There has been some discussion on wallpapers I'd like to address. First of all, collage itself is a very legitimate and widely used form of art. I can think of at least two famous artist off the top of my head who were quite famous for their work in collage. There is composition to be considered, balance, and most of all it can clearly convey emotion. If this is not art, someone please explain to me what is.

Another few points were made that some people did not want to come to look at wallpaper-perhaps a catagory should be made for it, then. But I disagree to not counting it as fanart.

Well, I only mentioned how long it takes because people were mentioning before how you can put things together and it doesn't take as much effort as drawing something.
But anyways, what makes it not belong on Fc? Like someone said, that would just be a pain to do anyways, make rules for wallpapers and take them all down. Plus it's called Fan ART central, which includes artistic things, which include wallpapers, which are like collages. Art is NOT limited to drawing. There is a much wider range than just simply drawing, inking, and sometimes coloring a picture of a favored character. You do NOT always have to draw something and consider it to be your art. I believe that art should have more freedom than just drawing.
And when you do put these pictures together, it IS like creating an image. It's a respectable form of art, and I think it's fine that we post them here. Plus...if you borrow the characters in doing wallpaper...don't you do the same thing when you draw fanart? That's just what I assume.
I think that if anything, we should have a seperate section of wallpapers. But I think it would be best to keep them on.

How would making a new category fix anything? They would STILL be on the recently submitted list and STILL be where some people don't want to see them. And, in case you never noticed, last time I checked there was a wallpapers/backgrounds category that has existed for as long as I've been here.

That was a nice shot you took at Denis about copyright. He's correct. The art is copyrighted, which IS different than taking a screenshot of a television program because no one drew that episode of Friends. Is that show still technically property of the company that created it? Yes, but there's no way it would ever be as strictly enforced as someone taking a still of an animated show.

NO ONE IS DEBATING WHETHER OR NOT COLLAGE IS ART. Stop using that argument. It's not anywhere near the issue. NOT ALL ART IS ACCEPTABLE ON FAC. I thought that was pretty well covered. Is there art other than drawing? Of course. Have you ever stopped to think that wallpapers aren't even the issue? It's the art you're using. No one's saying wallpapers and collages won't be allowed. Wallpapers and collages that use OFFICIAL ART are what people don't like.

Why was there no rule against them? Because Denis never made in depth rules, as you would notice if you checked the "about" section and such that was left unfinished for quite some time (and may still be, haven't looked) and said it would be continued when there was time. There's now time, and he's looking to write the official rules. Why can't you all understand that? Just because there's no rule that says you can't doesn't mean you automatically should be able to. He's been kind enough to allow people to post original art, and on a site called FANART central, that's pretty damn nice of him. It's his site, and whether you like it or not, ripping official art (used artistically or not) IS not and SHOULD not be allowed at this time.

Whatever he decides will be the rules, and calling him a complainer (for one) was perhaps not the brightest of moves to get your point across. None of us are complaining! Denis ASKED for opinions on what should be allowed for the OFFICIAL rules that were never established. Will some people have to remove their art? Yes, but it's not like there's nowhere else to put it. You know what? It doesn't take very long to click that little delete button.

And should the rule be made, it's even faster for me to click the "delete all pictures" button, which would be real welcome, it seems, by a lot of us. <_<

Jesus, that was a lot... I swear, this repetetive crap gets old. Please, read what has been said carefully and understand what the problem is before ranting.

If you don't want to look at it, just don't go into that section. This isn't about you, and your/others' personal liking of backgrounds or wallpapers. I would rather keep the wallpapers for the people who do like them. As far as the copyright issue with official art, it could be required to link back to the site, and/or get permission from the webmaster. And people who use other fanartist's work in their collage without permission should be punished just like anyone who claims other work to be their own.

Oh, and one other person asked before how collage was art, so I wanted to confirm that. It was not directed at anyone else.

As it is, this site gets over 200 pics a day.

I have to do somthing to limit the scope of whats allowed on this site or within half a year it'll be up to like 1000 a day.

There are limits to the resources this site has, I can't allow everything.

Photography may be art, but that doesn't mean its within the scope of this site (which this thread is here to define)

Not just space.

Bandwiwth (this uses like 10 gigs a day as it is)
Too many pics in categories to make browsing easy
Pics pushed off the front page too soon (was a big problem before i made the recent pics page after the site got big)
Server processing (you may have noticed the site very slow a while ago when there were like 50 people on, before i optimized the database structure for read speed)

Exactly. A lot of people who have been here a long time don't go into the sections and just check the recent uploads because we've seen everything in those categories. I haven't looked in a category in months. I just care about the new things, and as Denis said, the recent updates list has been and will always be a problem as the site grows. When I first got here, the site had been up for quite awhile. It was still small enough that some pictures from the very beginning were still on the list, and most everyone was able to look at everything that was uploaded. I love the fact there's new people with new ideas and things they do, but the line has to be drawn somewhere or the list just gets impossible to browse. If everything's allowed, the recently submitted list will completely change every day.

That's the biggest problem with sites like DA that I hate. It's so huge that your picture is gone in ten seconds. I really liked having my work on the top ten most recent list here for hours, sometimes a day, depending on when I submitted. Now I'm lucky if it's there for five minutes before there's fifty sketches above it. I mean, I know there are a lot of bad things about places like Epilogue being so exclusive, but there's certainly something to be said for quality control. I know if I go to epilogue I'll be able to easily find a person's best. These days FAC is getting to be a sketch dump with a few personal bests now and then. As someone who's lucky to finish one piece a month, having things that don't belong on top of the sketches is a slap in the face. I don't know if it's because of this, and it could very well be because of school, work, and other things, but some of the very best artists on the site barely upload at all anymore. I won't name names, but some people who were absolutely adored are gone, and it's a real shame if it's because their work started being skipped over more (and I watched the amount of comments drop on everyone as the number of users increased).

It's a neverending problem, but maybe it helps put a different perspective on why we don't want things like official art at all? It's not like we're just trying to be mean.

(and if you need an easy visual of the user increase, check out the contests page. The first contests got a small number of entries and they've gotten more and more responses every month. Obviously the most on the "draw anything", which was insane to try and vote on)

Edit: I've been writing AP history final essays and practice essays, so pardon my long winded-ness. WTF?

Personally, I think if people are caught stealing artwork, be it official or other, their account on this site should be deleted. If they flame people or are very disrespectful, they should get three chances to straighten up, then have their account deleted if a fourth offense is committed. To me this is fair game.

That's what the wall of shame is for. Nothing like a little public humiliation to deter people from stealing art. Razz
Yeah I try to upload in the middle of the day when there's a lot of people on, cause otherwise it's gonna get shove in with everything else and overlooked.
I hate making suggestions about quality control because I don't want to sound condescending, but there's a lot of doodles on here that look like they take hardly any time or effort at all (as opposed to pencil sketches which take more effort).
I'm not commenting on anyone's artistic ability, but the presentation of hteir work is what makes the quality not very good. I pretty much agree with what fallangel has said before.
It's not very good for viewers who come on this site to look at good art.
There was a similar problem with mediaminer's site a while back. Too laid back on what was accepted, and the disk space and bandwidth problem became a huge mess because people were allowed to upload pretty much any crap they wanted. Because of that, fanart section was down for several months.
I'd suggest maybe some slight quality control on what is allowed. Not to be mean, but it would be much better for the site.
That's just my two cents.

ok- i think origionals should be allowed, simply because, people have other talents other than copying other peoples work........ *angry* and besides SOME people prefer to be origional and idfferent... *fumes in a corner* and as far as copying goes, its still fanart, because they have taken the time to redraw it, meaning they like it, they are a fan.... and i'll get back to you on the rest that don't concern me or my compadres.

Defenetly Not!

CGing somebody’s lineart (with permission & credit)

With Premission and Credit, yes

Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)

I dont think it should. Using an existing pic as a basis for what youre gonna draw should be okay, but Redrawing of an existing pic to me is plagerisim.

Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)

Of course! Pattern making, and sewing is an art. Its 3-d art

Using other peoples fanmade characters

As long as you have that persons premission, and credit that person

Should completely original artwork be allowed here

No, Thats what Elfwood is for.

Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?

Rolling eyes No

Photographic backgrounds?

only if you took the photo.

sprite Comics?

I dont know what this is

Elfwood is extremely limited, inconsistent, and slow. Let alone their policies for simply signing up. You have to upload in batches; it takes weeks to be approved or rejected, and the guidelines are never the same. Not to mention the fact it's all for fantasy. DeviantART would be a slightly better alternative for non-fantasy originals, but FAC is still better as far as exposure goes. Yeah, I'm really against Elfwood. The site design alone is reason to wish severe pain on whoever runs it. <_<

What's the point in copying it when I can just go find the original? Then you've got 10 copies of the exact same image. Big whoop.
There's not a lot of skill to it. I could sit here and xerox official pics out the wazoo all day, but I didn't really create anything. Now I can see borrowing a pose or a scene, even I do that. Even taking that pic and adding on a few cool bits of your own.
But art is about creating something, not duplicating it.
By taking something someone created and making a direct copy and claiming it as your own, are you really any better than people who just post official art and say it's theirs?
I find it a little unfortunate, I see a lot of would-be talented artists here if they just drew their own stuff.

I agree to a point. In an ideal situation, copying should be kept to private use for practice. The one and only situation I can see a use for putting it online is if the artist would like advice on how to improve their skills, but here it gets more bad reactions than gratitude. Give one minor suggestion and you not only have the artist bitching but five of their friends commenting with "She's just jealous cuz she can't draw n u can!!! this rox!!!!!! ur the best!". It drives me nuts. Those people aren't helping, no matter their good intentions. Grr!

I agree.
I can understand using copying as a learning or reference tool. That's how I learned to draw. But I also don't post that stuff for the reasons I already mentioned.

Ok! Hello people. I have never posted on this forum, and i rarely post on forums, but well, I feel like I have to post something for this. Now, I only read the 1st, 2nd and last pages of this argument, because 1. out of lazyness 2. It probably got repetitive 3. I'm only posting my opinion (i dont really have any comments on other peoples... comments... as they say "to each his own" so they are entitled to their own opinion regardless if i agree or not.) Anyway, onto my opinion--->

--->Pictures containing other artwork (usually official) such as most wallpapers
Well, this is a toughiee. Well, I believe they should give credit, and try to stick to the correct catagory... I don't know if theres a 'Wallpaper' or a 'Collage' section here...

--->CGing somebody’s lineart (with permission & credit)
Definately with permission and credit. I don't know about CGing Official artwork... to me thats a tad different. They can give credit- but they can't get permission, and to me it's not Fanart. Probably keep that to personal practices. If your learning to CG, fair enough, but don't post it. If you want people's opinions on it, make a thread in the forum for it.

--->Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)
Well, this is a divided subject for me. I believe people should be able to post mayb 1 or 2 redrawn official pictures, but I think they should specify that in the title. eg. Riku- KingdomHearts (re-drawn official art), or they should just have a thread in a forum for it. For other people's fanart, I think they should just have a forum thread.

--->Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)
Well, cosplay can be considered as art by a fan, but I don't really think it's appropriate to post it here. There are many sites that specifically cater for cosplay- you should post it there. That saves space...

---> Using other peoples fanmade characters
Hell yeah!! AS LONG AS THERE IS PERMISSION! I absolutely love it when people send me their fanart for a original character of mine. And if somebody has a cool original character of their own, I usually want to draw it. I'll ask permission, and then give credit etc.

--->Should completely original artwork be allowed here
Yes. Maybe I'm being biased as I have original artwork posted here, but I think that people should be able to post a few original artwork here. If all they post is original artwork that kinda defeats the purpose of having posted it at FAC. But i think a few originals is cool. Somebody said somehting along the lines of it shows a persons talent- it's their own ideas. I'm all for originals!

--->Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?
No. It's art, but I believe it's a waste of space. Unless the person took the pictures themselves...or they drew it themselves thats different. But it they just stick a whole heap of offical pics on a canvas, then no.

--->Photographic backgrounds?
Yes. Give credit, get permission. Is this the same kind of argument as when people get an offical picture/someone elses fanart and paste lyrics/poems over the top of it? I believe that unless it's the persons original work, it shouldnt be allowed.

--->sprite Comics?
I have absolutely no idea about what this is. So i decline to comment.

Well theres some of my opinions based on the... list of things to have opinions about. But, alas, I am not finished in my ranting. Do those... I think they're called "Dolls" their little blurry pixelated pictures. I think they're templates.. are they allowed here? Because they shouldn't be. I hate them things. They require no talent and are a waste of space.
I think a space issue popped up. Well, I believe you should limit how many pictures a person is allowed to post. Maybe 50-100 or something. If people have so many pictures they want to show the world, they should get their own website. I know people don;t have time, they don't know how to make them. etc. I didn;t know how to make a site, but I made the time- just a weekend or 2 and learnt with a quick geocities tutorial. I made everything in paint, and I made a simple site. Now I've learned a lil more, I dont use paint anymore- I use Macromedia Fireworks. If people have lots of stuff they want to post, but don't have a website I'm sure there is a few people on FAC who are willing to give a little time to whip up a simple site for people. I am willing to help anyone. ^_^

Well, anyway. I've bored people enough with my opinions. I;m sorry if i have repeated others arguments! Hope this problem all gets sorted out. Cheers!

Now that this thread has slowed down I'll post my opinions, then a summery of the thread.

These are just my opinions; the rules will likely reflect the opinions of the majority here.

Pictures containing other artwork (usually official) such as most wallpapers
I think this qualifies as fanart. I have seen many skilled pictures like this. Also from experience I know its not as easy to do as some may think. Though I saw a really crappy one posted yesterday so there are certainly not all good.

CGing somebodys line art (with permission & credit) (official? other fanart?)
With permission and credit. Written permission preferably as its better in the case of some sort of dispute.

Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)
I think this is a major part of fanart, redrawing poses and stuff. Epically well known poses that the character regularly uses.

Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)
Yes

Using other peoples fan made characters (This has caused big problems in other communities)
With permission (Again, preferable written) and credit. Character owner should also approve the picture. (As doing things with characters the original creator doesn't like causes the most problems)

Should completely original artwork be allowed here (It is rather off topic for a fanart site)
I think its completely off topic.

Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?
Is it art? Probably. Does it belong here? No

Photographic backgrounds?
Dont see a problem as long as its a minor part of the picture.

sprite Comics?
I dont have a problem with them. Though this is mostly covered by the first question.
