I bought a tablet for about $100 about 4 or 3 years ago. As of right now, it is collecting dust, mainly because I think the pen's gotten messed up somehow.
Is a tablet worth it? Yes, but you have to ask yourself a few questions:
How often do I draw on the computer?
Will I only use it for colouring purposes?
There are some strange side benefits to getting a tablet and using one for awhile. After I gave up using my tablet I discovered I drew much better than I used to using my mouse. (And I mean 100x better.) So it's really up to you to decide whether you'd like one or not. |

Anyway, it isn't worth it, believe me... _________________

It's worth it for digital painting and the pen pressure sensitivity.
Solid colors, no. Vector, no. Even lineart to some extent, no.
But pen pressure is ten times better and easier than fiddling with opacities and a mouse. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Yes, but in that case you must have a lot of expierence with digital painting to be able to use it properly... _________________

And you will only get that experience by having the tablet to practice with. ;)
And hand skills to some extent. But no amount of practicing with a mouse will help you master the tablet, everyone's art looks like crap when they first get one 'cause it's a whole new set of hand/eye movements. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Well Fallen, in that case my answer would be....
TO THE PRACTICE-MOBILE BATMAN!
But still, I don't recommend it... _________________

I know this is a little bit off topic, but do the tablets require a certain program, or maybe things no your computer (such as fast processor, graphics, memory, etc...)?
And, say I were to buy one, would this be a good on to get or not? |

Yes,that tablet is a good choice.Wacom makes the best tablets. If you're going to use a tablet, once you've installed it it'll work on your computer. But one of the best features of tablets, pressure sensitivity, only works on certain programs(Photoshop,Corel Painter,Open Canvas,etc...)Pressure sensitivity does not work on MS Paint.Oh,and if you don't have Painter or Photoshop already, don't worry.I think all versions of Wacom tablets come with a version of Photoshop and Corel. |

Cool. Thanks. I have a program called Photofiltre. If you know anything about it, will it work on that? That is somewhat like Photoshop.... I think. |

Damn, my attempts never look like pencil when I use my tablet. And it's a good one too. I guess I just need to keep playing around with it. What are the best settings for it? _________________ My dA ~ My F-C gallery~ My LJ |

That's an individual thing. I keep mine in the middle though leaning a bit toward 'hard.' You might need to adjust the settings in the actual program you're using. If you're on photoshop, set the opacity and size things to 'Stylus.' _________________ Go Yankees! |

Thanks...I didn't even know that there were adjustments to make in Photoshop. I only got it recently. _________________ My dA ~ My F-C gallery~ My LJ |

If you installed the Wacom Driver, it offers a own menue, were you can adjust the pressure and "pen style", if you want to press hard, soft.. etc. and you can also choose the acitve area on your screen, like if you have two screen and you want to work only in photoshop on only one screen you can set it there, also the other settings can be done programm-specific, just click on that top window in the wacom tablet setting window, chose a program and add it. If you have an Intuos or Cintiq edition you can set the pressure directly on the tablet, there is a button for soft-med and firm pressure, that is quite practical and you don't need to find the settings in the menue and so on.. _________________ - hmm... did someone say "MUFFIN"? - |
