I've read Hitchhiker's Guide, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and I've been reading Life the Universe and Everything. Haven't had time to finish it, though with school and everything. I've got two or three more books before I'm finished my gargantuan Hitchhiker's Guide anthology. How is it against god and what does it matter? I have all five books(in a compilation), and I agree, it was a bit against God, but its a funny book.

Yep. I've read nearly everything Douglas Adams wrote, which sadly isn't that long a list He died way, way too young.
If you're enjoying the Hitchhiker's books I'd suggest you buy, borrow or steal a tape of the original radio series. That the way the whole idea started, and they're excellent.
Douglas Adams was a fairly fierce atheist, but I wouldn't say his books were 'against God'. I think his expressed most of his religous sentiments in amusing enough ways to make it clear he was being light-hearted.
As for the film... I'm a little apprehensive that it'll be geared too strongly toward the Americans, and miss the point that that Arthur Dent is funny because he's so amusingly English. But they've got Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin, so it'll be worth seeing just for that I also hope they keep the animations of the guide exactly the same as the original TV series... they were really great, and they're cult images now. It just wouldn't be the same with 3d displays or other such malarky. |

I love the trilogy, have all five in a 'leather' bound compilation, gilt edges and all. Read them last year for the first time. Alan Rickman as Marvin? Yeah, I'll buy that. That'd be cool. When's this movie coming out? And yeah, if they Americanize it they'll ruin it.

Yeah, I doubt the movie will be as great as the original show. Bad bad casting of the characters. Except maybe Alan Rickman  _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

Well it's a joint USA/UK production, so it's not just being made in America. I expect there'll be a fair number of American accents in - but even the original had those (or, when budgets were limited, the British imitations).
Simon Jones' accent is absolutely marvellous, but I think Martin Freeman'll do a decent job. He does 'flustered' pretty well, and he does look very Arthur Dent-ish. And let's face it, they can't possibly do worse for Trillian than Sandra Dickinson (that was the tv series. Susan Sheridan in the radio series was brilliant).
I was a bit more concerned about the cultural jokes and quirks. Obviously the tea obsession, but also the crappy local pub, the way Islington crops up throughtout the series, and in fact most of Arthur's personality. In a similar vein, I hope they keep the 1980's atmosphere, complete with digital watches and space yuppies
I can't wait |

Hardly. If anything it puts god in a good light. A very lighthearted view, and one that I enjoy. ^_^ _________________

Oooh!!! Has anyone read "Last Chance To See" by him?! I love that book *_*
I read Hitchhiker's, the Dirk Gently books, etc. They had good moments and lots of good quotes...but they were a bit on the crazy side for my sense of humor XD. That's why I especially love "Last Chance To See" since it's a true story and a bit more grounded in reality XD XD
They're making a movie of it? O_O I didn't even know! |

I SO love HHG.. It's great... Or.. should I say. .Froody...
It taught me the importance of towels.. *tear*
..It's so great.. I can't really say what I like about it. .I love Douglas Adams. .He could write anything and his dry british wit and sarcasm would make it LEGENDARY!! *eyes gleam with love and respect*..
Kill-O-zaps: The wave of the future..
"Pretend I'm holding a very deadly kill-o-zap gun.."
VOGONS: Founders of the bloody-awful poet society..
Oh. The danger glasses.. "They turn black when something dangerous is about to happen so you can't see it and panic!"
Beast of Trayyl. "You can't see me, I can't see you"..

It's humorous at best, and plenty of witty comparisons/characters. Plus it has a lot of irony and relations to the real world. You might have to think pretty hard about some parts of it though, but overall it's a pretty decent book.
They're making a movie of it too. :3 |
