oustandingly high compared to almost anywhere else  )...

"Cock rock" is more often reserved for the bands that are heavy and hard rock enough to be liked by both guys and chicks, but they still look glam, thus "gay". Only a slightly nicer term than butt rock. Razz

And all the others are the same thing. Glam rock is the closest you can get to accurate, since they really weren't metal, but the 70s were bigger for true glam rock (Bowie and such). Hair metal/glam metal has the metal in it because they used the electric guitar and big riffs and some of the best hard rock singers...

Genres overlap too much, anyway. Who cares, they were still another fluffy haired band with spandex, no matter what they call themselves (Mr. Jon "we weren't a hair band" Bon Jovi <_< ).
