I've noticed that pictures with not-so-great scanning, like this one, are getting accepted by the Approval Panel. Is that supposed to happen, or are the rules for scanning a little lose?

I'm not calling you an idiot, and I semi agree with you, but you can't call people who draw on lined paper lazy, when you yourself can't capitalize I's!

Sunny, no, we aren't supposed to approve bad scans. Thing is, that's not really a bad scan. You can clearly see the picture and everything, it's not overly large... basically, the only problem is the little edges. It's perfectly fine and there's no reason to reject something like that. We can get rid of really bad scans, but we're not going to be totally anal about everything.

And toako, who can't capitalize their "i"s ? You didn't say who, and it came out of no where. Maybe me? *shrugs* we may never know, oh well.

Whoever scanned that should have cropped off the edges, but its nothing serious enough to reject it for, the picture itsself is fine.

Yeah, but it's no big deal. As long as it fits on the screen and is viewable, it should be approved really. The only time something should be rejected for something like that, if it's just a forth the size of a page, and you can see all the blank area around it, etc etc.

I'm all for the rules and doing it right, but i don't want to go nazi style and everythiong set in stone to where if it's a mm off, your shouted at and rejected time and time again until perfection is met. Thats how i see it any how.

About drawing on lined paper...
I personally just use line paper for designing/planning/practicing, but I always do final drafts on printer paper. Actually, before the site crashed I submitted all sorts of crap, but after it died I read the announcement on the site and I suddenly decided to only submit my best stuff (all shaded, most colored, and NO LINES).
About quick sketch...
I'm personally against it. What's the point in submitting anything that's not completely finished? It's better to take the quick sketch that you "did so well" and redo it on a blank paper.

About lined paper: most drawings on lined paper are doodles. Even if they aren't, they're still usually black and white, done in pencil or ink. When you scan a picture in grayscale, oftentimes the blue of the lines won't register, and the picture will be smaller anyway. So, use grayscale.

I personally see no reason to practically forbid stuff on lined paper: as long as it doesn't make up like, 90% of someone's gallery, I think it should be allowed. Maybe I'm biased, because I love sketches - you can see a lot of emotion and action in sketches that often dies on the way to it's final draft.

And I tried what you said: it doesn't work on my computer - the lines show up in grayscale. You're talking about non-photo blue, and I doubt that they would print notebooks like that.

Anyways, here's just my two-cents on the lined paper thing: again, *never* the majority of the gallery. However, I think it should be allowed, because for some of us (me being one of them), I can't always keep a trace or recopy true to the original (whatever was drawn on the first paper). Often a lot of my stuff loses a lot of its action etc. whenever I ink it in (even the final CGed stuff). *shrug*

So that's my two cents. I think quality control is a good thing, but having a "zero-tolerance" for lined paper art is ridiculious. *shrug*

I agree that sketches can be great, but a public gallery site is really no place for them. If people wish to show off their sketches, they should make their own site on a free server and link it in their profile or in picture descriptions or something. Sketches just end up pushing high quality finished work down the list faster.

A sketch every now and then in a person's gallery is fine, but the problem you run into is kids who only draw on lined paper and claim lack of effort as a "sketch". I call it crap. A sketch, while quick and messy, should generally still have a decent amount of effort and skills put into it. A giant lumpy head, short arms, and mismatched eyes is not what I consider a "sketch" worth showing, and it's only made worse being on lined paper.

The biggest problem with allowing sketches is you end up with a flood of them like on DA. It encourages kids to upload every sketch they do. Really, it comes back down to "you should show only your best work, because don't you want other people to think only the best about your work?" (got that from my Humanities teacher about applying for college, but it still applies). In my opinion, a public gallery site you share with other users should be a place for your very best. Sketches and doodles can be shared elsewhere on your own space where it's not hurting anyone else's work and where people who enjoy sketches can look at them.

Oh, and the "as long as it doesn't make up most of someone's gallery" isn't really practical. You either allow it or you don't (for the most part). Otherwise it's very subjective and left to "well, you already have 85% sketches, so you can't upload anymore" or "the limit is 7 sketches." stuff like that.

I never said let anyone upload ridiculious amounts of sketches. I was thinking around 3 or less something.

Just a thought here. If I came off annoyed, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.

I dont know how to say this without sounding rude.

lined paper drawings should all be rejected even with a great amount of effort or talent they distact from the art itself. just say no

as for sketches. I post them infrequently just to show how I go about things and write right on the comment that its getting pulled by myself. I do not look for comments on them. its just to show my art style.

yes finnished products do not show some of the raw effort put into your work, but layouts and sketches should be pulled by the artist themselves or by FAC to keep the site a higher quality.

and yes this is fanart and except for a few request made of myself, I do not draw fanart as of late (Lara Croft years ago). I think that is a great bend of the rules right there that I appreciate. if that was to change I would have to except it. there are rules in life.

the rules your setting down here and now are fair to all artists showing thier tallents to a larger community and everyone should except them.

proper cropping, lined paper, doodles do not belong here.
just an opinion.

Nono, I had no problem with your opinion. Just sayin' what I thought. Not tryin' to come off as some elitist bastard or anything. The problem with limits on lined paper is where to say enough is enough. It would take forever to regulate such things without completely coding something that required people to check off a "lined paper" box and if it wasn't checked, it would be rejected, and if they already had three in their gallery, the approval panel could see that. A lot of work. Without a feature like that, the staff would have to go through a user's entire gallery checking for lined paper.

I was on the main site, the approval queue was zero, and next to it said "Good job (or work, I can't remember) approval team". Not sure why I'm pointing this out, you probably already know it's there, oh well. But yes, it's a good job you guys are doing. ^_^ And for free WTF?
