The site isn't that bad. I have a few fics on there myself. Mostly the same ones I have on here. I like to read alot of the fics and stories on the site and most of the ones I've read are really good....some sucked too, but still they tried. A few of mine suck too so I really can't complain. Anyway the site isn't evil....you're just so evil the site couldn't allow what you put on there. |
the very aquashed format
What "squashed" format? Can you explain?
Anyway, I remember quoting a few portions from FF.net's rules before the FAC server hiccup the other day, but baiscally, FF.net doesn't like songfics. Songfics aren't explicitly on the "not allowed" list, but they don't like 'em. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
The site isn't that bad.
Oh yes it is.
Fanfiction.net
~ As with any site that grows in popularity without any way of controlling submissions, there's an overwhelming amount of crap submitted there every day that buries any story worth reading. Some people say "well that just makes finding the really good ones all the better". No it doesn't. I don't want to skim over fifty stories with the grammar, spelling, and writing skill of a 10-year-old to find one halfway decent story.
~ Those same people that submit bad excuses for "fanfiction" run rampant with "WOW!!!!! SO K00LIES!!!!!!111two" comments. Even those who can review without the caps lock and 20 exclamation points rarely say more than "cool" or "I like it". Yeah, there are some people that give thoughful reviews, and everyone likes praise, but who needs 35 "Oh noes! POOR JIM BOB!" responses?
~ There's a horrible amount of writers who take fanfiction below the level of even part time hobby. I don't expect everyone to have the skill of a pro writer, but come on. No one wants to read the script you came up with while watching Futurama and drinking Mountain Dew. No one. Usually anything that mentions "sugar high", "hyper", or any brand of soda in the description is destined to be crap, because it all means the same thing "I got this idea and wrote it down really fast without even really trying 'cause it sounded like a good idea at the time."
~ They got rid of the real people section. Or should I say, some of the real people section. They left a couple "reality"-type television shows that are still about real people, for whatever reason. A bit hypocritical, not to mention stupid. They shouldn't have had a real person section to begin with if they didn't want to deal with it. It's not fair to have hundreds/thousands of stories up then delete them all just because they didn't think ahead. There are plenty of other sites with real person fiction doing just fine.
~ The whole NC17 issue was beyond ridiculous. I was mildly annoyed when they changed it so R and NC17 weren't automatically on the list. Fine, no problem, I just changed the rating of mine to PG13 (it was for language, no big deal). However, that proves my point. Banning NC17 work doesn't get rid of it, it just makes people post it as R (or in a lot of cases lower). What's worse? A kid purposefully clicking on a clearly labeled NC17 story or a kid that clicked on a G rated story to find out it's porn? Anyone bitching about little kids seeing NC17 stories needs to pull their head out of their ass and realize little kids are not innocent angels. If they want to see something, they'll see it. And if you catch Timmy reading an NC17 story, it's not because he was so innocent and those big bad website admins forced it at him. The little brat chose NC17 from the dropdown menu and purposefully read a story. But of course he'll claim innocence. Some of the best stories on that site were deleted because they happened to contain a few racy scenes that warranted an NC17 rating.
From my post in this thread.
And songfics suck. No one even reads the lyrics anyway. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Let me guess, you mean the kind like MS Word 8.5x11" sheet with 1" margins, double-spaced lines and 0.5" indents? The format that schools always tell you you want to do? If so, there's your problem :P
Me, if I write a ten page chapter it still looks like ten pages when uploaded to FF.Net or FAC. I use 10pt, single-spaced, wrapped to fit the screen.... _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

So I guess this means I am now the most hated person in this forum because I posted my opinion about how I felt when ff.net took down my "Ducky Boy" songfic which was on that site for months and it didn't have any problems with it in the first place If that's so then I'm sorry I'll just ask the web master/mistress of fanart central to remove me so that I'll never cause any evil in here ever again _________________ Do not disturb me because I already am. |

No, you're jumping to conclusions. Nobody likes for bad things to happen to their stuff. All we can do is offer sympathy and guestimate at why it happened that way. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

and uh, how do you know we hate you? I've seen a whole lot worse. you're actually a lot better then a bunch of other people I know *cough* Zerohour *cough* So, unless you can read minds, how do you know we hate you? I mean, if the people on the other forum hated you because of one single topic that you posted your opinions on, that forum is serioulsy wacked. No one here hates you because you said the way you felt. Heck, I've done that a million times (and made quite a few enemies) but I'm still here, so those people better watch out. |

since you're so dead set on it, let me tell you this. We were all little newbies once, and there was always people walking all over us. The difference was those who kept going despit alot of annoyinh people higher up then them, or those who gave up and never went into this forum again cause they were convinced the others hated them. We aren't corrupt idiots who love power and step on everyone lower then us. Some of us do, but if you let that 5% get to you, then you seriously need to sort out your priorities. Anyway, since either way you seem to choose not to believe me cause you think that you're right and I'm wrong. Let me say this, I've been here longer and I know what it's like to be inferior to everyone, but giving up is a waste of time. |

Myself, I say three things. As much as we can be harsh to newbies, I'm sick of newbies being so apologetic about it, assuming that just because something doesn't go their way, it's automatically something they did. That's jumping to premature conclusions. Same thing for the people who say "I'm leaving because I think I'm causing you guys trouble". It's happened before, it wasn't true then, it's not true now.
If you really want to leave, stop the melodrama about how you're going to be leaving so soon. Like they say, you know where to find the door. Posting and participating and talking about how much you really want to leave, only proves that you are actually not prepared to leave.
Seems as if you're acting this way just because FF.net removed one of your stories and we're not jumping on the "let's all torch FF.net" bandwagon so easily. That's not a good enough reason for leaving -- but hey, your decision, why should we judge?
Next time you want to leave, just leave for awhile. No warning, no melodrama, just ignore the site for a week or so, then check back afterwards. Like they say around Tillamook, "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes". Take some time off when you need to, it'll give you a better perspective on things.
