I started to read LOTR and finished the FIRST BOOK after an entire YEAR. I attempted to finish the second, but it appears that Tolkien got extra-descriptive in that one. _________________ Ah, so you've decided to read my signature. I don't care what the rest of the world think.. I say TOLIKIEN SUCKS! Well... maybe that's a bit overboard.. but I seriosly thing he's very over-rated. :P
If you want good fantasy read some Dragonlance novels. Or anything by Tad Williams or Raymon E. Feist. _________________

DG-sama, you got a prob with tolkien? hah! im a tolkien/lotr fan. ur a good artist and i thought someone like u would love tolkien and his stuff...guess not.
he does not suck. and i dont think he's overrated... you just cant appreciate and understand the way he wrote his novel. maybe thats it. u just dont see the greatness in his work and all that. |

I like Tolkien's work. Sometimes a bit confusing, but I really do like a lot of detail in what I read. One of my favourite author's - but not my number 1 author.
I've only atually read up to halfway through the Return of the King. I should really read the rest... But maybe it's best if I started from the very beginning - It's been like a year and a half since I've read it... o.0 |

I must say that Patrick O'Brian takes the cake in wordiness. He must fit twelve history books in throughout the Master and Commander series, which is great, by the bye. As for Tolkien's writing, I must say that I hate the Hobbit, and I wasn't nearly as fond of his writing style in the trilogy as in the Silmarillion. I suppose we're just lucky he's not a fan of symbolism, or it would have been twice as long. For instance, The Scarlet Letter could have been fit into fifty pages, I think.
The advantage of the Silmarillion is that it reads somewhat like the Bible. So many people go in and out so quickly because it's the history of the Elves for thousands of years, that they can't afford to put too much description. Like the Bible, it also has it's somewhat tedious or confusing parts, though. I like Tolkien more for his ideas and amazing linguistic skills than for his writing. Can't have a good story without a good idea. |

Raymond E. Feist is exceptionally good reading, I agree! I like LOTR, but I don't think it's as amazing as some people say it is... |

Aww... description isn't all that bad. Who wants to read a plot-plot-plot book? Extra-descriptiveness just adds to the thinking... I say Tolkien is a great Author. But maybe thats just me.. Too bad they made the movie, it was really horribly bad, in comparison with the book. Action-action-action. Come on, don't any of us have brains anymore?! Or maybe its just a cospiracy.... _________________ "Pregnant?? We Can Help!"
