I browsed an article in Official Playstation Magazine regarding the "revolutionary" PSP.
And I lay down a challenge:
Is the PSP revolutionary, or merely 'evolutionary' ?
Does it truly innovate, or does it just 'renovate' ? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

The PSP may not be Next-gen consloe wise, but it is a revolution handheld wise. If only they could fix the button.
Oh and sorry to beat a dead horse but...*BEAT!* |

Amen to that.
And Rita, I'm NOT rich. I just got a lot of cash for christmas, and I saved some of my money beforehand. |
The PSP may not be Next-gen consloe wise, but it is a revolution handheld wise.
Solid argument.
Although, on the other hand, I'd say that the Nintendo DS is more innovative, both on the handheld/portable realm, and forconsole gaming as a whole.
Every feature of the PSP, taken by itself, has been around for awhile in gaming:
Disc-based media - Sega CD was the first to use a disc drive
Multimedia uses (games, music, etc.) - PSX could play games and CD's
Backlit color LCD display - Sega GameGear, Atari Lynx
Wireless gaming capability - Nokia's N-Gage beat 'em to it
Short battery life (relatively speaking) - Sega GameGear, etc.
Whereas the DS has its different mix of features, many of which have been around for awhile in gaming but some are completely new
Dual screens - first time in any game system (VR setups, like Nintendo's ill-fated "Virtual Boy" don't count because the two screens were used stereoscopically, to create a single image)
Touch pad - first time in any gaming system
Stereo speakers - Well, headphone setups have always been stereo speakers, right?
Built-in mic - First time in a gaming system
Wireless capability - Nothing new, although they say that some games will allow players to join in even if they don't have the game themselves -- wirelessly downloading the game from another DS. Kinda like the GBA's ability to play some games multiplayer off of just one cartridge, only taking the idea to the "next level".
I might argue that the PSP doesn't bring any new features to the world of consoles or handhelds alone (like ya said, it is only the combination of them that is new) . Although, does the PSP's combination of features bring in new innovation, new ideas? Any new surprises (beyond the button problems -- which btw are still only about 0.1% of an occurence) ? Or are they basically taking the same code for existing games and 'porting' it to a new console?
Speaking in terms of basic architecture & game design ("industry" innovation), the PSP is no different from the PS2, XBox, GameCube, PC and laptop -- in other words, just a different combination of hardware input/output capabilities, a different set of machine instructions. The actual games are still coded, still designed, the same way they've always been coded and designed. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

yes, and they only put a LITTLE of each in, so technically speaking, stick with your PS2, X-box, etc. |

Addict
Reserves? What reserves? Me, it'll be at least a month before I can even afford to think about the possibility of maybe getting a new handheld.... _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

This article (specifically, the illustration in it) was too good to pass up:

PSP's been out for six months. Who has one? Who likes theirs? Who expected more? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
