Why Do We Need Comments?

I see a lot of people wanting comments. But I wonder

why do we need them?

Any thoughts?

-positive reinforcement
-knowing our hard work is being appreciated
-suggestions for improvement
-to lift one's own self-esteem and appreciation of their own artistic ability

yeah, but still i am kind of tired of the little whinners who want comments and they aren't getting any. If you look back through my posted I did a "self promotion" thing thinking it was one of those "critque" things.

Comments are inportant. Why? WHY! Why do you post pics? Do you wnat to know if Other members like it or not? Thats why.

Comments aren't that important to me, I rarely cheak too see if I have any. I like recieveing them as much as the next person but it's just not a priority.

It's nice when you work hard on somethng for someone to appreciate it. Most people have the good taste not to beg for comments, but I don't think there are many people who don't like getting them.

When it comes to the really important pieces we create, whether pictures or writing, it starts to become hard to show people. They're too personal, and you start to feel that when people respond to them, they're actually responding to you.

So to get that one voice of praise is a relief, to know that someone has seen and appreciated what you have to say.

I can't say I've posted anything like that here, but I suspect better and braver artists have. I hope they got positive responses.

But yeah I agree with a lot of ya that commented.

Comments weither it be on our pictures or our board sometimes annoy me. (The age old agruement) I really don't like the flames but even more I don't like the "wow that's really good" "Nice pic" "Here's a doughnut. *shoves it down your throat" comments.

I kind of wish a lot more people would give more "informational' comments. You know?

Any other thoughts?

I just saw one of Cara's comments when I was going to comment on a recent picture. My first thing I said? "Don't mind the donuts".

Some people are friendly, some are less so. Then there are some people who "[b]try[/b]" to be friendly. IMHO, those are the worse.

"Copy and paste" comments. Sheesh... Cara left a baker's dozen of them, all essentially the same "Awesome, here have a donut *shoves a donut down your throat* " with less variation than the topology of Kansas. She has just earned a dubious distinction of me removing ALL of her comments from my pictures.

I value comments and feedback as much as the next artist, but it has to be [b]honest[/b] feedback. Doesn't have to be a full-blown critique, doesn't have to win any Pulitzers for writing, all it needs to be is honest. If she had only given the donut comment on one or two of my drawings I would've let it slide. But to see that mess of sugar and glaze smeared thoughtlessly across literally my last 3 weeks of uploads . . .

Hard to believe that most who've responded to her actually thank her for the donuts. She has over 100 comments on her profile, and I can count on one hand the number of people (including me) who've said, seriously, that they don't like the donut treatment.
