I think this song pretty much sums up life for the most part. I like it a lot, plus it's stuck in my head...^^; So, anyone else listen to it? Thoughts? |

I think she needs to invest in a dictionary so she can look up the word "irony". _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Ah, gotta love I <3 The 90's....
It's like rain on your wedding day. That's not ironic, that just sucks!
It's the good advice, that you just didn't take! That's just pure stupidity!
Isn't it ironic that she named the song Ironic and none of it is ironic? |

Actually, the "she should buy a dictionary" thing has been done by tons of comedians since she first released the song. It was an old joke by the time they did I Love the 90s. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I remember back when I was in grade 10... I suppose like 2 years after the song was released, my english teacher was bitching about it. "Please.. do not use irony examples from that damn song"... I suppose kids had been doing that.
And isn't it sucky... don't ya think? Would that have been better _________________ |

That song is so annoying, it gets stuck in your head and I personally want to bloody my head on the dash board to get it out. _________________ My candle burns at both ends;

I'm a child, I'm a mother, i'm a sinner I'm a saint... Those were the days.
Anyways, yes, I do love the song although there are no irony examples in it at all. Gotta <3 Alanis. Well, at least I do. _________________ |

well, the very first part was kinda ironic. There are a couple examples. "An old man, turned 98, won the lottery, and died the next day" Funny, and a bit ironic since that's not usually what the outcome should be. also "It's meeting the man of my dreams, then meeting his, beautiful wife" lol, that one was funny. I think that'a pretty good example of irony. |

That's barely irony. Almost all the things in that song are just unfortunate, not ironic. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

yea heres an example of irony. little susie was walking along the lake and saw a turtle lying in the sun. Trying to keep it moist and save it she threw it in the lake and it sunk to the bottom and drowned because it was actually a tortoise. |

That's not ironic, that's a little girl who didn't know what the hell she was doing and killed something. |

Actually, that's a pretty standard text book situational irony example. There's a similar one in my world lit book if I bothered to look it up.
The irony is that she meant to save it but ended up killing it. Opposites.
Old people die, that's not really very ironic. Unfortunate that he died right after winning a bunch of money, but a 98-year-old man dying is to be expected and not related nor opposite to the lottery winning. The man of your dreams having a wife...yet again, quite unfortunate, but not very ironic. How is the man of your dreams being married the opposite of what's expected? You expect every person you fall for to be available? Delusional. There's slight amounts of irony in it, but not very much.
Not counting other forms of irony, like dramatic where the audience/reader knows something the characters don't, but that wouldn't apply to her little song anyway.

Irony is when a girl sells her hair to buy a watch chain for her boyfriend, who sold his watch to buy combs for her hair. _________________ |

Uh guyz,
irony: . Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs.
That means it can be "unlucky" and "idiotic, stupid" but its still irony because it doesn't happen the way you expect it to. <_<

No. When it says "what might be expected" it does not mean any difference between expectation and what actually happens. If I expect it to be sunny tomorrow but it rains, that is not ironic.
However, to use the examples from earlier in the thread,
"little susie was walking along the lake and saw a turtle lying in the sun. Trying to keep it moist and save it she threw it in the lake and it sunk to the bottom and drowned because it was actually a tortoise." It is expected that the 'turtle' would live if put in water, but the fact it turned out to do the opposite is ironic.
"a girl sells her hair to buy a watch chain for her boyfriend, who sold his watch to buy combs for her hair." It is expected that the other person would like the gift, but ironic that they could no longer use them in order to buy a gift for the other.
See how that works? It's general expectation, not personal. Simply being unlucky or unfortunate isn't being ironic. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
