I guess before The Beatles, there was noone. Didn't Elvis, Jimmy Hendrix or The Doors (to name a very few) hold any part in musical influence
Jimi Hendrix is certainly a huge influence. But don't forget the Beatles brought him to America. Betcha didn't know that, huh? I like the Doors quite a lot too... but they weren't as influential as the Beatles.
And about Elvis... well, he WAS very influential, especially on the Beatles, but he didn't write any of his own songs. Sure he was a good vocalist, but anybody could have done that. In fact the Beatles were some of the first rock performers to write all of their own lyrics. I guess yhe reason they are so influential, is because they came out with a big bang when rock was still new and exciting. They then took it to greater heights. They did things WAY differently, even if it doesn't sound like it now. Seriously, listen to some pop songs that were topping the charts six months before Sgt. Pepper's, then to some that were six months after.
(Interesting fact: Jim Morrison is Beatles-related too. Paul's wife Linda took photos of him before The Doors' debut album was even released. Yeah, I'm an admirer of Linda's. Wanna make something of it.) _________________ |

Argh. Influence is not the same thing as a rip off. Influence could be in sound, appearance, or motivation. Sabbath are nothing like the Beatles except that it was what made them play music. That's influence. They didn't copy or actively try to imitate them at all, simply motivated them to play. Even if a band that was influenced by NIN had never heard of the Beatles, the Beatles would have still had an effect on them by having an effect on NIN.
It was Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) that talked about his influences as "I'm influenced by Metallica. Well, if that's true, then you're really influenced by me, too, if you're influenced by Metallica. And if people are influenced by Megadeth, then they're really influenced by Metallica, too."
It's not direct.
And sure, The Doors, Elvis, Grateful Dead, Stones, Bob Dylan, countless others had a great deal of influence as well. That's not the point, though. No one is saying the Beatles are the be all end all of music. Simply that their influence is extremely widespread and reaches beyond the direct influences of the bands that came right after them.
I have no idea about the Elvis thing. Never liked him, never cared. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Now who influenced the Beatles? And so on and so forth...if you take it back far enough, traditional music is the influence of everything....and even further. Hehe, if you think about it, without Gregorian Chant, there would be no music as we know it. But this is not the point you're trying to make I suppose. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

I'm not trying to argue them as the "best band ever" ('cause I don't think they are). Simply that their influence is greater than people admit. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Have fun at the Crue concert, by the way. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

Indeed, leaving in the morning. What I won't do for those boys. Including an emptied bank account.
By influencing punk, the Beatles influenced Motley Crue. (no one can say I wasn't on topic ) _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
