The compression thread in the art help forum got me to thinking about this~. What size / filesize do you normally save your finished pictures at?
I personally work at huge canvas sizes when I CG (several thousand by several thousand pixels)...but then normally shrink them down to at most 750 pixels height or 800 pixels width. Which I still think might be too large...I'm not sure though. And then I save as .jpg with around a 150kb filesize~.
Hmmm...I know FAC has a 300kb filesize rule. I think that's a bit too large for the average picture, though. But that might have something to do with my super slow evil modem T_T. *kills her insanely slow internet connection* |

Me? I don't CG. I use what paper I have at my disposal, which has included:
- Half-sheets of paper (about 4x6")
- Full sheets of paper (8x10.5" and 8.5x11")
- 9x12" sketchbook
I also have an 11x14 sketchbook, although I've yet to draw anything that BIG (and it wouldn't fit in my scanner, either...)
I always scan my drawings in at 150px/in (dpi), since that's the scanner utility's default setting. This results in an image approximately 1700x1200. From there, I crop it and then resize to about 60 or 75 dpi (depending on how much I cropped it -- I always start out with the paper in landscape orientation, but depending on what I'm drawing, sometimes the way I crop it makes it look vertically oriented) for display and uploading. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

When i cg, i work with huge sizes too.. 3200 sumthin pixels.. x__x its tiring, and when it comes to shrinking, i have no idea what to do, i dunno..um, you shrink them down to 750? will try that.. i shrink them down to *600 rarely*450, 400 or 380 and save.. because i think the smaller the picture is, the better it will be..i mean it looks better, and yea i save most of my files as .jpg
I dont always cg, i use watercolors sometimes, and other stuff too..and uh i use size A4 and A3 watercolor pad..and stuff. |

When I CG I usually work between 2000 and 1500 pixels but resize to 1000 pixels if I can't fit it in FAC.
I generally work on 8" by 11" sheets of paper and, now that I have them, use Copic markers insanely. |

I try to make my pic 1/2 the size they were scanned, but I end up saving them to fit the screen.(about 500x800 or something.) |

I used to do that too... before auto-resize was implemented and we had the 600/650 rule, I would crop/tighten/resize my pics to try to fit 600 wide on the dot (sometimes a smidge over, and yeah, sometimes they would be rejected for size).
That was, until I started stating the resolution of my pics in their descriptions, which made it a pain to try and calculate what the scale of a 600px image was... then I decided to just keep the resolution at a nice even figure when I scale it down (150 -> 75 -> 60 -> 50), and simply not care about what the pixel dimensions would result as. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I do what a lot of people here have said: work on a large picture and then size it down dramatically once it's finished. Doing it that way helps hide any mistakes and makes the picture look crisper. |

I work on the usual 8 and 1/2 by 11 inch paper, and nine by twelve paper. On the computer,I work around 2000 something by 3000 something pixels.I've started using smaller sizes, due to my slow computer. When resizing,JPEG w/image compression around six,and resize to 1000 something by 800 something or something like that. |

I only draw on printer paper (8x11) or my sketchpad (9x12). When I CG however, I always make the image 20x20 inches. Sorry, I dun know how many pixels that is. Then when I'm done, I downgrade it to a 450 to 500 pixel square. If the pic calls for additional cropping, I'll do that last.
I always make sure to resize before I submit anything. My pics tend to be between 1-3 megs before I shrink them. O_O |

I normally make Gradient Paintings and CellShaded pictures in approx 3000px up to max. 4500 px and Paintings are 5000 px up to.. well definitely HUGE sizes.. all in all done in 300 dpi resolutions, imagine how long a pic takes me to load.. *sigh*
It's quite a pity that the big paintings loose a lot of detail when I shrink them for the web formats, but well there is no real solution for this... though I could add detail shots _________________ - hmm... did someone say "MUFFIN"? - |

Hmm... well my sketchbook is 11x14, I actually prefer that to the smaller sketchbooks I use to use. As far as CGing, if I'm doing a picture from scratch I begin at about 1600x1600, and always end up shrinking and cropping to something substantially smaller. |

I always draw on 8.5x11 paper, then scan it in.
When I colour digitally, I shrink the picture to only 600 pixels tall!
Or 500 pixels, if the drawing was longer horizontally.
That's the size I work with it at, and that's the size the finished version is at.
Then I save it at around 10 or 11 level quality in Photoshop, which USUALLY results in a picture around 150-250 kb. But that depends on how busy the picture is. A simpler one may be less than even 100 kb. _________________ Taku Bell: My Art and Games

I never really pay attention to pixel height/width, to be totally honest. I usually just size it down to 25% of whatever it's scanned in as. :/
For paper, I always use either 8 1/2 x 11 or 9 x 12 paper.
though a lot of my drawings (especially those from last year) are rather small, and only take up about half the sheet of paper. I'll just crop 'em when I scan.
I never use CG, though, unless you count MSPaint drawings. 8D _________________ FAC |

Sadly, I don't know how to make CGIs. I only use paper. 9"x12" or 12"x24", then I put margins on them. _________________ --Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas. For the purpose of posting my drawings on the internet, I shrink them to 500 pixels in height and the width is automatically determined using the "preserve aspect ratio" option in FastStone Image Viewer.
When I draw, I use lined paper for the rough draft and 8.5" X 11" printer paper for the good copy. |

I mostly use A3 (29,7 x 42 cm), because I can draw much more details on this size than on the common A4 (21 x 29,7 cm). |
