Here are another four handy words for newbie survival:

[b]Don't Start A Fight.[/b]

Sounds pretty easy, right? Basically, if you're in a pissy mood, then you should probably cool off and get into a nicer mood before you post anything. Otherwise, you might end up yelling at people, who may probably yell back at you equally as strong, and if it gets out of hand, a moderator will have to step in and separate things.

For example. Several months ago a new member voiced a complaint about FAC's approval panel. They had submitted two pictures, one was rejected for its large size (before the auto-resize feature, we had a "no wider than about 600 pixels" rule), while the other one (which was about the same size) was approved. So they started ranting about how FAC's approval panel was a bunch of lazy bums because they didn't always enforce the rules the same way, red text and smileys...

Care to guess what happened? That's right, they got chewed out. By a moderator, in fact. They took the rebuke rather personally, packed up, left, haven't seen a trace of them since.

Another example. Somebody starts a thread called "You guys suck!" and begins bitching about how there are no "good" artists on FAC, there is only crappy art and crappy artists who make it.

Take a wild guess what happens next....

Yup. As much as we do have artists who need to learn a skill or two about art, we also have a good share of talented and skilled artists around here (and at the risk of bragging, I guess I'm one of them) . We point out that there are both bad [b]and good[/b] artists around here, in fact we give them some links to good artists and their galleries. But they aren't impressed, they keep swearing on how there's no 'good' art around here, how they hate seeing people drawing this and that in Paint and such, and they pepper their posts with profanity....

The only one they're listening to is themself, they're not interested in hearing what other people have to say, they're too busy chewing out and beating down other people who participate....

Next thing you know, a moderator has to come in and close the thread because they're fighting. That'll learn them, right?

But they're too angry for that, so they just make [i]another[/i] thread with the same rant all over again.

Moderator tells them to cool off and closes their thread so that people won't fight over it. The moderator's watching them closely now because they're causing trouble.

And sure enough, before long there's a 3rd topic with the same rant on it, and the moderator chews them out and closes it.

Then there's a 4th topic for the same thing. And a 5th topic.

Can you say "bad idea"?

Can you say "banned"?

Sure ya can. ;)

What's the moral? Yup, you don't go picking fights. If you can't say something nice[i]ly[/i], then don't say it at all.

I think I can give a few tips on how to survive in the Music forum.

1. Don't start a "OMG! [u]insert band name here[/u] SUCKS!" No matter what band you say, you will most likely get verbally bitch slapped if you don't give good, reasonable reasons and a convincing arguement.

2. Don't just start a thread dedicated to a band and then leave it to other members to start a discussion. There is a good chance that your thread will die out very quickly with the lack of discussions.

3. There are such things as band fangirls. Just like in the anime forum, they are not tolerated in the Music forum either. Try to control the "OMG! [u]insert band member name[/u] is sooooo HOT!" and keep those to yourself.

4. If you think fallen is tough in the music forum, wait until you meet Flea. He has no problem with tearing a pop rock band thread apart with convincing, harsh, and to-the-point arguments about why a certain pop band will suck ass. This is why if you have the unstoppable urge to start a thread dedicated to any MTV pop rock band then you better make it now before Flea comes back. You have been warned.

5. If you're going to start a poll like "who has the best whatever" then try to put in everyone you can think of. And if you can't remember all of the great bands or band members then you're better off just starting a thread asking for everyone's opinion instead of a poll. I learned this one from personal experience. It is very likely that someone is going to ask you "Why is [u]insert band name here[/u] not on the poll? They should be on here." If you don't want to be asked that then you're better off not starting a poll.

6. While it does help if you appreciate 80s hair metal and classic rock (it gets you on fallen's good side in the best way. ) don't be afraid to start a thread about a band you like. As long as you start a stimulating conversation and keep a mature attitude then you'll be okay. Sure, fallen, me and some other members might come in and give our opinion but none of it should be taken personally. Not everyone is going to like your music but hey, not everyone likes mine or fallen's taste in music. And thats okay.

7. May God have mercy on your soul if you talk trash about Guns n' Roses. (I'm just kidding! Once again, be reasonable and convincing. We won't agree with you but we will respect you for having the literal or metaphorical balls to say that.)



I hope these help the Newbies who go into the Music forum. Its fun there if you're a music fan like fallen, Flea, coolgurl and me. ^_^ Don't be afraid to post, we don't bite...hard. J/K!

That lesson actually applies much more broadly across the entire forums in general. Don't start ANY thread dedicated to ______ (and/or ______-fans) and expect other members to kick off the discussion. If YOU started the thread, YOU start the discussion. It's that simple.

And to continue from where fallen left off...

Flea was brutally honest with his opinions. He's been famous for crushing GC fangirls' dreams forum-wide and then some. One time he recorded quite the shocking (well, if you knew Flea like fallen did and me then you wouldn't be but if you just met him, it was a shock) rant against Good Charlotte. People loved it though and any GC fangirls that were in the Music Forum dropped out of there without a trace.

But like fallen, there was a very easy way to get on his good side. All you had to do was understand his guitar talk and he would be pracically licking your p*ssy. I made the (damn luckey) move of making my first comment directly to him about how I understood this explination he gave about Slash's guitar techniques and I was set for life. (I think he called me "Goddess" when he first posted to me but I could be wrong...God I can't remember crap today. :wacko: )

So if Flea liked you, he treated you pretty good ^_^ but if you got on his bad side (which was easy to do) then you were pretty much posting at your own risk in the Music Forum. :ph34r:

I feel like I just wrote an eulogy. That was depressing. No one else talk about Flea. I think fallen and I have covered all you need to know about him so no more Flea talk. Its very depressing to me (not sure if it to anyone else but I do miss him. )

Which events? I know he tended to offend some people but not that many. He got on the mods' good side. But I was still a no0b when he was active here and it wasn't long before he stopped posting so I don't really remember.
