*slams head against desk* Dude.....I just got off of fanart and I swear EVERYTHING had to do something with goths, dark something, death, or other stuff. All the pics were "my dark something," or "this is my character, she's a goth," or "he's a goth as you can see," or "I drew this person, but I drew them into a goth."
Honestly, I always thought everyone was unique, and YES there are those who ARE goth. But then you get all those wannabes who feel like it's the coolest thing and you have to be goth, and you have to rebel against society and all this crap, when really, they don't, and they really aren't unique anymore....they're just wannabes like I said above.
Now I have to admit, I've done a dark angel pic or two, but it's not like my whole section is nothing but.
And I'm sorry, because I've been ranting, but I would honestly like to know what other people think about this whole thing... -mew ^^

We're talking about this on a thread in the "Unmoderated" section, if you want to go there. First off, I don't believe that there is a such thing as "goth". What do people consider to make you goth?
-Music about dying, killing, blah blah blah
-Black Clothes
-Self Mutilation
-Being 'unique'
Those seem to be what most 'goths' have to be like. Now, look around you.... how many kids are working their asses off to fit in that little group? So much for being unique. Not only that, but they're playing up fake mental illnesses and such. It's all BS. I remember when very few people drew 'gothic' Characters on this site. I think one of the first ones to was HorusGoddess. Lots of these kiddies liked it and decided to do it, too. We had the whole 'prep' thing, then the 'punk' thing, now we have the 'goth' thing. Oh, and before those, there was the grundge thing. Yeah... that's basically how it goes. I just laugh at the people who flip out trying to keep up with the trends because they don't really know a thing about themselves. All they know is what people in their trend are supposed to like. You kids want to be unique? Why don't you try being yourselves. |

Kate you are SO right.
I hate how everybody tries to be goth. I wear black a lot, but I'm no goth. To me being goth is a state of mind. It's not about how you look or act around other people. It's about how you act on your own and when it really matters. People who try to be "punk" or "goth" or try to be something else, I catogorize them in one catagory. They're POSERS! Be yourself, don't pose as anyone or anything else. |

See, I don't use the word poser really because... well, everyone uses that word now. You have 'punk' kids calling the 'goth' kids posers and visa versa. I just say that they're trying to fit into a neat little package society has made, where they have to act and dress a certain way and listen to certain music, that sort of thing. Basically, I call them fake. I don't believe that you can be punk, goth, or any of that, even if it has to do with the way you think. People have too many different thoughts to totally fit into one thing. I mean, we're people, right... we're always changing physically, emotionally, and mentally. Tell me, do you have any friends that you've known for many years that are EXACTLY the same? Probably not, right? |

Yeah I guess your right. Truthfully I don't even think about it that much. I live life day by day. And I tackle things when they first come up. |

Thank you.....
You guys pretty much said what I mean.
That's how it is as school, more than half are people who are trying to be others.....like Mindy, I wear the black clothes and stuff, but it doesn't make me goth, despite what some of the jerks at school say. Honestly though, I don't always wear my black clothes all the time, everythign just depends on my mood, I do what I feel and that's that.
And Kate, thank you for bringing up the thing with Horusgoddess, because I did want to mention it, when one person does someting, they all seem too.
And I'll go check out the unmoderated section, thanks...

Mmm, I'll have to disagree in there being no "Goth". It's an architecture style (der, I know not the point) and a very real subculture. However, it's not a subculture of 14-year-olds. There's certain common fashions, but not to the point kids take it. And "gothic" music does not include Good Charlotte. Though it is impossible to define the culture exactly.
I love this quote: "Many people lead unhappy, unachieved lives. And that's sad. Goth makes depression and angst a lifestyle choice, and that's art."
Actually, as horribly stupid and teenybopper as most websites out there are, there are some good ones. THIS ONE is cool and, while it does include parts about youth, is more general. S'where that quote's from, too.
It used to be a really cool subculture. Just like the hippy, punk, and metal subcultures used to be cool. Now they're "cool" fashions. Unfortunate, but if you can find someone who's not a woe-is-me (pre)teen, cool folks to talk to.
All my thoughts on the trend are in the other thread.

God this is the funniest thing I ever heard. it used to be (growing up in a north east jersey city) that if you didnt act bad you were terrorized. I used to protect the little kids that couldnt do it for themselves. all the sudden you dont conform and you wear old black clothes listen to Alice Cooper and your considered someone that loves the dead. it aint sooo. people like to self mutulate like Kate said and act like the worlds coming to an end. come on that went out in the 60s and I was young then! this whole lable goth is silly. someone thought it must have sounded cool and gave it a name.
I would really hope people arent as "goth" as they say. I was considered what goth is now...then. I wasnt! I just didnt conform and helped some little kids make it to adults. I listened to some really sad music but that wasnt all I listened too.
I guess what Im getting at is lables are stupid and dont be like sheep and follow. be yourself and if nobody likes it their loss.
this has just been an opinion...not that of this or any other site
kinda sounded like the end of an old cigerette commercial _________________ 'It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first.' - Ronald Reagan |

I think the youth of today just needs to get their own damn trend instead of going back and trying to fake what happened twenty years ago. Wait...the trend would be everyone dressed as Britney and Eminem (moreso than now)...nevermind. Go back to trying to be Sid Vicious, even though most kids would say "who?".
And that's brilliant! From now on I'm dressing as Alice Cooper. Well, how he used to look, not the pink sweater playing golf. Eh, everyone would just think I was a big fan of that little Good Charlotte kid that ripped him off. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. I don't know if you were talking to me, but I know it's a type of architecture. This girls just posting about kids calling their art 'goth'. Did you notice how they say it in the comments? It's happening way too often now.
Oh, one more thing. I know they have different fashions, and they like to give them names, like vintage... I just dislike it when someone goes "I'm Goth!" or something along those lines. |

Nah, not specifically to you, Kate, just sayin' that there is (or used to be) a real subculture and not a bunch of kids runnin' around.
And there's nothing wrong with C.C.! Except his slightly sloppy guitar work and love of the whammy bar, but besides that... I'll change it eventually, I swear. And maybe I will put on Alice's makeup. Hmmmm.... And if not, it probably will be Axl again. Was gonna make an animated one of him sometime. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. What i think is really dumb is when punk wannabees wear something that says 'punk' on it. Sure, some other wannabee is gonna go, oh, that's so cool n stuff, but a 'real' punk would label you as a poser. O.o I've seen this fluffy choker thingie with 'punk' written on it in fake diamonds. I almost died... |

I'd have to say it's the "mystique" behind the whole gothic thing. A lot of kids fresh into junior high see people dressed in black or wearing chains or whatever and think, "Wow, I've never seen that before! They look so mysterious! I wonder what they do in their spare time!" and all that crap. So they emulate (or try to, at least) that look and atmosphere.
Personally, all the people I know who are the commonly accepted definition of "gothic" are the cheeriest and happiest people at school. Go figure. |

ah yes how we love "titles"...
goth(/punk) is so overated today.
I cant go out to the mall wearing black cause people will start to think "ohhh so gothic... such a poser", yeah so what im a poser? Just because I like to wear black sometimes that doesnt mean im goth!!! Im not even trying to pose as a goth, I just LIKE TO WEAR BLACK! and a few chains (1-3).
...and most goths scare me. Stupid I know, but they do. Probably cause most of them are ...are.. hyper and happy?

Hm, maybe cause they aren't goths? XD And don't worry about all black clothes as being a statement of "goth". My whole wardrobe is basically black and white. XD Man, put that with my hair and people start thinking all this weird stuff. Heh, certainly is amusing to hear it tho. They say my expression looks as though I'm about to kill someone or something. _________________ I hate you. That's all. |

*bangs head against the wall* Gotta love people with selective reading... And I ain't even gonna bother anymore, so ya know what? We're talking about everyone who wears all black (myself included), has a single piercing, is ever unhappy, and has ever so much as walked past a Hot Topic. They're all posers and should drop dead. <_< _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
