I give myself 8 out of 10. I mean people like my coloring, but my drawing could use more work, but hey, i'm an adolescent, I'm still learning, and stoopid kidddies out there are accusing me of it, people these days, oh well. _________________ Wyat Fucking Earp! |

I disagree, I see much more potential in your work. Raw talent. I bet you will be getting much better than you think. I don't mean the mistakes or anything like that, sort of like a path, I don't know if that makes sense, but you'll end up better, that's all I mean. I'd give you something like a 6. And then i'd steal your avatar! _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

6/10
I'm better than some, but my attention to lighting is always less than it should be. I also have the tendency to ignore the importance of backgrounds. My work with faces has improved, but I should go back to the sketchbook for a while to work out full body poses. I have developed my own technique for painting, but not really my own style. Lately I've become too engrossed in the ease and cleanliness of photoshop and stopped practicing with my true mediums. My pencil shading is rarely clean, and I depend too much on the showiness of color. As for subject matter, I have a few pieces I really enjoy, but most still center around portraits too much. There isn't enough movement to make the picture a real work of art. One of the only guys, I think ever to pull of portraits getting major recognition was Jacques-Louis David. Then again... there is a reason I'm not majoring in art. |

The Mona Lisa's a portrait. And a good portion of the Old Masters' work. Not saying they're good, but they're certainly well recognized.
8/10. Not so much because of what I can't do, but what I don't do. My attention span wanders too often for much to be finished. I have stacks and stacks of things that are in various stages of completion, great ideas that I loved at the time and still love, but I have no desire to keep working on them. And most of the problem is that I can see the image in my head and am satisfied with that. Don't need it on paper/illustration board/canvas.
Horrible habit that I'll be breaking in the next four years (money always helps). I should work on the fantasy genre and stylization more. Depends on what particular kind of illustration I go for, though, and I've got four years to work that all out.
In the meantime, I'm mostly satisfied with my abilities. Getting better at Photoshop but have a lot of work to do with that. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Ah, very true =) Then again, David and da Vinci both pay better attention to lighting than I do |

Meh. I don't particularly like fantasy. Even if I did draw it, I probably wouldn't post it. But part of the job description is being able to draw anything on command. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

well there's enough people who like fantasy, at least give it a few trys, but it's what ya wanna do, I want to try relistic, I'm not good at it, but I'm not bad at it either. I have a sketch of lindsay lohan (yes, I am such a disgrace drawing her, I was bored) but yeah, I just might try more realistic pictures. Heres a sketch of her where she's suprised or scared to see us today

Same here, actually ... most interpretations of 'fantasy' just don't mean anything to me. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Ive always been ultimately critical of anything that Ive done. be it in industry, family matters, and of course my art. I rate myself a level of four, not on my abilities -vs- others, but on what I want to see from myself. I was schooled in art, and from an extreemly artistic family (even my sons achivements at a young age in his craft of singing at state level compitition at the age of 14). I went through college over 20 years ago and have only doodled my characters for years at times. sometimes I didnt pick up a pen for years. I was an A student, but dosent mean squat when you dont use your tallent for spans at a time. I think when I sat down in 2002 to draw my characters again to what Im doing now (Ive always been good at anatomy and dreaming up difficult poses to draw anatomy in) Ive brought myself back to what I consider low C level. most people I see doing art that consider themselves at thier peak....need to be more critical of themselves, mayby not to the point of beating themselves into the ground, but there is always room for improvement. myself in college I would have rated myself with a seven then...now just a four. just because I should have been 1000% better in the 20+ years Ive let myself go.
I like to put a nasty ball point pen in my hand at times, so that my corrective skills dont interfear with my abilities of correct proportions. I think when I do that it puts so much pressure on myself to do it right or Ill just crash and burn.
examples: Lisa Raye (ballpoint sketch)
Angel: Claudia "CC" Christian (corrective inking on MSPaint)
I like the look of my inkings, and have been praised for content, anatomy, and cleanliness by proffesionals, but I am never satisfied, especially with shading. I also see other artists 20+ years younger with the abilities I had in the past and seriously kick myself for not pushing myself in all that time. in a year or two from now I may be where I wanted to be with my art in 1985. Right now I'd give myself an 8/10. I'm pretty happy with where I am right now. The main problem I have, though, is that I am a lazy bum when it comes to drawing. I wish I could put a lot of nice detail into my work, but I get impatient, and my style is just naturally scribbly and quick. I also have a major problem actually finishing pictures--as soon as the inspiration dies (and for whatever reason, it dies pretty quickly), that's it. I'll have a great idea, I'll sketch it out... and I'll never touch it again. Fallenangel put it so nicely:
And most of the problem is that I can see the image in my head and am satisfied with that. Don't need it on paper/illustration board/canvas.
All that aside, there is always room for improvement. Every picture I do shows me new ways to work, new techniques to try, shortcuts, ways to work quicker, etc. I learn with every picture I do, even if it's just a five minute sketch. I've been trying to get myself in the habit of doing several preliminary sketches for a picture idea, so I can get a feel for the different angles and compositions, and I can learn what to do/what not to do in the final piece from the sketch. (Or course, I also run the risk of getting bored sooner. Ah well.) I am also working to improve the way I draw realistic faces, so they don't look so out-of-whack and toon-ish.
One final word to say: For the most part, I do art for art's sake. I post here so my friends can see my work, especially my digital stuff (because I can't get it to school and show them) and for the whole "community of artists" thing. Comments are, yes, a nice thing to recieve, but I certainly don't expect them. And honestly, the novelty of getting comments has long worn off (most of them are just "oh wow, so cool, great skills--that sort of thing--anyway). _________________ 222.

7/10 Because I can draw portraits very well but I need to work on full-length body pictures. Also I wish I could draw from my imagination with more details. _________________ |

Gave myself a 4. I'm not very happy with the way I draw/color.. or the way I present it. I rarely use backgrounds and such... and I always leave tons of mistakes that I just get too lazy to fix. I'm trying some new things now.. trying to get back into drawing... I havn't been for a long time. So I'm not going to be expecting anything great from myself over the next while. _________________ |

I gave myself an 8. yeah, I'm probably overestimating my abilities, but I went to my gallery & compared my oldest pic with my most recent, & I've definitely improved a lot.^^ I like my shading & backgrounds most of the time, but I still need work on my anatomy. even with all my practice, there are still several features on the body I can't get quite right. I could also add more detail to my character designs. you can never go wrong with detail! |
