READ BEFORE VOTING

Rate yourself 10 to 1 (10 being the best, 1 being the poorest) on your own artistic ability. This means give yourself a rating based on YOU, not others. Are you 100% happy with your art now? Give yourself a 10. Do you think you could improve a lot? Give yourself a 6 or a 7. Do not compare your art to other's art you've seen. Compare your current work with your past art and where you plan for your skill level and creativity to be in the future. Tell us why you voted the way you did! Smile

I put 6 out of 10. =/ I draw so-so, but my lineart looks jagged and I need to work on anatomy a lot. And coloring. >_<

For some reason, I'm better at drawing American-ish cartoons more than anime-ish, even though I've only been drawing them for a week or two. =P

I think all I need to improve on is proportions. I draw things like lips and such a-semetically (spelling, wording, meaning). I can get better overall, but in proportions mostly. I give myself an eight, because I know I'll get better, But I don't think I have many obstacles left to get over.

I'm so introverted, right?

I'd give myself a 5. My art is a lot better than it used to be, but a lot of it still sucks. I need to improve on proportions when doing realistic figure drawing, and I can't do digital painting/airbrushing worth beans.

/me despises 1-10 scales, so allow me to translate it into my terms:

1/10 = 0/5
2/10 = 1/5 (dismal)
4/10 = 2/5 (below average)
6/10 = 3/5 (average)
8/10 = 4/5 (above average)
9/10 = 5/5 (outstanding)
10/10 = N/A (no one's perfect)

If I had to rate myself, I'd probably settle on a 4/5 (translation: 7-8 /10). I do pretty well when it comes to image composition and anatomy, combined with plenty of skill/experience with color blending and shading. I am not professional, but I do some interesting things and I do them well. I also like the "hand-drawn negative" technique -- it's almost my trademark by now.

But like everyone, there's still room to improve. I always have serious trouble with perspective and foreshortening aspects, and I don't do action scenes. And besides, I probably wouldn't rate myself at a 5/5 anyway, lest I appear to be gloating Wink

I think she meant rate how /satisfied/ you are with your art. It's possible to be 100% satisfied with them, even if to some other people someone's art doesn't look good. I used to be 100% happy with my art. I guess it changes back and forth. o_O

I probably read your post wrong and didn't understand the rating system thing, though. x_x

That's exactly what I was getting at. If you can only draw stick figures but you don't plan to improve any better than bubble figures, then you could give yourself a 8 or 9 if that's the way you feel. Wink

For the past few months, I hate my art. It is so sh*tty that looking at my drawings makes me shrivel in complete shame. Nothing ever turns right, it's always so bland and my poor drawings are made fun of at school....and top of that I don't get very many watches,+favs, and comments anymore on my artwork...

creativity-Great. I'd consider myself more creative then your average anime artist

shading- decent, but not good enough

color- used to be good, but now it reeks like s**t

overall- 2/10.

It's terrible. I've never been satisfied with my artwork and it looks even worse now. Considering stopping my career in art. Going to get into music instead.

I looked at your gallery, Azzy, and it's awesome. *__* I like your coloring a lot. I would much rather look at something original looking and non-typical anime-ishly done than seeing a proffesional style anime picture that looks just like any other one. But I have strange taste in anime. >_<

Your art isn't the generic enormous-eyed looking-like-it-was-traced anime drawings. You get easily get a career in art, imo. And you shouldn't let other people get you down, because they aren't the ones who made you as good of an artist as you are now(that sounded really sappy, but it's true >_>).

But I can understand that you're not very happy with your drawings. It happens to me all the time, sometimes more than once a day. o_O Then I like my art...then I don't, etc. XP

If you're not satisfied with your art, though, then you're probably not having fun with them and in that case I agree that you should stop looking for a career in it since there isn't a point in having a longtime career that you don't enjoy. Personally, I'd be way more satisfied with my art if I could draw like you.

That is very nice of you. And I agree, 'original' anime is always the best, it is always what I strive for when I draw. But, people just don't respect originality these days, it downright pisses me off. And traditional art. People on DA especially favor digital coloring over traditional paints and colored pencils, it's so depressing, and stupid. All of it just makes me want to stop drawing, even though I love drawing and it's about the only thing I could do.

I have been hating my art ever since March, and now I downright dispise it.

anyway, back to the topic. I don't want to direct attention to my nonsense rants.

Ok, then what the heck is up with this, if it's so *good* then why do the pictures get no +favs? DA may be filled with idiots, and FAC filled with fankids, but even though, wouldn't truely good art be able to muster up more favs then all the 'crappy' stuff? Seriously. I've seened some artists draw NOTHING but simple chibis but they get a whole horde of +favs. Its.....sad. But I think there is something wrong with MY stuff. Maybe it's just boring and bland. After all, you could be a talented artist, but still draw pictures that look horrifically boring.

So no, I'm not being too hard on myself. And hell, what is the point of making art if nobody wants to look at it and never comments? Isn't art all about self-expression? What is self-expression if nobody wants to look at all the pieces of s**t that you call 'art'?

But hey, thanks anyway Smile good to know there are people out there who do care a little.

EDIT: no favs, comments, watches..all the same thing. I only got a pathetic three watchers on my FAC account.....THREE. yeah, that is like so sad.

Oh and I don't compare my art to others'. After all, something could look beautiful in your eyes, but look like total trash to others. so I compare with 'stats'.

I hope so, because commenting out of pity is a disgrace. But yeah, thanks..glad you like...

Some asshole is probably going to come around say that I'm ranting nonsense to be an attention whore. Sad That is why I hate attracting attention like this.

I was thinking by this thread's title ("Rate your own artistic ability") when I made my opinion. My self-rating still stands, though: Whenever I start a drawing, I'm always worried that it won't turn outthe way my imagination sees it, so I'm uber-careful about where I lay down the lines and what details I use... and most of the time, it pays off well in the end, I look at the final drawing and think "Wow... that came out better than I thought it would!"

Still, there are times when, after a little while later, I look at the drawing in retrospect and start noticing all the faults in it. Like maybe the wrong shade of color here, not quite the right facial expression there, and so on.

Do you do rough drafts, Strata? I'm never worried about how my work will turn out. Don't get me wrong, I'm not over confident, I just don't let that stop me from doing my best. I just lay it down, hit the floor running, jump into it, pee into the wind, I don't worry about a thing, if I screw up, I go back and fix it or start over. That relaxes me enough to feel comfortable and lets me do my thing.

The only time I worry is when someone asks for a request of something I've never done.

*edit*
I do get worried, however, after I mess something up. Because sometimes I screw up so bad that I'm not sure if I can fix it. Example; I have this drawing, I think it's one of my personal best, but one part of it is seriously out of proportion, I tried fixing it three times, which caused me to erase ALOT. I think the paper I drew it on won't be able to take any more erasing in that area if I try again, it might rip. I've always wanted to post it here on FAC, but that little problem is whats stopping me. So, sorry, I do get worried.

I really don't see how you can base your artistic ability off of how many people give you favs or comment. I see proffesional artists on sites like this all the time who get 1 or 2 comments on average on their art.

:/ I give myself about 6-7.

1) I do not do shading, very rarely do I do it. It's just that I don't want to be hassled with it.

2) I think my poses are a bit "stiff" if not "weird/odd" they kind of look like their falling over half of the time, when I get finished with the picture.

3) Hands are my worst thing that I can do. Hands are my enemy. But they are getting better. Feet used to be my enemy until I just started doing a dg-sama kind of thing and then looking at the people around's feet.. (believe there have been some strange looks...) and got better at that. Hands just seem to escape me when ever possible. :/

4) Character design. I start with the basic head (which seems to be messing up for right now) and then go on to the body. i don't really have a plan in my mind (most of the time) of what this character will look like, feel, etc. I just do and I wish I took the time to settle down and think about the character before I draw.

5) When characters are kissing, I tend to just leave out the lips and don't do the whole formation thing, it looks odd when i do it.

6) eyes.. what can I say about them? Up close their good, but far away it looks like one eye is either, higher than the other, bigger than the other, wider than the other, longer than the other. I get so irrated with myself, that half of my characters are just in a wink-phase. :/

7) Hair styles, I randomly choose a hair style. Most of which are long. I hate sticking up straight spikes with a passion, even though I use them for some of my characers. I never shine if I don't have to... which mean.. never. really. :/

8 ) Coloring is not my strong point, but putting colors together is. Smile

I went for seven. On the plus, I'm good at handling paint, I use colour nicely and I have my own style. The other side is that I don't do figures very well and that I tend to get a bit fixated on one thing and produce loads of pieces that are practically identical. I also don't have imagination or the experience to produce beautiful pieces off the cuff, except in freakish circumstances which I can never seem to replicate.

So I like a lot of my work, but there's room for improvement.

You bet I do -- example:
http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-115350.html

I'm just super meticulous about getting something to look just right before I start shading it and all.

I give myself a 5. Maybe because I'm extremely frustrated at my work these days (to the point of making me want to pull my hair out)...but mostly because I have very high standards for myself. If anyone here has seen Alex Ross' work, then you'll know what my artistic goal is. If I can get up to the point of being able to work photorealistically, then I feel that I can fully express myself, and not only in photorealism, but in other styles as well.
