 Im quite skeptical on this topic because there are so many movies that are all special effects, action, cool cars etc..... and some that really turned out good.

Well anyway, I kind of think movies are progessing more torward the middle but the effects and computer animation have come such a loooooong way
but what I m trying to ask is at the cost of special effects have movies began to lose thier plot.

I mean LOTR is good example for proving me wrong but for every good movie there sure are alot of crappy ones.

other question:
Can a movie with horrible plot but great special effects still entertain us ?

Well, there are some movies that suck! Special effects, now....that, well really is just trying to make the movie look good. LOTR was awsome!! Some movies that have bad plots, like AVP that have some specail effects, prolly still might not work. That movie was alright. But it's just my opinion, lemme get it straight for my self: Movies that have good plots, and good effects, awsome! Movies that have poor meaning to it and a week plot with still some good effects, I'd say just check it out, prollu might be worth watching, just not worth buying. Yeps, and movies that arn't good at all, I say use the DVDs for target practice! XD

I can't be entertained with special effects. I don't care how real it looks. I think about plot more.

I don't care if your robot/monster/thingymerjiggermerbobber looks believably real if there's absolutely no logic or reason for this Godforesakenly-expensive-to- make-movie.

Might one spend some of those millions on a dude who might actually be able to write a story....

Partly why I like watching Chinese movies, they have a little less of a habit of bogging themselves down with special effects. (Well, since labor is so cheap they just hire themselves a whole army instead of CG-ing it) Not that there isn't such as thing as a cruddy CHinese movie too.

a movie has to have a good plot for me to be able to watch it more than once , special effects do make the film more enjoyable ,but if the plots terrible, or non existant than they can stick as much special effects in and it still wont improve it . just an opinion .

Well yeah, some movies can be stupid: the village is one of them. It was weak. How could they say it was the #1 thriller, guess crituqes just say thyings nice now adays <_< yeah cherry is right, special effects do make a movie more enjoyable, but the plot has to be good as well. If the plot is bad....the director much get a life. Cat woman was also a bad movie, even Mrs. Berry hated her acting in that movie, things can be so sad these days. ha...

YES. The Village...was a stupid movie. -.- really stupid. also Cat Woman. -.-;; i agree with MedalMask.

i think its more of the person's opinion whether movies these days are progressing or not. it depends whether theyre affected by the plot...or the computer effects...or the thrill of it. there's differnt varieties. for example Shrek..was a simple story..it didnt stress much about a "brilliant complicated plot"..its point was to entertain, have cool computer effects, and have a comical sense of humor.
however if u think about movies like...say, The Grudge, that would be for the thriller part of it. film directors make movies to entertain people and stuff. like also, White Chicks...even tho that doesnt have a really that "great of a plot" or effects...... it was mostly to entertain the public. it all depends on the person's opinion. blaaah

A movie with good special effects is nothing if it doesn't have a good plot.

Example: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

hmm...lemme think a bit........................

Uh...good and bad.

^_^ good because of advanced CGI and <_< bad because some movies are just too explicit and some have poor plots and/or actors/actresses

yeah a lot of movies these days just look cool, but for people who aren't impressed by cg and big explosions there is a shortage of really good movies out now. for me the characters have to be real and interesting, either that or something who's just so fun and quotable. and the story has to be good with thing you can relate to, otherwise the movie is eh lame to me

Holly smokes !!!!!!!!
geez, I was gone only for about 4 days and look how my topic progressed Laughing

Well I think 2 examples of movies with terrible plot but neat effects is Van helsing (vomits) and Hellboy But..... For some reason I thought Constantine was better than both of them just not the best.

I went to see Million Dollar Baby yesterday, it was very good.

well if you think about it, when was the last time you saw a good movie that wasnt based on a true story, a book, or a remake. i think people are just plain running out of ideas.

Okay, here's an idea. How about a CGI Bruce Lee movie?

okay, Reggie.

The voices would be done by professional voice actors(duh!). Dont you notice some that can do lots of voices like Charlie Adler?
