What games do you think have shaped the way we play games today? Was it a trend-setter? Or maybe it's a timeless classic? Let's avoid 'flavour of the month' people, and give mention to the 'real' classics.

Mines would have to be:

Tetris One of the original puzzlers, and a concept that still isn't dated to this day. Simplistic and addictive.

Doom For many years, any first-person game to be released could be referred to as a 'Doom-clone'. It's been a standard in gaming since it's release. To me, a very important game.

Sonic The Hedgehog Bleedin' iconic. Gave Sega their most powerful mascot to date, and showed you don't have to be called Mario to make a good platformer.

Goldeneye Showed that movie licences can make good games, and set the bar for shooters.

These are just my opinions, I'm sure you people have your own choices, so let's hear 'em.

Oh yeah! Now I remember. It was Contra! It was one of the pioneers of Commando-type games.

Star Ocean: Great storyline, amazing use of interactive play to get different endings and cutscenes

.Hack Infection: The data drain and gate hacking uses are amazing. It's a way to let you cheat, yet not cheat at the same time. WTF? that made no sense, still, very good game.

You guys are crazy if you're saying Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, and .Hack are among the most influential games of ALL TIME.

Kingdom Hearts: The rules of an RPG? What, standard turn based battle? Because Tales of Phantasia's got it beat in the live action RPG scene, along with a few other SNES and PS games I can't recall the names of at the moment.

Star Ocean: Lots of RPGs have great storylines. And Chrono Trigger did the multiple ending thing way back. INTERACTIVELY, haha.

.Hack: Never played it, but some system that makes you stronger isn't the most innovative thing in the world. Kind of like busting out your gears to fight little monsters in Xenogears, just powering you up. Or, recently, not sure which came out first, but Mega Man Zero 3 has it where you could enter a cyber world where you are powered up and can't die when hitting spikes (one hit kills).

Edit: Street Fighter II IS one of the most influential games ever. Basically defined the fighting game genre.

I knew Rita would put Star Ocean. Hey, Leo, just try to understand her. She's a freak in these kinds of things.

Street Fighter, huh? How about Tekken?

Soul Calibur 2 maybe one of the best fighting games but I don't think it will fit in the category of "pioneers in gaming". The game's influence is still low.

Look at Mario or Sonic. Almost everyone knows 'em.

Soul Calibur II was probably one of the best ever because it was different. It had changeable weapons and gave a huge bunch of moves that you could do. I'd have to say that's pretty influential...

Now for my opinion ::evil cackle::

FINAL FANTASY: How could you NOT put this up?! This is what started it all! Squaresoft was on its last leg and then they came out with this, which saved their butts! It gave a whole new way to play a game.

LEGEND OF ZELDA- A new adventure for players to experience. It shall live on!! XD

SUPER MARIO BROS.!!!!- It was the music....I know it was...

Yeah, that's all I can think of right now...

Now that you said it...yeah, Soul Calibur and Soul Edge are the only(maybe) fighting games where you can choose weapons. Pretty unique. I'll have to agree with you.

Oh yes!!! Final Fantasy! The first RPG title. I forgot.

I agree with Leo on this one. What are you guys thinking putting the newer games up? They are good but not really influential. If you want to say "Soul Calibur 2" is influential....what about Soul Calibur? I would say that's a hell of a lot more influential since there couldn't even BE a Soul Calibur 2 without it.

If you're thinking of a fighter, say Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter.
Mortal Kombat was a huge influence because it was one of the first fighters that got busted for blood in the game. Nintendo refused to have the blood in their version. Sparking contraversy which sparked more intrest to have it in the first place!

As for RPG's of any kind....

Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy....they were influential. Kingdom Hearts grew from ideas of various other RPG's. It's storyline is full of other movies to fill the gaps they couldn't think up. I like Kingdom Hearts and am playing it currently, so no fangirl attacks. . . . .

no fangirl attacks, he says*laughs*. your humor amuses me, Matt.

Anyway, actually, both you and Leo are right. I think the people who are putting the newer games in their posts are delusional addicts of that kind of game(no offense, though. PEACE!!!).

The real pioneers/classics still have their titles existing until now. Like Final Fantasy and yes, what you said, Matt, Street Fighter.

The FF series *is* well known. i'd say it the whole reason everyone knows about Square Enix. maybe not WHOLE, but a pretty big chunk.

I agree with Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Goldeneye, Street Fighter II, and Final Fantasy.

I would also like to add Super Mario 64. I believe this game started the transition from 2D to 3D platformers.

Firstly, I must say that most of you are idiots.

Kingdom Hearts is a fantastic game, but influential? What has it influenced, Kingdom Hearts II? Honestly people, think for a moment.

Final Fantasy
Metal Gear Solid
Wolfenstein
Streets Of Rage

I know there were many Role Playing Games before the Final Fantasy series, but it's become a paradigm in quality for the genre, and the quality of many Role Playing Games has been measured against Final Fantasy VII (all of which, of course, have failed to measure up.)

Metal Gear Solid has influenced an influx in action that has not relied on violence and gore, but "tactical espionage action" - there are many games that could be traced directly back to this.

Wolfenstein because it basically set up the modern day First Person Shooter, that along with the likes of Doom, Quake and Half-Life have changed the face of slaying your enemies.

Streets Of Rage becase... well, if you've played it you'll know - possibly, in my not-so-humble opinion, one of the finest side-scrolling beat 'em ups in existance, and I'm sure it set a new bench-mark for gaming standards. However, I was young when it was out, and so I really don't know, but I'd definatly vote it for general awesomeness.

El, calling us idiots was just cruel...

and mind you, Metal Gear solid followed Metal Gear and Metal Gear2(the Zanzibar incident).

Well being cruel is needed when faced with this level of idiocy, to be quite honest.

Metal Gear followed Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Syphon Filter, Syphon Filter 2, Syphon Filter 3, Syphon Filter The Omega Strain, Syphon Filter Logan's Shadow, Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

I don't think it'd be far off to thank the popularity of the Metal Gear Series to all of the aforementioned games, and many more such as the Hitman series and more.

While the gameplay connections may not be obvious, I do believe that Metal Gear's popularity played a part in making them possible.

Kingdom Hearts, however, influenced nothing...

First off, I'd say Pac Man and Tetris are the most infulential. They practically started the business.

I'd have to say Street Fighter, Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy, and the Metal Gear Series are next.
