Could this site possible allow people to send in images bigger that 300K? I have paintings and drawings of mine that are no bigger that a piece of computer paper and it won't let me upload them due to the fact that they are "too big". I just feel that 300K is kinda small. If anyone can help me find out a way to make my pictures reach 300K it would be so helpful! I already cropped the pictures and I already tried sizing them down on paint. The picture sizes I have right now are 360K and another one is 1332K. So could ya please help me out? |

The problem is not the image size, it's that you're saving the image in the wrong format. Use the dropdown list on the "Save" dialog box to convert your image to JPEG or GIF format, and that should solve your problems. ^_^
BMP's require approximately 1.0MB for every 640x480 of image size. JPEG's and GIF's are highly compressed and can generally achieve the same size in less than 100kb, let alone the 300kb limit. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

300k is a very limit. If you are using a correct file format and reasonable image dimensions, you should not be exceeding this limit. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |

I guess I'll just have to draw really small because I already have it on jpeg and for some reason it's still too big. Thanks anyways. |

You can't be serious... What are the pixel dimensions of that image and how large is the file?
Even at a pixel size of 800x600, a JPEG should be no more than 150kb, let alone 300kb.

No, but I'm pretty sure that their image is not saved as a JPG. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

The image is 348 Kb and the size of the image is 1204 X 1436. Don't get all upset at me if i'm doing anything wrong okay? I don't know computers as much as some people do. Truly. |

1204x1436 is huge! What's your screen's resolution setting? Mine is 1024x768, and that's the larger of the two standard screen resolutions (the other being 800x600). An image like yours would more than fill my entire page. How big do the site's other images appear to you? If your screen's resolution is 1600x1200 for example, then that's probably why your image appears small. Do you know how to change screen resolution? _________________ |

Holy... :o
Let's see, I have many scanned JPEG's myself that measure in the 1500x1200 range (that's what happens at 150 dpi ), they weigh in at an average of 200kb apiece, although the more complex ones do total more than 300kb (one of them is 700kb).
A good rule of thumb for you to try is sizing them at about the 800x600 range. I don't know what kind of screen resolution you run on but most of us are on 800x600 screen resolutions, so you really don't need to have a drawing much larger than that.
Also, review your JPEG compression options. You can probably tweak the quality setting down a few notches to increase compression without losing much in the way of detail. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Nope. I do not know how to change my screen resolution. Could you please tell me how to do that or something? By the way, thanks for all of your concern about my problem. ^_^ |

To change your screen resolution:
- Right-click on your desktop and select "Properties". (Or go to Control Panel > Desktop).
- Find the tab that says "Settings", there should be a slider there that you can use to adjust your screen resolution up or down. It will also say what the current screen resolution is. What is it? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

That's not too bad, it's only a step up from 800x600... of course it does mean that images will appear a bit smaller than they do at 800x600 because of the extra resolution....
But anyway, if you size your JPEG's to fit in the 600~800 wide range, they should fit easily under the 300kb limit. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Also, consider that most, but not all pics, use far more colours than they need. Most scanners will scan in a drawing, painting, ect. at 16 million colours. Some newer computers scan them in at more.
The easiest and fastest way to reduce image file size is to reduce the ammount of colours it uses. The second you scan something, qaulity is lost. Reducing colours, too, reduces qaulity, but most of the time it's not noticeable. Try bringing your colours down from 16 million to 24 thousand, or from 24 to 36 thousand, or from 36 to 256. Qaulity will drop with every reduction, but you've got to find a balance between qaulity and file size.

Actually, reducing color depth doesn't work on JPEG's, they are inherently true-color.
GIF images, on the other hand, are inherently 256-color and many programs will automatically perform conversion to that palette size if you don't do it yourself.
Now, reducing the color-depth on a BMP image can reduce the image by as much as 2/3 (with small, yet noticeable color loss), but that's still no substitute for a better-compressed image format. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

That explains a lot. There is a lot of color in my art. So what should I do? Or is there nothing I can do? |

Hmm... is your images still in the 1200x1400 size range? If so, try shrinking it by about half and see how that affects the filesize.
When it comes to GIF's, you may be able to reduce the image size somewhat if you turn off color dithering while converting to 256-color mode.
When it comes to JPEG's, you should be able to adjust the JPEG compression options somewhere. Higher compression = lower quality = smaller filesize, so you should be able to find a good compromise between quality and filesize somewhere along the spectrum. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Well, I'm not to sure what color dithering is and I also don't know how to convert to 265-color mode. UGH! I'm so dumb! I also couldn't find how to use that higher compression thing. It's weird because whenever I post a picture on this site. It is soooo big! And I look at everyone elses pictures in their full size and they are nice and small and the perfect size. Mabey my computer just hates me. |

That's because many of us size our pictures in the (approximate) 800x600 range, and because when you view a pic, FAC automatically shrinks it down to 600 pixels wide if the image is too large. The image appears at its full size during the submissions process.
The first step is still the same, just resize your images to smaller dimensions and see how that affects the filesize. As a rule of thumb, scaling it down by 50% will generally reduce the filesize to about 1/4 of what it was previously....
We have a few resize tutorials (Photoshop, PaintShop, and MS Paint) on page 1 of the FAQ thread, check them out and see if they help you.
I'm also curious, what image-editing programs do you have on your machine? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
