Well, I'd like to think that since this is an ART based website, that maybe some people on this site (since it seems to be a mainly younger audience) may be interested in attending an art college after they complete high school. I would highly recommend trying for anyone who'd like to have some sort of career involving art (even if that is comic books or anime ^_~).
I thought it might be good to start a thread about art colleges, because applying is no walk in the park. o_o Besides, college is a weird and confusion thing. It often helps to get advice and help from someone who's been there!!
I can't said I've been to art college yet, but I have spent the past several months researching art colleges, scholarships, and applying. I've learned lots, and I'd like to be able to help those who will be going through the same thing in the future.
I am thrilled to announce though, that as of last Friday, I have been accepted into the Art Institute of Houston as a new freshman this fall, and will be receiving a scholarship to attend as well. ^_____^ I worked very hard, and I am very proud. I'd like to be able to use what I've learned to help y'all out if possible!
If you have any questions, or anything, feel free to ask!! And if you actually are attending art school now, please share your experiences!! |

Congratulations! You'll have to tell us all about it k? Applications are a pain. X_x Any places in general that you would recommend? I've learned to start looking early. XD So anyways, good luck! And don't forget the little people when you become famous! -.= V _________________ I hate you. That's all. |

Thanks Li, you so sweet. ^_^ Yea, applications suck, but portfolios suck more!! X_X Don't worry, I won't forget all the great people I've met along the way. ^_^ IF I get famous. :P
I would totally recommend the Art Institutes. They are ALL over the country, and they are highly regarded as the best art colleges in the state. If you're aiming high, then you're probably going to want to get to a major city, and by that I mean New York City, Chicago. From what I've heard, Pratt in NYC and the Art Institute of Chicago are two of the very best, but also very difficult to get into. The Art Institutes are good colleges though, and if you don't want to go too far away, chances are there is one at least in the next state, if not in the one you live in. Some states have two. ^_^ |

Was thinkin' about Chicago myself. Really should start a portfolio soon... Not sure I'd want to move to Chicago, but who knows. Was thinkin' about Cali, but with Ahnold in charge, it may fall in the ocean before I even graduate.
I told you before, but congrats again! _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I know there in one in San Francisco, Li, but I think there is more than one in Cali. I know there are two in Texas, Houston where I'm going, and Dallas. If you go to the Art Institute website, it should list all of the Art Institutes around the country. ^_^

Have you ever been to Chicago Fallen? It's a pretty cool city. I was really considering Chicago, especially since Chicago is only a five or so hour drive from where I live. And from what I've heard, Chicago is one of the BEST. ^_~ You'd do great there.
And portfolio. o_o Don't do what I did. Start now!! ;_; What I went through was terrible. Whenever you're ready, either just start doing some generally well rounded things, or look into the portfolio requirements for the colleges and fields that you are considering. What are you thinking about going into? |

Nope, never been to Chicago. And I have no idea what I want to go into, really. I'm finishing up the series of graphic design courses here as well as every other art class offered (so hey, 'least I have that goin' for me on my application, too. And there's an Independent Study course where part of the time is spent putting together a portfolio, but I'll definitely be starting before then). Unfortunately portraits are, as said in the other topic, a nice part time money maker for spare or emergency cash, but there's not exactly a lot of careers in it.
Actually, my dad went to this really cool warehouse type place for this company that creates exhibits for other companies. Like the booths or fancier stalls you see at tradeshows n' stuff. They can get pretty complex. That might be cool. He said it was the neatest thing to see because each artist (or in some cases, a group) had their own little area and was working on designing a different exhibit. Then they take it apart, ship it off to wherever it's needed, and store it for the company afterwards. I'm not very good at construction type stuff, though, so that'd be an area I'd have to improve.
So many options. I'm not that great at logos n' stuff, so graphic design is really just another elective spot to be filled up. You know what you'll be focusing on yet? _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Career wise I have some options, but I am majoring in Animation. At AIH it's impertinant to know, because your portfolio requirements depend on it. However, ideally I'd rather do comics and whatnot than animation. But many of the skills required are learned in this major.
In three years I'll have my bachelors in Fine Arts. Go me! *shudders at the thought of all the work*
I will probably always dabble in other things as well though, on top of my drawing. I love working on a pottery wheel, and I make kick ass metal jewelry, so I'll probably continue to do that on the side as well. Oh yea. And commissions. |

That's cool. I haven't taken an animation class since 7th grade, except a 3D class that focused on logos n' stuff with Cinema 4D. Blah. Teacher didn't even know how to work the program. He had me help everyone because I actually read the instructions. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Well, I prefer the 2D stuff to 3D, and especially love cels, even though I know they are mostly obsolete now. ^_^;; I will be learning both techniques I believe, including making 2D animations digitally. I'm terrified and excited at the same time. |

Hi, since you were talking about the art institute schools...I've been going to one for a little over 6 months. And i would totally recommend them to anyone really serious about art. Now it is a lot of work but it's a really really great school. My major is game art and design, but it's virtually the same as animation, with the exception of a few classes. But i'd be happy to answer any questions if anyone has any. oh yeah and as far as the chicago campus, i go to the one just outside chicago, and i'd have to recommend it over the one in the city, it's actually much more career oriented, especially in the animation department. |

That's awesome Ammotu! Go you!! It's great to have another person's word on it. You can answer questions too there, especially since you're already there. ^_^ Man, I can't wait now! It's going to be so cool!
Tell me though, are you able to get enough sleep? o_o I am concerned with my levels of sleep. |

Yes it is! Someone has to design cars!
Say, where do you live? The art college closest to where I live is KNOWN for it's vehicle design. Probably because it's located in the automotive capital. Detroit! The college is the College of Creative Studies, and it's a good college from what I've heard. Don't know if you're interested, but I thought I'd let you know. ^_~ |

Ammotu: Yea, CCS is a good school, a lot of my friends will be going there, but Detroit is not for me, and CCS is not exactly the best for what I want to do, so I figured I'd look elsewhere.
And thank you. ^_~ Haido-san is mah bitch. Man, I love that little Japanese hottie!! XD You and I have so much in common. :3
Spook: Yea, look into it! ^_^ You got plenty of time, but it never helps to know what you want to do ahead of time, to be prepared. |
