Got your attention, eh?
Allow me to explain. Those are the terms my high-school art teacher used when describing how you lay out the paper/canvas, etc. when you start working on a new art. They have the same meaning in art as their more well-known photographic counterparts: Portrait, and Landscape.
So as my art teacher used the terms, "hamburger" meant to orient the surface vertically, more tall than wide, and "hot dog" was to orient the surface horizontally, wider than long.
That is the question for this thread. When you draw, paint, etc., how do you orient the drawing surface -- horizontally or vertically? Which one do you prefer, which one really works for your style, and why.
Myself, I'm sort of the "hot dog" type. Maybe it's because it matches the orientation of monitors and TV's. I don't know. Maybe it's because when I first opened up the sketchbook (a top-bound one) I turned it sideways so that the binding would be on the right. It's sort of become a habit, so I can't really pinpoint why. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

XD at first the topic description confused me "Which do you use" and all I could think was "use" a hamburger/hotdog? don't you "eat" those. o.O
But then I read what you wrote and it all became clear.
I guess I would use the hambuger style XD _________________

I'm a hotdog style most of the time, but if I mess up one end or the other too much I flip it over and do it hamburger style so that the end's don't show through when I take a picture of it with my web camera. I SWEAR I HATE MY CAMERA I WANT TO SMASH IT TO BITS!!!

Usually hamburger. But hotdog if I'm only using a small part of a big piece of paper. |

Hamburger almost all of the time. I have like two drawings that I did hot dog style, and that's only because the picture wouldn't have fit on the paper if I did it hamburger style. _________________ |

It doesn't matter, which way the paper is oriented, horizontal or vetical, makes no difference. What DOES make a difference is where the binding is. I MUST have the binding on the left side. Always. So if it is a side-opening, I'm all set. If the pad opens vertiaclly, I turn it so that the binding is on the left rather than the top. Dunno why, I do it almost subconciously. _________________

Depends on the picture. Typically portrait (sorry, I can't stand the "hamburger/hotdog" terms). If the picture doesn't make a difference, like it it's more or less contained in a square, then portrait. Usually because I work on my bed, thus it's easier to hold on my lap that way.
And the only time I care about the binding is it can't be on the right. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

On the tablets I used for college they were horizontal and the binding was to the top. if I wanted to use the paper verticaly Id pull it out of the tablet. I dont like a binding to the left or right. I feel a restriction. I only use 8 1/2 x 11 basicly now. I have a small tablet with top clip and cover that swings to the back when open. makes a nice drawing surface and I use one of them to show prints to prospective buyers and others. So to get back to the question, I guess Im a vertical paper drawer mainly, but it really depends on the subject, and if the subject becomes larger than 8 1/2 x 11, I piece sheets together. I do most of my work on the computer, so I need the small size to scan. Ill then piece and resize in PSP them together and finnish any lining in Paint, with a grey pencil.

I can't stand for the binding to be on the right or the bottom. Screws up the pic. If I'm planning on a wide drawing, or something that would look best hotdog style, then that's how it goes. But for the most part I much prefer hamburger. Now with food.... hotdog. Seriously, the binding SHOULD be on the left. |
