Read this story. Tell me if it doesn't amaze you:
"Two boys ages 9 and 10 in Ocala, Fla., have been arrested and charged with a second-degree felony for making primitive pencil-and-crayon stick figure drawings on scrap paper that depicted a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, reports The Associated Press. Police took the children, who are special education students, out of school in handcuffs.
The official charge: Making a written threat to kill or harm another person. The two have been suspended from their elementary school. One of the drawings showed the two boys standing on either side of the other boy and "holding knives pointed through" his body, AP says of the police report. They identified each person in the drawing with written names or initials.
A second drawing showed a stick figure hanging with tears falling from his eyes and the other two stick figures standing below him. In addition, other pieces of paper had misspelled profanities and the initials of the boy they were allegedly threatening. The boy who was depicted as the victim saw the drawings and told his teacher, who confiscated the sketches and informed the school's dean. The dean then called police, who consulted with the State Attorney's office before making the arrest. AP reports that the boys' parents said they thought the children should be punished by the school and families and not the legal system."
I think this is a huge over-reaction! I drew violent pictures in school, I think almost every boy did at one point or another. These kids were 10 YEARS OLD. That does not warrent an arrest due to threats of violence. People these days are so obsessed with school violence and national security and all that other bullshit that they have begun to throw common sense right out the window. <_<

Wow. That's insane. Y'know, instead of arresting them they could've at least called a school counselor and all that mumbo jumbo. There's some sort of psychological thing I remember reading about kids who drew that kinda stuff--the very last thing they need is to be arrested. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

While i don't think they needed to officially arrest them. I don't have a problem with the police taking them down to the station and showing them what happens to people who make threats or hurt people like they depicted in their drawings. A way to scare them and little and show them that's it's not fun and games or cool. But to cuff them and the whole deal, is a bit much to me.
I never drew any kind of drawings like that. I drew sharks and things, but they were part of my deep sea drawings i always did. I never drew anything violent really or threatening to any one as a child. I never knew any one who did who didn't get suspended, swear like a sailor, and bully kids on the playground in 2nd grade Kind of funny now that i think of those kids, cause for the most part, they're all locked up or working in factories or so i'm told
But yeah, there's more to the story than what you posted there Will. Don't know if you read anymore on it but it was on CNN yesterday morning. My favorite, Jack, was talking about it. They showed all the pictures and told the full story from what they knew yesterday. I'm sure there are a few more pieces today, but yeah. The two boys who drew the drawings, were bullies and had been targeting the little boy (the one shown being stabbed, hung etc) for awhile and the boys family has been complaining about it. And they have on record many times, the little boy telling his teachers about it or the school nurse, etc. They two boys would push him around, call him names, make small playground threats (we all know them, heard them, expierenced them, gave them out or what not, the normal little kid crap) And he saw the drawings and told his teacher, crying, because he thought they were going to kill him now.
They had been pretty cruel to the little kid. So considering the whole story and not just the bits and pieces, although i don't think they needed to cuff them or prosecute them or anythng. I don't have problem with them taking them down to the station again, having a talk, showing them what happens to people that hurt people. etc. Scare them a little and talk some damn sense into them, their parents never bothered to do.

I remember when I was in first grade I always would watch the discovery channel so I drew a story book about this leopard and in the picture story he was killing and eating a wildabeast or w/e then u saw like the bloody bones and flys around it because it was in the sun. Just like stuff like that. EVERY child has drawn something like that at least once, this country needs to stop being so paranoid and take that stick out of its ass. I suggest counseling or how ever you spell that. _________________ I'm just a simple MEGGY MAE. |

I used to draw stuff like that all the time. Last year I made a stick figure drawing of myself shooting Heather Mills with the caption: "I killed Heather Mills. I am now Mairi McCartney. And I don't have to worry about her or her stupid fake leg getting in the way." but my friend said I should throw it away because it was creepy.
Whatever. _________________ |

Hmmm, interesting, Lasher. I had not heard that part. I still think that cuffing them and taking them down town was an overreaction. Let the school administration deal with this, not the police. _________________

I read this article a few days ago and I was shocked. First of all, this isn't the police force's problem. Its the school administration and parents' problem and they are the ones who should discipline them. For God's sake, they're ten years old. They have trouble comprehending such strong subjects like death and murder. Every kid goes through this and almost every kid does get taught that such violent drawings against people are wrong. These kids were just caught in something that was taken way out of proportion. _________________ Vaccum cleaners may look fun, but are deadly sex toys. as are certain vegetables like, terri schiavo -Powtaz |

For both Matt.... ...For both...Aww....You  me? Thanks...Okay well back on topic I still thinks it's alittle dumb for doing that to 10-year old kids.... _________________ "Don't Worry, Just Because I Don't Talk to You, Doesn't mean I Hate You!"

While i agree it was extreme to cuff them and now they're being charged for it (which i don't agree with again) I don't agree the drawings are normal.
I have serious anger issues, and when i was little i never drew pictures of seriously hurting anyone. The most i ever did was hit someone if they pissed me off and usually it was the stupid boy who tried bullying people, and always got his ass kicked by me when he tried it with me.
If you all think it's "normal" or "okay" for little kids to be drawing pictures, then in my own opinion, y'all need to talk to a pyschologist or something. Cause anyone who knows human behavior will tell you that that's a sign of trouble to come and potential, serios problems with violence and dealing with emotions if kids are drawing killing, stabbing, hanging someone. Especially a small boy who has no violence in his pass and they were beating up on in the first place <_<
There's a big difference between not liking someone, and drawing things like that. Kids don't communicate or think like adults do, they don't know how to describe strong emotions like adults or communicate them well. That's why people in pysch departments us drawing for therapy and diagnosing kids, because that's the best and most effective way to determine a child's thoughts, emotions, intentions andsuch.
Am i saying they were going to kill the little boy necessarily. No. But those drawings are not things to be taken lightly. Those kinds of things should set off sirens and red flashing lights as far as i'm concerned. And they are infact a huge sign for what is to come if they aren't taught differently and don't get help. |

I agree with Lasher.. but still I agree with Will in the fact that the handcuffs and removing them from the school in a flashy car (That they probably enjoyed) was far too much.. Getting them help is the key phrase here, not "Remove them and punish them for human emotion"
Maybe I'm off track but my point is in there somewhere.. |

Haha, off topic, i almost wrote out a rejection message from doing the AP later
Any how, Gray, honey, i said i didn't agree with the cuffing and all But yeah, the police thing was fine by me but in the extreme way they did it. Now if they were in middle school, yeah, then i'd understand them taking them off in the cop car and cuffs but by then, you understand how serious it is making drawings like that about your class mates. So yeah. But the way i see it, them being brought down to the police station, will probably (hopefully) scare them out of doing anything stupid like that again. |
