it depends on how well-written the fanfic is...but dont u think lemons tend to get a bit overrated? i mean, a lot of comments on fanfics always say theyre great...but its just sexual activity that excites the reader. most of the fanfics ive read always emphasizes on the lemon scenes instead of developing the plot in a better way -.-.
dont u just sometimes think, that wen u read a good fanfci that DOESNT have a lemon...it gives u relief? its like your thinking "thank god its not again one of those stupid lemon fanfics..."

idk..any1 share the same opinion as i do? i guess im just getting sick of lemons..cuz a lot of ppl seem to have grown fond of writing them nowadays.

Lemons contribute as much to a story as simply saying "they made love until the cows came home." <_<

But my dear, it all depends on one's reason for reading the story in the first place. Or writing it, I suppose. People don't read stupid romance novels with Fabio on the cover for the gripping dialogue and complex plot twists.

They're overrated in the sense of 13-year-old kids writing/reading them...and writing them badly, I might add...to get fifty reviews of "OMG SO HOTT!".

Hm, when scenes get overrated, start writing with limitations and requirements. Like include a list of words not usually used often, or a few odd phrases and build around it. Don't write a story that depends on sex, doesn't work, if you are, just skip the plot entirely and don't even try to make a story if the sex at the center of a writing, just jump right into it. Though, with this kind of writing, it has to be something other than "Bang, in, out, you're done." If all you're going to write is sex, then make it damned sexy and don't even try with a plot.

Ah, now that's not entirely true. There's a handful of subjects (as in book, show, movie, etc.) that lend themselves to sex-centered stories that have definite and in some cases quite good plots. Most don't, of course, and it's merely an excuse to write smut. In that case, I agree, don't bother even trying to put a plot in there. But there are the rare times a story can have a perfectly acceptable plot that centers on the sex because it's an integral part of it and the original.

I would give examples, but the only really good one that comes to mind...eh, is just a little strange. Meh, I'll make it general. A story that features tension between two characters ("forbidden love", obstacles between them, separation, whatever) can easily have fanfiction written that centers on the sex while includes a plot. Sure, the same story could be written without it, but in some cases it's the act itself where a lot is revealed, so to speak.

But it's very much the exception. Most is just meaningless porn, but all the power to the people who do it well.

What story would that be? And how strange is it?

It's one I was beta-reading for someone. Not online yet, if it will be at all.

However, there's plenty more out there, since she gave me the link to where it will (perhaps) eventually be posted. The only reason it's "strange" is the circumstances are unlike most other stories, so it's very much the exception. It's Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal fics. A lot [most] focus on Lecter/Clarice, and in those cases a lot of the story is simply in the "lemon" scenes because it's the ultimate acceptance for Clarice, to admit she doesn't hate or fear him. (and to anyone who is unfamiliar with the books or films [books are better, as always], Dr. Lecter is a murderous cannibal, and Clarice is an FBI agent) Sure, the same story could be written without it, or a mere mention, and a good portion do that. But depending on the story, a lot of the revelations are in the "lemon" parts. Would you want someone who ate a person's face kissing you?

But those are obviously unusual circumstances, thus not the best example.

Indeed. It's hard to explain without a long, drawn out explanation.

(Silence is on television in about two minutes if you get the AMC channel lol Razz )

What a pity. Sad Well, were I not leaving in the morning, I'd invite you to watch my DVDs. Razz But it's only $2 to rent your own. I dunno, I can't decide whether you'd like them or not. Definitely have to like intellectual movies, but there's all the gore and suspense as well. Hm. Just don't watch with your mother.

Better yet, read the books.

Anyway, there's my two cents on the topic of "lemons". Way too many stories have them needlessly (well...useless to the plot anyway, not necessarily no purpose), but they're not entirely bad or simple smut.

I get fed up every time I go to read what seems like a humourous or serious fan fiction and end up reading what could be a Harlequin romance novel. A lot of the time, people who write fan fictions centreing around sex do it to live out their little hormone-induced fantasies. While there's nothing wrong with some sex, there's no point in reading it if it's just bad writing with some hot nudie sex sex thrown in.
