Cookies are just little pieces of information stored on your computer that Internet sites can use to identify you. (Because of this, cookies [i]can[/i] pose a security risk -- even though most cookies are essentially harmless)
For example, cookies are often used so that you don't have to log in every time you want to check the forums.
