not really, i thiink it's just like this. Denis (webmaster) has a lot of work to do and e-mails to answer so not everything is going be a okay all the time on the site. It's still a work in progress, like all sites are.
And you have to remember there are a lot of new people joining all the time and such. More important things like the option to delete things and such and all that good stuff.

*Pictures containing other artwork (usually official) such as most wallpapers*
I strongly believe this should not be allowed. How is it fanart? Anybody could take some picture and make some wallpaper by using simple photoshop effects. It only takes a few minutes.... obviously by the amount that some people produce and post in a day. It's kind of annoying coming onto fanart central, wanting to see fanart, and getting wallpapers. And most of the wallpapers are just so horribly done as well. I say if you want to make wallpaper and post it on fanart central so badly, then use your own art in it.
*CGing somebodys lineart (with permission & credit) (official? other fanart?)*
*Using other peoples fanmade characters (This has caused big problems in other communities)*
PERMISSION
*Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)*
I've done this once with a sailor moon picture. I don't like taking straight from an existing pose but I get ragged on so much because people don't like the poses I put them in. I actually get hate male from people.
I think that as long as credit is given though, that it should be allowed. And if it is totally obvious that they traced it, or just posted the original then .. ya know... not to be allowed Sometimes it's hard to tell whether it's been traced though.... anywho...
*Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)*
Never really see a whole lot of cosplay... yeah I'm sure it's fine ;)
*Should completely original artwork be allowed here (It is rather off topic for a fanart site)*
Yup.
*Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?*
*Photographic backgrounds?*
*sprite Comics?*
Nope.
Well that is my 2cents.
p.s for lasher. If ya need any help with the drawing of the bad guys I would love to help _________________ |

Pictures containing other artwork (usually official) such as most wallpapers
-I honestly don't think it's considered fanart.
If nothing else, I thinkit should be in its own category and not with the drawn stuff.
CGing somebodys lineart (with permission & credit) (official? other fanart?)
-Only if they have permission
Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)
-If it's an exact duplicate of the original (official or otherwise) I don't consider it legit fanart. You're basically taking credit for someone else's idea which isn't fair to theoriginal artist.
Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)
-To a certain extent yes. I'd put it ina separate category than drawn stuff though.
Using other peoples fanmade characters (This has caused big problems in other communities)
-Only with that person's permission.
Should completely original artwork be allowed here (It is rather off topic for a fanart site)
-Yes!
I mean granted it is a fanart site, but you'd be missing out on a lot of good artwork by eliminating it.
Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?
-I really don't think so. It's not really creating anything, just changing somethingthat already exists.
Photographic backgrounds?
-If at least half of the pic was created by the artist, I think it's passable.
sprite Comics?
Not quite sure what those are.
Overall I think things like cosplays are considered fan creations, it would be wonderful to see more of them here, but I think it would be much better off having its own section rather than combined with the drawn fanart.
They're legit art forms, but still totally different things entirely. They're not conventional "fanart" but are fanmade afterall.

Wallpapers made of offical images seem to not be considered approprate here by most people who have commented here.
Those with such content to post can submit them to other sites like
Anime Wallpapers.com
or
Aniverse's wallpaper section
or any of the other many such sites. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |
I'm not too worried about legality and copyright laws here. Unless you do somthing to piss them off, its not worth the effort of animation studios and such to sue over a few pics posted. It is an issue I wil deal with if I start getting emails from lawyers...and even then I probebly wont care much.
Regarding the permission issue. I dont expect people to try to get permission from offical work, thats just not gonna happen. I do expect permission from other artists when their stuff is used tho.
But we who know it belongs to someone else have a problem with it. You wouldn't like seeing a site identical to FAC out there...
And I think the whole point, more than it being illegal, is it's worthless. Who wants to see something that person didn't create? The original's out there, and as I said before, FAC is not a site for people to find wallpapers on. Allow it now and I guarantee the site will be flooded with sloppy wallpapers with poorly cropped official art. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. -Pictures containing other artwork (usually official) such as most wallpapers-
Well, this one's a little questionable...I take a LOT of time when I make these, but not many people usually do. Perhaps it should have a catagory if people get too complainy
-CGing somebody’s lineart (with permission & credit) (official? other fanart?)-
For fanart, I'd say that would be okay. For official, I think you'd have to tell where you got the picture, and as long as you don't say you drew it, that should be fine.
-Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)-
Sure, as long as it's not all that you do.
-Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)-
Sewing is techincally considered a 'craft' rather than an 'art'. But, I think it'd be fine, personally.
-Using other peoples fanmade characters (This has caused big problems in other communities)-
Same thing with the permission thing.
-Should completely original artwork be allowed here (It is rather off topic for a fanart site)-
If you wanted STRICTLY fanart, then it couldn't be allowed. However, I really think that having original artwork adds a lot to the site, so I would like it if we could still have it.
Isstuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?-
I don't think I would count it as fanart if we were talking about the traditional sense...but it is artistic, as long as people put effort into it. But hey, not everyone puts forth great effort for regular fanart either.
-Potographic backgrounds?-
I think it looks horrible, but I suppose if some of your artwork is in thee, it should be okay.
-sprite Comics?-
I don't think so...these are usually just off of official ones. |

I've been sick n' don't even wanna think about reading through everything I missed. So everyone be considerate of all the times I'll probably come off looking like a moron when the answer is two posts before mine. Well this sucks... I think we should be allowed to put wallpapers... I mean, as long as we're not just taking someone's immage, and saying "there tha's my wallpaper" we shoud be able to come on... I mean people modify each other's work all the time. Look at "the fantum of the opera" for instance... there are over 100 versions of that all togther... |

I really don't think that wallpapers should be taken off. I happen to take a lot of time making my wallpapers. It's not just about 'throwing pictures together'. It's a matter of putting them together to make your own creation. It's like making a collage, which are very artistic, and can be considered fanart when you use offical pictures. I kind of get offended when people are saying how it barely takes any time, when with me it really does. I really don't think that's a good idea to take those down. |

Oh, also, I'm not saying that other people don't take a lot of time and effort to make wallpapers, I'm just saying that I know for a fact that I do =P. |

It's not really a matter of them not taking a lot of time, though. They aren't appropriate for the site. I could spend 100 hours making a gingerbread house, and it could be wonderful, but that doesn't make it something that belongs on FAC. The fact the pictures, the part that is actually the fanart, isn't created by the artist makes them (in my opinion) better suited to the other sites listed that are dedicated to such creations.
I (and several other people, it seems) come here to see work drawn by the people. If I wanted a wallpaper, I'd go to one of the other sites listed (or DA, but DA does not allow official art in wallpapers, either, for the same reasons).
Basically, if rips aren't allowed in any other form, why should they be allowed just because they're in a 600x800 format? _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

well all walllpapers are 800x600 or if you have windows xp it will be 1024x768 it depends on what pixels you have, but anyways, dident see any anything about wallpaper making in the rules and thats another thing, making wallpapers is a art too, the scans of artworks from art books and other stuff are made for graphics..........have you ever seen some of the work from scans and you wonder how the graphics got in there and a lot of people make the living making them, its part of computer graphics useing other images.........and about screen caps..............SCREEN CAPS ARE NOT COPYRIGHTED!!!!!!!!!! screen caps are the pictures that are made for T.V. and you take pictures off of programs that you use.........i cap most of my pics and i make wallpapers out of them and they where done by the person who took the caps........but what really pisses me off is there where no rules about wallpapers and it was a real big pain in the @$$ to take all those wallpapers down............you copyright complainers can do so much damage.........but you guy can't see its a skill useing images and it takes work and time to make the whole damn wallpaper to fit in...............but wallpapers are a skill too.........the images are copyrighted but they can be used for computer grapics..........and thats that! |

Yeah but what you're missing is that unless you're some professional animator, chances are you didn't create the screencap used to make the wallpaper.
No one's disputing how much time it takes for you to make a wallpaper and we're not even going to get into copyrights, the point is that unless YOU created the picture, it's not supposed ot be here.
And it's not like there isn't any place else to post wallpapers at... |

Exactly. Notice I said above that it's not even about how long one takes on it. It's the fact that person did not draw the images. Would it be acceptable to tell the exact plot of an existing movie in your own words and upload it as fanfiction? Sure, you spent a great deal of time on it, and you may be a fabulous writer, but you didn't create the story. Not only are you borrowing characters, you're taking things that should be created by the artist doing the uploading (the plot, or in the case of wallpapers, the pictures). _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. wave at the newbie!
anyway, i joined this place pretty recently, and *just* came into the forum for the first time... anyways, i'll usually lay low for a while before posting anything, but i think these issues are important..
$.02
:

Pictures containing other artwork (usually official) such as most wallpapers
noooo honestly, if i came to a place called "fanart central" i'd be here to see -fanart- , not some official art in wallie size.. i'd go to a place that specialises in wallpapers ^^

CGing somebodys lineart (with permission & credit) (official? other fanart?)
grey area..

Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)
honestly, i don't like to see copies of work.. at most they should be for practice, not to have other people drool over "your work" when it really isn't... i mean, use what you learn from copying and apply it to your own works ^^

Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)
i've done cosplay, but i'm not posting em .. they're kinda goofy..
but i don't see why there couldn't be a category for cosplay outfits people have created (not done by friends, mom, or walmart). unless it becomes short on server space^^

Using other peoples fanmade characters (This has caused big problems in other communities)
i think that much like copyright, its up to the original creator as to wether people could use their characters.. HOWEVER permission MUST be granted (and all other conditions the original artist may have)
It happened to me, they "claimed" to have my permission. never seen or heard of em before, SUCKED (esp. after finding one who sold art of one of my charas..)
for the most part, i've haven't seen major companies care a lot about fanart (except disney & Ann Caffery [sp?]), but small non famous artists take damage from that

Should completely original artwork be allowed here (It is rather off topic for a fanart site)
yes. its a natural progression of artists.. don't stifle it

Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?
<_<

Photographic backgrounds?
shakey.. i don't use em personally unless i tok the photo, but with stockphotos & public domain images, whatnot its very grey area

sprite Comics?
see response to wallpapers
[/list:u]
Also, penalties for breaking whatever rule set is defined. The wall of shame is what I came up with long ago, anybody have any better suggestions?
honestly, that mark in your gallery sound like a very good idea.. its not like people know or remember the names of theives even after looking thru the hall of shame ( i don't ^^; .. planting it right on the gallery is much more noticeable |
